Interviews
Elizabeth Faith Ludlow – Another Life
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I have recently taken a more “behind the scenes” approach to my work and am producing a pilot that I will be directing a few episodes on when it moves forward. You can also catch me in an upcoming episode of “NCIS: New Orleans.”
Q) Please tell us the premise for the series “Another Life.”
A) “Another Life” is about a crew of astronauts who go on a high-risk mission to figure out the origin of an alien artifact that has landed on Earth.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) I was very drawn to my character Cas and what she represents amongst the crew. Portraying strong women of color is very important to me and Cas is just that. The opportunity to bring her to life was an honor for me.
Q) How was your character Cas Isakovic originally described to you?
A) Cas was originally described to me as a very intelligent young woman who went down the wrong path after losing her family. I knew that she was going to be Niko’s protege and that she had immense potential, yet was struggling to access it.
Q) Was there anything you added to the role that wasn’t in the initial breakdown?
A) The initial breakdown was pretty brief so I was able to really create the character from scratch. I had been given a short description of who she was, but as the scripts came in and we got closer to filming, I brought in my own personal subtleties and nuances that I felt she needed to be a real person that an audience could connect with.
Q) Were you familiar with any of your costars before meeting on the show?
A) Yes! I was familiar with Selma [Blair], Katee [Sackhoff] and Justin [Chatwin] before the show.
Q) Was there someone(s) in particular you were hoping to share a scene with?
A) I would have loved to have done a scene with Selma; I have been a huge fan of hers since I was young.
Q) What were some of your favorite moments or most memorable moments from filming “Another Life?”
A) Some of my favorite moments from filming included spending time with Selma and the rest of my cast. I was blessed to work with such a genuine and lovely group of human beings and I enjoyed every moment of getting to know them and being able to create with them. I also really enjoyed being in the astronaut suit, despite how uncomfortable it was. Being one of those things you fantasize about as a kid, it was a big moment for me!
Q) What do you think it is about Netflix that makes it the perfect home for this show?
A) Netflix is the perfect home for “Another Life” because of its accessibility. The cast is so diverse and there’s a lot of people both domestically and internationally that will be able to connect with the show and its characters.
Q) What is it about “Another Life” that you think will make it a fast fan favorite sci-fi series?
A) The cast of “Another Life” will make it a fan favorite. We have a lot to offer in terms of diversity—in both race and sexual orientation. In addition, the show incorporates some of the best elements of a sci-fi genre.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the instant fan feedback you’ll receive to the show?
A) I find it fascinating to hear others perspectives of projects that I am a part of, regardless of their opinion. There’s always something to learn from your audience.
Q) What did you personally take away from your time working on this show?
A) My take away from working on “Another Life” would be that both perseverance and camaraderie have become necessary qualities in both life and any working experience.
Q) Viewers loved to hate you on “The Walking Dead.” Was Arat truly doing Negan’s work for her own safety or because she believed in his leadership?
A) People definitely loved to hate me on “The Walking Dead!” Arat was doing what she had to do to survive as a woman in a post-apocalyptic world that was run predominately by men. I don’t know that her allegiance to Negan was an option.
Q) Talk about working alongside the incredible cast, especially Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
A) Working with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and the rest of the cast was an awesome experience. My take away from it was the incredible companionship built between the cast and the dedication to a show that wasn’t always the easiest to work on. Every single person I worked with was both enthusiastic and devoted.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the work you do?
A) Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support! I love hearing from all of you!
