Fear The Walking Dead – Monster
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
With “The Walking Dead” on break until October, “Fear The Walking Dead” picks up right where they left off at the end of Season One – trying to find a way to escape the chaos in Los Angeles by going with Strand (Colman Domingo) on his boat, The Abigail.
“We need to go back.”
Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis) and Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie) are waiting on the beach at Strand’s compound for Strand, Nick (Frank Dillane), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Cary), Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) and Daniel (Ruben Blades) to reach The Abigail. They are to start up the boat and come rescue them. Once they do, Nick goes back to the beach to rescue them, but not before they are dealing with all the reanimated corpses that have now invaded the compound and having cornered Madison, Travis and Chris.
Luckily, Nick gets there in time to save them, as well as the corpse of Liza (Elizabeth Rodriguez) – Chris’s mother and Travis’s ex-wife. Chris refuses to leave her body on shore, as only hours ago she had been bitten and then shot in the head by Travis as per her request. Before they can leave, a corpse comes out of nowhere and Nick kills it by using the motor to destroy its head. As they finally make their way to The Abigail, Madison, Travis, Chris and Nick witness Los Angeles burning to the ground.
“How far can it take us?”
Once the group is together safe and sound, they try to determine where to go. With Los Angeles no longer an option, they want to get far away. Strand assures them that they are safe on the boat. As a life raft with survivors comes up alongside the boat, Madison goes to ask Strand about taking on additional survivors, but is refused. He has determined the group will go to San Diego and that no one else is allowed on his boat.
Alicia, who is upset by this, goes to find out if there are other survivors by getting on the CB radio and checking the frequencies. As she keeps turning on different stations, she hears a young man’s voice come through, trying to find other people out there. Alicia, at first reluctant to say anything over the radio, finally gives in and responds to the man by replying with two simple words: I’m here.
“The whole world is ‘I don’t know’ right now.”
Madison and Travis are unsure of how to proceed with Liza’s death and the way Chris has been grieving. They both know that they did the right thing, but trying to deal with the situation has them perplexed.
Chris has stayed by his mother’s corpse this whole time, unwilling to let her go. Eventually, he goes out onto the deck, where Daniel is fishing for dinner. Chris joins him and they both share a moment over the loss of their loved ones, as Daniel had lost his wife Griselda (Patricia Reyes Spindola) due to the outbreak. Both of them find peace in this moment as Daniel catches something and reels it in. The group will eat tonight.
“If this is the end of the world, it is already over.”
Madison, after trying to locate Strand on the boat, finds him not navigating it (it is on autopilot), but instead on the top deck drinking. Madison asks Strand how far out they are in the water, since they want to put Liza’s body as far out to sea as possible.
As Madison speaks with Strand, she notices that he is quite eccentric. He speaks to himself and is adamant about the course they’re taking as the right one. Later, Madison finds Daniel and shares her reservations about Strand. Daniel, who appears almost nonchalant and calm with just fishing and observing the water, confides in Madison that he already has a close eye on Strand.
Later on, a small farewell is held for Liza. Travis reminisces all the wonderful qualities that she possessed, while Chris looks at his father. When Travis mentions that their best accomplishment was their son, Chris seems to be angered by his father’s words. In an abrupt manner, Chris walks over and pushes Liza’s body into the water, then storms off.
“If it wasn’t for me, you’d all be burned. You’re welcome.”
Travis follows Chris back into the cabin. Infuriated, Chris hits his father as he is angry that he killed his mother. Because of this, Chris feels Travis had no right to say anything about her. Travis killed Liza and that’s that.
Meanwhile, Alicia has been talking with the man over the CB radio, whose name is Jack. They spend their time talking about the outbreak and what they have seen and lost. Alicia finds out through one of their conversations that Jack is on a boat with his brother and his brother’s spouse and their boat is taking on water. Alicia tries to reason with the group in trying to save Jack, but Strand stands firm. It’s his boat and that’s all there is to it.
“It’s okay to be angry.”
After the altercation between Chris and his father, Madison goes to talk to Chris. She shares a story of her own from when she was 13 years old where she hit her father and the consequences were not pretty. Madison then shares that what Travis did was because he had to. And if Travis had not done it, then she would have.
As the group settles in the dining area of the boat, Chris is seen coming out of his room, then out to the back of the boat. While the group is sitting down to eat dinner, they hear a splash. Nick runs out, seeing Chris is in the water. He jumps out after him, thinking that Chris is trying to kill himself. Chris explains to Nick that all he wanted to do was swim. Nick, being understanding, joins in with the fun as the rest of the group try to persuade both of them to come back in. Chris and Nick appear to be having fun.
While Nick is underwater, another body comes overhead. Going up towards it, it is revealed to be a reanimated corpse. When the scene pans out, we see an overturned boat riddled with bullets and lots of debris and corpses in the water. Chris turns around and swims back to the boat, but Nick swims to the wreckage to investigate.
“Whoever did that, they’re coming back.”
Before going outside with to be with the group, Alicia tries to get on the radio and tell Jack that they won’t be able to come and rescue him because it’s too risky. Jack replies back to her, in an ominous way, telling her that he’ll see her soon.
