Erin Gibney – not something i’ve told my friends
By: Mariah Thomas
Q) How would you describe the sound of your newer music?
A) I would describe the sound of my newer music as sad girl country with a pop twist. I have had so much fun exploring these new themes in my latest releases and feel like this music is a true representation of who I want to be as an artist.
Q) “not something i’ve told my friends” details getting back with an ex and knowing your friends would disapprove. What were their reactions to this song?
A) This was definitely a really honest song for me and was one that I was nervous to show my friends. I knew they were disappointed when I started communication with my ex again and I talked really candidly about it in these lyrics. They were so receptive to the song and were proud of my openness in writing about the experience.
Q) What was the songwriting process like for this specific single?
A) I wrote the idea of this song late at night sitting in my bedroom. I wrote pieces of the chorus while in the midst of this situation so it came together really quickly and easily. When I brought the song to Landon Austin a few weeks later, it immediately came together and I walked away knowing we had created something great.
Q) What advice do you have for anyone in a similar experience?
A) I think the advice I would give to someone is to give themselves grace. It can be really hard breaking ties with someone you care so deeply about. In the end, though, it’s important to respect yourself enough to walk away from a situation you know is wrong for you.
Q) What were some go-to songs or artists that helped you through that break up?
A) I swore by Kelsea Ballerini’s Rolling Up the Welcome Mat EP during my breakup. I felt like it perfectly described everything I was feeling. “Mountain With A View” was my #1 streamed song of the year during the first year of my breakup.
Q) On your Instagram, you are constantly sharing curated playlists. What are some songs you would put on one with “not something I’ve told my friends?”
A) Great question! I would put “Last Kiss” by Taylor Swift, “logical” by Olivia Rodrigo and “No Caller ID” by Megan Moroney!
Q) Are there ever nerves surrounding releasing music that is inspired by your personal experiences?
A) Definitely. When a song details a personal or painful experience for me, it always feels really vulnerable releasing it to the world. I always feel affected by the response to it because the story is so close to my heart.
Q) In your release week vlog, you show being on a billboard for the first time. What was that moment like?
A) That was truly one of the most surreal moments of my life! I have passed the Nashville Sign billboard a million times since moving to Nashville, so getting to see my name on it was a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.
Q) Of all of your releases, is there a song you feel most proud of writing?
A) I felt really proud of writing “by june.” I connected with this song like no other because its lyrics are what I told myself every day to get over my breakup. It was my own personal guide to healing, and it is still the release I am the most proud of.
Q) What does 2025 hold for your music? Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I am so excited for the releases I have coming in 2025. I can’t say too much yet, but there is a lot of music being released from me this year!
Q) Who is an artist you would love to collaborate with in the future?
A) I would love to collaborate with Kelsea Ballerini. Since the start of my career, she has been an inspiration to me. Working with her would be a dream come true!
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of your music?
A) I would like to say thank you, thank you, thank you! Your support is everything to me and I am so grateful for every message, stream and every show you’ve attended. You are the reason I do this!
