Dwayne Adway- Buried Treasure
Q) What are the current projects you are working on?
A) I am working on a show called “Close to Home,” which is a new Jerry Bruckheimer series for CBS. I play the love interest of Kimberly Elise. I also did a video game called “Bullet Proof,” which is a 50 Cent video game coming out in conjunction with his movie Get Rich or Die Tryin’ in a couple months.
Q) Tell us about the premise of Into The Blue and your role as Ray.
A) It comes out September 30th and it is a film that I did a year ago with Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Ashley Scott, Josh Brolin, Scott Caan and a bunch of great people. The premise of the movie is about a group of divers who go out looking for lost treasure in the bottom of the Bahamian ocean. They end up coming across some illegal cargo and basically; they are debating about what to do with it. Is it something they can get to finance the equipment they need to find the treasure or do they take the cargo (which is their battle)? My character, Roy, is a Defense Force Captain, which is kind of like Coast Guard Captain. He patrols the waters of the Bahamian ocean. His duties are to patrol the waters to look for sunken ships and planes that may be carrying illegal cargo into the Bahamas. My character also is friends with Paul and Jessica’s characters and he is morally conflicted because he has the opportunity to actually make some illegal cash pertaining to the illegal cargo or actually try to help Paul and Jessica get out of a tough spot with the local drug lord who the cargo belongs to. Roy has to decide which side he should stay on, as far as his loyalty to his friends or try and jump on the other side and try and make some extra cash illegally.
Q) What made you want to be a part of this project?
A) I was given the opportunity to go to the Bahamas in the wintertime, an island out on the water, with Ashley Scott and Jessica Alba in a bikini. Who would not want to take that job? I’d be a complete idiot! I did like the script, (I thought it was a great script), it read well and I had seen John Stockwell’s film Blue Crush and I liked a lot of the visual stuff that he had done. It just was a great opportunity to be in business with MGM again after having done Soul Plane.
Q) What was it like working with such a talented cast?
A) It was cool! We had no choice, but to bond because we were out on the water shooting for hours and hours. It was so cool because many times we were out on the boat and, of course, we didn’t have our own personal trailers so we ended up down beneath in one room kind of bonding, talking and getting to know each other. I thought that brought a lot of chemistry to the film that was needed for all of the characters. We had a great time. It was a real big party down there!
Q) Do you have a most memorable moment from filming Into the Blue?
A) I would have to say that on one of my first days I was there I was thrown into a scene where I was actually coming upon the boat that Paul Walker and Scott Caan had. They had Ashley out sunbathing topless. So, one of my first days on the set was actually having to be in the scene with Ashley Scott, seeing her topless out on the Bahamian water. That was a pretty interesting day! I had to make sure that John had gotten everything he needed or was there something that we needed to shoot! I had to walk around like I was not interested. I had to really picture her as some unattractive girl because my character is married.
Q) You’ve worked with such big names as Katie Holmes, Michael Keaton, Snoop Dogg, etc. Who would you most like to work with in the future?
A) I would like to work with Morgan Freeman, I’m such a wonderful fan of his work. I would love to do a film with Hilary Swank, something like a gritty Sevenish kind of movie. As for directors, I’d like to work with is the Scott brothers, Tony Scott and his brother. I’d like to work with Ed Zwick. I like him as a director and I’d really like to work with Quentin Tarantino. I think he is one of the coolest directors of our ages.
Q) What do you do to prepare for your roles?
A) I try and do as much research as I can, as far as reading. For instance, withInto the Blue, I had an opportunity to talk to some of the Bahamian Defense Force guys because they were extras in the movie. I was able to learn basically the dialogue and terminology they use for the official list of duties as to what actual captain does, what does an actual Defense Force man do and their responsibilities. I was able to pick their brains about that to learn what a vessel is, what are their daily duties and what kind of things would they look for out on the water. I try and get into an environment as much as I can, based on the profession of the character whether he is a cop, a secret service agent, a model or some guy who has been broken hearted by a girl. I try to talk to as many people as I can and get as much information as I can get about the character or what they would be going through. I try and match it up with personal things that I have gone through to try and mix and match it and come up with something special.
Q) You’ll play the voice of 50 Cent’s nemesis in his anticipated interactive game. How did you hear about the role and are you a fan of 50 Cent’s music?
A) I am a fan hip-hop and I had the opportunity to do voice over work for years. When this opportunity came up I thought it would be different. I always try to keep it interesting and an opportunity came up for me to do that project. I really had to go to the streets with it because a lot of the language on the video game is definitely different language I used in First DaughterorInto the Blue. I had to go East Side Detroit on that particular character.
Q) You were voted Ebony’s Most Eligible Bachelor in June 2005. How does that make you feel?
A) It made me feel very eligible! The interesting thing is, I had no idea that there were so many single women looking for a good man out there! I guess, living in LA, I run across a lot of shallow women. I had an opportunity to read some of the letters and responses to that particular article. They were very personal and I realized that there are a lot of eclectic interesting women out there.
Q) What has been your favorite role?
A) My favorite role has been Into the Blue. I really enjoyed working with Paul, Jessica, Ashley and Scott. It was a different kind of character for me. A lot of the other characters I’ve played before are athletic and I think now I am beginning to be able to play characters that have a lot more substance. I just try and fight the stereotype of always being an athletic guy. After I played Dennis Rodman in a movie about his life, I think Hollywood had a take on me as pretty much being an athletic guy who would take whatever role comes up. I am very fortunate to be able to break that stereotype having done films like Soul Plane and being a hot model, going on to do First Daughter and being a secret service agent and then on to doing Into the Blue where I play a Defense Force Captain. I am able to get a grasp on some roles that probably wouldn’t have been available to me three or four years ago. I am just kind of turning that corner now.
Q) You are a regular participant at Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids Foundation and LA Homeless Mission events. Why is this important to you?
A) When it comes to kids, they are close to my heart because I have kids. When it comes to something like the Aids crisis that is going on in America, of course the innocence of a child has no responsibility when it comes to that. It’s something that is passed on to them based upon maybe the irresponsibility or the affliction that comes from the adult that brings these children into the world. It’s as if an innocent life has no take on exactly what kind of health situation they are going to have for the rest of their life, maybe from the irresponsibility of a parent or something like that, taking drugs or whatever. To me, that’s really close to my heart because I just feel like if I’m going to spend my time on something I want it to be directly toward something like Elizabeth Glazer who reaches out to kids and tries to assist them in so many various ways because they don’t have control over it. I think the innocence of a child really deserves, or any child, to be able to live a very fruitful life and to be able to live a life with longevity. I donate my time to that particular cause is very meaningful to me because of the innocence of children and being a parent.
Q) What do you do in your spare time?
A) I like to read, write poetry, I am a big poetry writer. I like wine tasting and I’m kind of getting into this golf thing. I also like shopping, shopping and more shopping. I love to shop and I’ve had this disease since I was a child. I need some help with it! I think that I am going to actually seek therapy because I have a shopping disease, especially when it comes to hats. I have this BIG collection of hats. I have hats from like back when I was in the 9th grade! If I see someone with a hat, I have no problem asking them if I can have that hat or what I need to do to get that hat. I like to travel too and I had the opportunity to got to the Dominican Republic and to Cuba when I was working in the Bahamas. I just had the opportunity to see how they live in the third world countries, it made me appreciate being an American and what we are able to be privileged to have. It was great! I plan to travel and see more of the world.
Q) What would you like to say to all of your fans and supporters?
A) I am very appreciative of the support and I am glad that I do have a following out there; it humbles me. I will continue to try and do the best work I can and bring characters that you can appreciate in the future.
