Frequency – Gray Line

“Frequency’s” midseason finale Gray Line sets the tone for the second half of the season by revealing who the Nightingale killer is in the most shocking way. In addition to showing the mastermind fans have been trying to figure out all season, we also get to see two relationships blossom. The real question is will they last?

Gray Line starts in 1996 where we see a kid throw a Molotov into Miracella’s (Alyssa Diaz) house, only she’s not there. Her mother ends up having to be sent to the hospital with very severe burns. Miracella isn’t pleased at all so she does the only thing she knows how to do: run to Frank (Riley Smith). Miracella is still dealing drugs like she was told not t, and Stan (Anthony Ruivivar) isn’t very pleased with it. So, she’s on his hit list. Frank pushes her to testify against Stan and then go into Witness Protection, but she has other tricks up her sleeve. It turns out Stan meets every week in a cemetery to receive the cut of his drug operation. All Frank has to do is get him on recording and show it to the DA. If only things were that easy…

To go through with the plan to catch Stan, Frank is going to need someone who knows what they’re doing, which is why he calls in a former NYPD employee with the equipment to help him out. And when the cemetery meeting goes down it’s a total fail Stan shows up to the cemetery alone and automatically begins to speak to Frank through the microphones he knows are planted. How does he know that Frank is spying on him? Satch (Mekhi Phifer). Satch ran to Stan to warn him about what Frank had planned to save his butt.

Not only does Frank have to deal with a backstabbing Satch, but he also has to put up with a pissed off Raimy (Peyton List). Raimy doesn’t agree with the way Frank is putting the Nightingale on the back burner to try and catch Stan or lookout for Miracella. Her mother is in danger and Frank is acting like it’s not the number one priority. Raimy is rightfully upset. So, to put her frustration into something productive Raimy sets off on the next Nightingale lead – Meghan Womack (Britt McKillip).

Meghan called from Bellevue, but by the time Raimy gets there she’s already been transferred to a long-term facility. As she’s going to leave the orderly proclaims how he feels sorry for her step-dad, who seems like nothing but a good guy considering he’s a deacon at Saint Abigail’s. That only sets Raimy off to believe the fact that the deacon is, in fact, the Nightingale. Frank isn’t so sure considering he’s the one who will be killing him.

Dead-set on getting all the information she can from Meghan, Raimy makes her way to the institution where Meghan was transferred. Only Raimy doesn’t find Meghan there because she’s already escaped and is calling Raimy from a payphone on the side of the road. Raimy rushes to get to her, but by the time she gets there she’s already been taken. So, Raimy does as much research as she can, finding out that the day Meghan cut herself and walked through the camp naked the deacon made a complaint saying she tried to kill him. On top of that ridiculous statement, Raimy can’t find any records of Meghan’s mother or little brother.

Raimy takes a small break from the investigation to have a second date with Daniel (Daniel Bonjour) at his loft, only to be interrupted by his girlfriend. Yeah, he is still going strong with Claire (Tatyana Forrest) and sleeping with Raimy on the side. Raimy loses it when she finds out that Daniel is cheating, but ends up running into Claire in the elevator on the way out. Claire’s big, fat engagement ring sticks out like a sore thumb.

Frank, back in 1996, tracks down Meghan at a local record store and pressures her into talking about her life with her stepfather. Meghan revealed that the deacon (Kenneth Mitchell) would take her whole family to camp every year and make them stay in a trailer in the woods where he would beat them all of the time. One day Meghan lost it, attacking the deacon after he struck her brother. By the time the police had arrived her mother and brother backed her stepfather out of fear. They were so scared of what the deacon would do to them so they lied and made Meghan look crazy. The first time the deacon locked Meghan away was when she cut herself and walked through the camp naked. That’s when her mother stopped showing up to see her and her brother had told her that the deacon had killed her. And then not too long after that, her brother stopped coming as well.

After Frank listens to the whole story, he pushes a little more, asking why Meghan thinks the deacon would kill her mother. She informs him that the deacon was mad that her mom was trying to have a life of her own by going back to work at the hospital as an RN. Nightingale confirmed.

Raimy is set on having Frank execute the deacon immediately, but Frank is still hesitant. He wants Raimy to find the Meghan in 2016 before they move forward. Just when Raimy is about to head to the deacon’s home, he shows up at the precinct. He’s tired of being treated like a fugitive by questioning his neighbors and having police cars sit outside his house. Unfortunately, it turns out that the deacon’s alibi of being in a 24-hour sit-in with an addict in need turns out to be true. He also, very conveniently, hasn’t seen his wife since she left to go live in Arizona, but he did send her monthly checks. Isn’t that just a real love?

Raimy doesn’t believe one thing of his story so she jets to the deacon’s house before he can arrive. She knows something is up with him and she’s determined to figure out the truth. As she is surveying the area of the house she hears loud banging coming from inside so she breaks in. She’s halfway up the stairs when her cellphone rings out loud and suddenly the banging has stopped. Raimy misses the call and gets a voicemail from Satch revealing that the deacon paid a woman to pose as his wife and cash his checks in Arizona. Raimy is inside the house all alone with the Nightingale and she quickly realizes that fact as she’s entering a huge hole in the middle of his bedroom. The wall is full of duffel bags, but before she can inspect them the deacon comes up from behind and attacks her. It doesn’t take long for Raimy to overpower him, leading him to jump in his car and escape. Raimy goes back inside to dig around the duffel bags, finding one full of shoes, one full of clothes and one filled with MEGHAN’S MOTHER’S CORPSE. And to finally tie it all together, the corpse’s hands are tied together with rosaries. This should be enough information for Frank to be on board with executing that psychopath.

Frank goes to see Julie (Devin Kelley) and Daniel goes to see Raimy (both at the same time but one in 1996 and one in 2016). Frank tells Julie that he wants to let her know about everything that happened when he was undercover. Daniel, in the same mindset, tells Raimy that he knows he made the wrong choice by proposing to Claire and he wants Raimy to stick by him when he breaks it off. This is when both couples hook up. At the same time. In the same room. In the same bed. In different years.

After they both get what they both clearly needed, they meet up on the ham radio to discuss their findings. They both agree that the deacon is the Nightingale killer. Now, Frank is on board to kill him.

Overall this midseason finale was one of the best episodes of the season so far. The second part of the season is surely set to start off with a bang now that Frank and Raimy both know who the Nightingale is. Let’s also hope that both of their relationships can withstand the last four episodes of the season. In a fairytale land, the Nightingale would be murdered, Julie and Frank would be alive in 2016 and Raimy and Daniel would live happily ever after. But this isn’t that and we know there are surely going to be twists coming our way.
