Fear The Walking Dead – Captive
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
Last week, Alicia finally met Jack while our group was subjected to a new threat in the water: more people. What happened this week? Let’s find out!
“Jack, he had this sense about you.”
As Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) sits quietly at a table on the boat, Connor (Mark Kelly) is seen cooking a steak in the kitchen while Vida (Veronica Diaz-Carranza) looks on. Connor brings food over to Alicia, offering her a hot meal and explaining a little bit about how he runs his ship. Alicia wants to know where Travis (Cliff Curtis) was taken, but during their conversation the power goes out and Connor leaves to attend to the problem. As Alicia starts to eat her steak, Vida comes over and steals her food, eating it in front of her as she walks out to join Connor.
Alicia, left alone in the ship, proceeds to try and find an exit. What she discovers before Jack (Daniel Zovatto) finds her is that the boat is docked on dry land and there is no possibility of escape. Jack persuades Alicia to trust him rather than try to run.
“Who says you’re going home?”
Meanwhile on The Abigail, Daniel (Ruben Blades) and Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie) are with Reed (Jesse McCartney). Daniel tends to Reed’s injury, where he was stabbed when the group reclaimed the boat. Reed explains to Daniel that everyone on the boat is in trouble, especially when Reed does not return to his older brother, Connor, with the boat. Reed tries to be intimidating, but as Daniel and Chris leave him alone, Daniel confides to Chris that Reed is just scared and will say anything to try and scare him. Chris volunteers to watch Reed while Daniel goes upstairs.
“Everything is a negotiation.”
Up at the helm, Madison (Kim Dickens) and Luis (Arturo del Puerto) are having a heated argument about saving Alicia and Travis versus continuing to Mexico. Strand (Colman Domingo) lays under covers, recovering from almost being stranded in the water. Luis is upset that there will be more people going with them to Mexico, as there is only enough money to get him and Strand into the country. Strand believes that all of them can go, but knows that Madison needs to get everyone back before they can continue further.
Luis leaves the room and Madison and Strand talk about Nick (Frank Dillane) going on the mission for Strand. While Madison is mad about Nick putting his life in danger, Strand feels that giving Nick these missions helps keep him off the drugs and focusing on something else. Madison is still not sure, but Strand reminds her that her children are not children anymore after their experiences.
“I offered him your Abigail.”
As Alicia tries to convince Jack to help her get back to her family, Travis is locked up below deck. Soon enough, he is joined by Alex (Michelle Ang), the woman who was in the raft that Strand cut free from the boat. Travis quickly discovers that Alex blames Travis and Strand for her plight and eventually having to kill Jake (Brendan Meyer). So when captured by Connor, Alex gave him The Abigail as her bargaining chip to live.
Travis does explain how he feels responsible for what had happened, but that he has had to do things just like Alex. He is referring to when he had to kill his ex-wife before she turned and how his son Chris had to be witness to that violence. Alex now has a better understanding, but is still determined to be part of Connor’s crew and survive.
“Where’s my family?”
Since she had promised to help pull her weight and work for Connor, Alicia sits with Jack at the radar, trying to learn the ropes on how Connor determines which boats to go after. During this time, Alicia takes notice that The Abigail is coming towards them, but she believes they were safe in the water where they were. Alicia now becomes determined to get back to her family, even seeking out another boat to capture with the help of Jack.
With a plan in motion, Jack brings Alicia down to see Travis. Alicia explains to Travis that there’s hope for them to make an escape and get back to the boat. But their reunion proves to be a little bittersweet after Travis encourages Alicia to leave without him and get back to their family.
“Time to knock on the front door.”
As the group approaches where Alicia and Travis are being kept, Madison reaches out to Connor, offering a trade of her family for his brother. Connor also finds out that the rest of the group was dispatched and reluctantly agrees, if it means he can have his brother back. Unfortunately, the plan hits a snag when the group hears a gunshot come from below deck.
Chris, who was watching Reed and had been taunted by him throughout the day, shot Reed dead. Chris claims that he knew Reed would turn, due to his extensive injuries, and made the decision to take him out when he could. As he explains this to Madison, he worries that this has ruined any possibility of getting his father and Alicia back. But Madison is prepared to make it work.
“It’s what we do now.”
Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) and Nick are cleaning up the room where Reed was shot. During that time, Reed reanimates. But before he can be killed again, Daniel steps in and using the weapon that initially injured Reed, pins him to the wall. With Reed in a reanimated state, Daniel sees the possibility that the original plan may still work.
Madison takes the reanimated Reed with her to meet with Connor, using a hood to cover up Reed’s death. As they’re on their way, Connor brings Travis upstairs to make the trade, but Alicia is nowhere to be seen. She managed to get away from Jack and the rest of the group, only to be cornered by Vida in the lockup below deck. Vida, upset by Alicia being so willing to break Jack’s heart, is prepared to fight. But Alicia gets the upper hand by locking Vida in the cell and finding herself back on deck where she was earlier in the episode. This time, though, she sees her family.
“I’m sorry.”
Madison meets with Connor to make the trade for their respective family members. As Travis is returned, Connor pulls off the hood and discovers that Reed has died and reanimated. Reed bites Connor while Madison and Travis fight Connor’s other henchmen. Madison and Travis win the fight and manage to get into the raft to get back to The Abigail.
Alicia sees her family from the boat, but is stopped by Jack before she can go to them. He doesn’t understand why she wants to be with her family after how they stranded Alex in the raft. Jack tries to make Alicia choose, playing on Alicia’s feelings towards him. In the end, Alicia apologizes to Jack and manages to slide down the side of the boat and jumps into the water. Once she gets on the boat with Madison and Travis, she looks back up at Jack, who stands alone on the ship, sad and alone.
