Flyana Boss – TRY ME

By: Mariah Thomas

Q) How would you describe this new era of your music?

Bobbi: This is Halloween Flyana.

Folayan: We’re still those fun bitches but we’re getting a little bit eerie and dark for Halloween.

Q) Who are some artists that inspire you?

Folayan: We gather our inspiration from so many different types of artists so we love this question and we say someone new everytime. Today, I’m going to say Van Gogh.

Bobbi: Van Gogh cut his ear off and sent it to his lover, his passion is inspiring.

Q) Your new single “TRY ME” drops on Halloween! What was the decision behind the chosen release date for this song?

Folayan: We are very whimsical and we love to dress up. So, we felt that it was very appropriate for Flyana Boss to do something on Halloween.

Bobbi: Fairy wings and elf ears are our everyday attire, so it’s right up our alley.

Q) Talk about the concept of “TRY ME” and your songwriting process for it.

Folayan: The concept of “TRY ME” is quite straightforward – it’s angsty, it’s fun. The writing process was that we sent this beat to a writer and artist that we really love– shoutout Amelia Moore– and she made the chorus and we put our verses on it!

Q) The promotion rollout for “TRY ME” is fun and filled with many costumes and cosplay. What was your favorite look to do?

Folayan: Our all time favorite look we have done is Lumpy Space Princess and Princess Bumblegum from “Adventure Time.”

Bobbi: We really ate those looks up. Go check ‘em out on our socials.

Q) Fans have been able to follow your musical journey through your cleverly titled EP this ain’t the album and singles. How does this set the stage for what you have planned next musically?

Bobbi: We’ve been locked in and in a liberating creative space so we’re excited to share what we’ve been creating with our fans.

Q) Most of your music lives in these multi-genre worlds as you infuse hip-hop with pop, rock, punk and more. You both have now entered a new creative space as DJs. How has your personal music style as a duo influenced the sets you put together?

Folayan: Bobbi is from Motown so she loves a good slow jam. A 70s, Luther Vandross type style – she got a real old soul. So, mixing that in with new Hip-Hop has been so much fun. I’m from Dallas and you know everything is bigger in Texas, so I’m mixing Mike Jones with Erykah Badu, maybe a little Jamie Foxx.

Q) What inspired the shift into the DJ space of music?

Bobbi: Our producer, Big Mark, was telling us we should DJ because we’re such a vibe wherever we go, it’s always a party with us.

Folayan: So we started DJing on our Twitch for fun and now we love it. We’re having our first set at our release party on 10/30 and at Soho house on 10/31, which we are so excited for.

Q) In 2023, you guys took the world by storm with your viral hit “You Wish” and had everyone trying to recreate that iconic running video style. As you’ve put out new music, you’ve continued to adapt your creativity when it comes to your social media videos. What is your typical process for planning a new filming style?

Bobbi: Thank you. It’s different every time. We’re butterflies – we’re just flapping our wings in the air and running into things that inspire us and going with the flow. It surprises us every time too.

Q) You have toured with the likes of Ke$ha, Janelle Monáe and The Black Eyed Peas. You have also had your own tour. What are some of your favorite songs to perform at live shows?

Folayan: “You Wish” is a crowd favorite so we have so much fun performing it on stage. And we have an unreleased song called “Mama Mia” which samples “Bohemian Rhapsody” that we have to add to every single set list. It’s such a fun one and it’s one of our all time favorites to perform.

Q) Speaking of performing, you’ll be sharing one of “TRY ME” at your Flayanaween event. What can fans expect from this show?

Folayan: Well, Flyanaween will be our DJ debut and we will be performing so we’re expecting everyone to DANCE!

Bobbi: The theme is Dance or Die. Unless you’re at the bar ordering a drink or in the bathroom, everyone better be dancing!

Q) Who are some artists you would love to collaborate with on music in the future?

Folayan: This is another question we love! We want to collaborate with dope people and do dope things. Today I’m saying Charlie Wilson. That would be so dope.

Bobbi: And Hayley Williams, we would love to do a song with her.

Q) What would you like to say to supporters and fans of you and your work?

Folayan: Thank you to everyone who supports us, listens to our music, streams our content and everything. We literally wouldn’t be able to be living out our dreams like this without you.

Bobbi: Y’all mean so much to us. Shoutout to our Fairy Mob out there.
