Fences – Bright Soil
By: Alejandra Gil M.
Q) Your LP Bright Soil is out now. What was the songwriting process like? Do you need music before you can come up with the lyrics?
A) All at once. Trust god and help others.
Q) The album features guests like Wesley Schultz (The Lumineers), Felix Pastorius (son of Jaco Pastorius), Jeremiah Green (Modest Mouse),and Ryan Lewis (Macklemore & Lewis). What was it like working with them?
A) They are my friends. The work felt more like catching up, playing pool or watching a movie. Just was happy to be with my friends.
Q) The LP includes tracks like “Hell,” “No One,” “Thin Legs” and “Werewolf Palm” amongst others. Do you have a personal favorite from this album?
A) “Hell” intro is my favorite. See the song “crisis” by Jaco Pastorius. That’s what hell is.
Q) Was there a song that was more emotional for you to record or maybe challenging for you in some way?
A) “Bath.”
Q) A music video for “Werewolf Palm” by Hannah Gray Hall was also released. How involved were you in the concept behind it?
A) I wrote the whole thing. I like film and books more than music. Music just TRIES to convey what they both convey with more ease.
Q) Bright Soil follows Fences and Lesser Oceans. What do you think is the biggest change in your music in those years?
A) I got older and sadder and more ragged by God’s hands. I suppose I fight with the lord a little more.
Q) You said that you just wanted to sound cohesive with this LP. What do you hope people take away from it?
A) I have decoupled myself from the work. What other people think of me. or my work is none of my business. I used to care, and I went mad.
Q) You are also releasing a new book of poetry The Horses in Montana due out in October. What are some themes you’ll be exploring in it?
A) A memoir broken into short story form with heavy prose.
Q) Any plans for going on tour for either your new music or to promote your book of poetry?
A) Yes! Can’t wait to buy some more truck stop mugs.
Q) Last time we asked who you would like to collaborate with since working with Macklemore and Tegan and Sara and you said Phoebe Bridgers. Do you still have that dream or are there other artists you’ve added to your list of dream collabs?
A) God.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of the wonderful music that you make?
A) I love you. Always have.
