Interviews
Gavin MacIntosh – The Fosters
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Where do we pick up with “The Fosters?”
A) In Season 3, we pick up with Connor and Jude having a lot more interaction. I can’t tell you too much about what happens, though.
Q) We left off with Connor and Jude in the hospital. Where do things stand between them?
A) I think there will be a little bit of repercussions with Connor’s dad, but the writers have such a great way of intertwining the storylines and writing the scripts that whatever happens Connor will be there for Jude and Jude will be there for Connor. They really care about each other so whatever happens they are going to be there for one another.
Q) It was an incredible progression we got to see in Connor last season. Talk about his growth last season.
A) Last season had Connor confessing his feelings to Jude. Then, towards the end of the season, it was more Connor confessing his feelings to his dad, which I think was a lot harder with the continuous struggle. Hopefully, in Season 3 his dad will understand his feelings. With left off with him allowing Jude to come see his son and he knows that Connor is gay. I think he has sort of accepted it, but doesn’t 100% agree with it.
Q) Jude confessed he was gay to his sister and Lena knows about it. Will we be seeing Jude go public or share his secret with others?
A) That’s the dynamic in Season 3. It starts out with Jude not wanting to go public and Connor does. Connor thinks everyone should know and Jude isn’t in agreement. He doesn’t want to be labeled as “gay.” There is nothing wrong with that, but he doesn’t want to be the odd man out. Not that you are if you are gay, but he doesn’t want to feel that way.
Q) Do you consider this a step back in their relationship because Jude was originally fighting and wanting for them to be together publicly?
A) I think Jude and Connor’s relationship has its ups and downs, just like any relationship. But they are very strong together so I don’t think it is a step backward for them. It’s just a little nick in their relationship, but they will definitely fix it.
Q) Will we get to see them going out socially together like on dates?
A) I think there are going to be some moments. There will be dates and things between Connor and Jude that are more core moments.
Q) How do things stand between Connor and his dad?
A) Connor came out to his dad, but I still get the feeling he doesn’t approve. he accepts it, but doesn’t approve of his son’s decision. I think that makes more material for the writers to use.
Q) What do you think it is about Jonnor that the fans has made the fans embrace them so much?
A) The fanbase for Jonnor has been incredible. There has been so many fans that are so supportive of their relationship and the characters. I’m really grateful for all of them.
Q) What have you taken away from your portrayal of Connor?
A) Before I booked “The Fosters” I didn’t really know many of these issues existed. I didn’t know that gay people were discriminated so much and the problems with the LGBT community. Now that I have done the show, it has opened my eyes so much to all these problems. I’ve really been educated and it has made me who I am today.
Q) What kind of response to your character have you been getting through social media?
A) There are some interesting reactions on social media. It means so much to me. I’ve gotten so many stories of fans saying watching me portray this character has helped them come out to their parents and in public, which is such an amazing thing!
Q) Jude painted his nails as a subtle hint to his feelings. With Jonnor not going public, will we be getting more hidden signs between the two of them?
A) I don’t know if they are not going public. This is just more of an issue of conflict for them. It may resolve and Jude may decide they should go public. It may not. Maybe Connor will back down. You’ll have to find out what is going to happen.
Q) What have been some of your most favorite moments from filming over the years?
A) My favorite scene to film was the nail polish scene, when Connor went blue for Jude. It was the first time he confessed how he felt for Jude and it was showing him that he really cares about him. That is my all time favorite scene.
Q) Is there anything else about the season that you really want fans to know?
A) I think there may be a point when Connor has to stand up for himself and Jude. There is a point where he has to say it and use his voice. Fans should look forward to that.
