Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would say that “Fire” can be described as hip pop as it’s a blend of pop and R&B, which really offers a new dynamic between the two genres. The song brings a variety of soulful vocals, sultry melodies and intricate pop/R&B production. The song is jam-packed with passion and intensity with a mix of smooth R&B beats and emotive lyrics that create a beautiful listening experience. The catchy chant and chorus really elevate the song to a fun feeling experience. The dynamic vocal delivery in “Fire” really showcases a lighter and more approachable twist to me as an artist, which my fans seem to be enjoying. This stylistic musical sound of “Fire” is bold, sophisticated and undeniably soul stirring, making it a standout track in the contemporary R&B landscape.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) As a musician, my musical influences range across various genres and time periods – shaping my unique style and sound. Some of my key influences include Lauryn Hill; her powerful voice, soulful delivery, and fearless attitude towards social issues, have influenced my approach to singing and songwriting and really helped me gain authenticity and meaning as an artist. Most recently I would say Anne Marie is my go-to (not only) for her unique sound and amazing talent but also for her unapologetic approach when it comes to addressing the negative impact the pressure of being perfect is having on youngsters. She is a great role model to all and a massive inspiration me when it comes to breaking boundaries both inside and outside of the musical forum. Learning from these iconic women has helped me to develop a rich and dynamic musical style that reflects my diverse life experiences without being fearful of what others may think, which is really liberating!

Q) “Fire” is such a summer banger. Talk about create the single.

A) “Fire” was originally created at a songwriting camp in Scotland. It was the final day of writing and me and my co-writers Jemma Tweedie and Niko Westelink wrote “Fire” and it was lit from the beginning to the end of the session. We knew we had created something very magical as soon as we began. The idea came from having enough of someone/people who continually push your own personal boundaries and make the mistake of taking kindness for weakness and push you too far. It is about realising your limits and taking back your power by ridding yourself of them and all their influences they have had over you for too long! “Fire” represents the end of it – whatever your “it” might be – by the end of the song it’s done! The song was then taken to amazing producers Helen Boulding and Jonas Persson, where they created the record. At this point we recognised that “Fire” could still be elevated even more. We knew we wanted a rapper and that’s when we found featured artist Onika J, who brought the extra heat from the rap to “Fire.”

Q) How did you come to connect with Onika J for a feature on the track?

A) It was through a combination of networking, mutual respect for each other’s work and a shared vision for the project. Our collaboration began when we were introduced by a mutual acquaintance in the music industry who recognized that our individual styles and talents would complement each other well. After an initial meeting to discuss our creative visions and goals for the project, it became evident that our musical sensibilities aligned and that we shared a passion for producing high-quality music that resonated with both of our audiences.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) That’s such a great question but also a tricky one to answer, as for me different fans connect to the song on multiple levels, primarily due to the emotional resonance it carries with their own life experiences. However, I would say the prominent theme I relate to and I’m proud to have created is the bold representation of female empowerment which is threaded throughout the video. That combined with the slick videography, fantastic set, costumes, styling, dancers and not to mention the infectious energy the song brought to the set – you’ve got yourself a video that is hard to turn off!

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) The video encapsulates the raw emotions of feeling trapped and suffocated by negativity, only to find the strength to break free and emerge stronger than ever, which is why I’m caught in a trap in the opening scene but not for long!

The high energy imagery throughout the video represents the intense emotions felt during the song which is all about female empowerment, liberation and self-discovery. The imagery of fire symbolizes both destruction and renewal, capturing the essence of burning away toxicity to make way for growth and empowerment. The tension within the track mirrors the internal struggle and eventual release that is felt when breaking free from toxic influences and emerging stronger on the other side.

The video is designed to inspire anyone who has also experienced this transformative journey, and the song serves as a reminder of the inner strength we all possess to overcome obstacles and rise above adversity.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Every songwriter’s process is unique, but in general mine starts with a melody and a strong emotion which then leads me straight to the lyrics. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. All the songs I write about are based on either my life experiences or those of people who are closest to me. Collectively, we have a few and it’s safe to say it tends open up a whole range of human emotions, from love to hate to anger! I would say my inspiration comes from the emotion I’m feeling (generally at a very silly time in the morning) where I’ll record the lyrics and melody onto my phone, then from there I take it into the studio to finish the song and the music with a producer. More recently I found that collaborating with other musicians and songwriters can play a significant role in shaping the final song or taking an existing song to exciting new heights as everyone brings something special to the table. The most important aspect of the songwriting process is to be open to experimentation, inspiration and to create something relatable to your audience.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I work closely with my producers to bring my vision to life, making decisions on arrangements, sound choices and other the overall direction of the music. Ultimately, my involvement in the production of my music is integral to creating a cohesive and authentic representation of me as an artist and my musical expression.

Q) With “Fire” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) All I can say for now is watch this space.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Esmae performance?

A) I would like to say that my fans can expect me to create a unique atmosphere that resonates with the audience not only while performing but by getting up close and personal with me too! Many are yet to see the fun-loving girl I am and how much I really love being connected to people through my music, especially those who take time out of their crazy schedules to come and see me perform. So, I would say expect a heartfelt and genuine performance, where we have a night to create some good times and maybe even some LOL’s together we can all add into our memory bank.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) As a songwriter, collaborating with a diverse range of artists can bring fresh perspectives and creative dynamics to the music-making process. For me it would be Anne Marie as she’s so amazing and relevant to me as an artist. Collaborating with her would be a dream come true,

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I love listening to all types of artists but right now I’m absolutely loving Little Simz and Yebba! Both Little Simz and Yebba are captivating artists that have been making waves in the music industry with their unique talent. Little Simz, with her introspective lyrics and raw delivery, brings a refreshing authenticity to her music. She seamlessly blends genres like hip-hop, grime, and R&B to create a sound that is uniquely her own.

Yebba, on the other hand, is known for her soulful vocals and emotional depth in her songwriting. Her ability to convey raw emotion through her music is truly captivating, drawing listeners in with her powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics.

What sets these two artists apart is not only their incredible talent but also their willingness to push boundaries and defy genres. Little Simz and Yebba both bring a fresh perspective to the music scene, challenging the status quo and paving the way for a new generation of artists.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) I would like to thank you all for your unbelievable support – it means the world to me. Your faith in me motivates me to strive to continue producing content that resonates with you on a deeper level. I am truly grateful for everyone who has chosen to follow my journey and be a part of this incredible movement we’re building. Your support is what drives me to keep pursuing my passion and work tirelessly to deliver work that lives up to your expectations. Thank you for believing in me and standing by me.
