Interviews
Emily Vu – Weekend
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would say my sound definitely leans urban-pop.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I’ve been inspired by Blackbear, Lauv, and LANY.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Weekend.”
A) “Weekend” is about this person I was talking to and I started to have really heavy feelings for them. I swear I even thought I was in love, but little did I know they weren’t looking for anything serious and they ended up ghosting me.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I feel like a lot of fans connect to “Weekend” because of the story the lyrics tell. I believe that being ghosted or “played” is such a common thing in this generation’s dating world. I think everyone, everywhere can relate to that feeling in some way.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The music video portrays a visual of the “relationship” I was in and showing the two different perspectives. In the end, one person cared more about the relationship than the other person.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My songwriting process differs based on who I’m working with. When I work by myself, I tend to sit on a piano grinding out really cool chords I hear, humming melodies, and singing the first thing that comes to mind.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m usually always giving input or different ideas during the production stage of a song. I’m in the same room as the producer, sitting right next to them, watching everything they add or take out.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes, there will definitely be an EP or album in the near future!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would love to collaborate with blackbear one day.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to a lot of PRETTYMUCH lately. I love the energy they put into every song. Their songs are just so catchy and relatable.
Q) We love watching you on TikTok! What inspires your performances?
A) My audience inspires my performances and videos on TikTok!
Q) During the quarantine more people are becoming active on TikTok. Do you have any advice for new users?
A) For new TikTok users, don’t be afraid to be yourself and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s important to connect with my fans as I would not be where I am without them. I do this for them. There’s nothing more important than keeping in contact with the people who support me.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would like to say that I appreciate all the love I’ve received on this journey. There are so many exciting things happening and I can’t wait to share it all with you guys.
