Ghosts – Jay’s Friends

Sam (Rose McIver) is showing a guest at the B&B the way to get to the trails before resuming conversation with Trevor (Asher Grodman), Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), and Flower (Sheila Carrasco) over how they can drum up more business. Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) walks in and starts telling Sam about some friends he made while playing basketball that he would like to invite over to watch a game. Happy to hear that he has finally started making friends, Sam reminds the ghosts that since leaving the city Jay has not had much of a chance to make new friends. With Sam having the ghosts as friends and leaving Jay out of this conversation, it proves Jay’s point of why he needs to make his own friends.

Meanwhile in another part of Woodstone, Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) wakes up to an all-too-chipper Pete (Richie Moriarity) greeting him. Sasappis tells Pete that he seems too perky in death. This prompts Pete to become a darker, angstier version of himself as a challenge to Sasappis.

Later on Jay and his new friends are watching the game as Trevor, Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), and Flower spy on them. Micah (Drew Tarver), the leader of the group, seems to boost Jay’s ego a little bit in terms of basketball references about how he and Sam took a chance on opening Woodstone. Micah continues talking to Jay in basketball terms while showing off an odd white patch on his arm. While Flower is intrigued by Micah’s words, this leaves a bad taste in Trevor’s mouth, and he seeks out Sam to tell her that Micah and his friends need to go.

Trevor explains to Sam that Micah and his friends are into a pyramid scheme, which confuses Hetty. Putting it into terms of “snake oil,” Hetty tries to encourage Sam to potentially buy what they are selling while Sam decides to go investigate. When she reaches the room where Micah’s friends are watching the game, Jay has taken Micah on a tour of the mansion. Alana (Caroline Day) and Norm (Ized Etemadi) explain to Sam the ongoings of their group and how Micah’s vitamin patches were developed from a dream he had. In this moment Flower immediately realizes the group that Jay invited into the house are part of a cult.

Sam tries to figure out how to approach Jay and tell him about the cult, but Flower gets very defensive over it. This piques Alberta’s (Danielle Pinnock) interest. When Jay walks into the room, it is obvious that Jay has really bonded with Micah and even shows off his own patch to Sam. While Jay is not aware of it, he has already joined the cult and even sells ten boxes of vitamin patches. The ghosts look on in concern.

When Sasappis enters his and Pete’s room, he is greeted by a very dark version of his roommate. While Pete wishes that Sasappis would ask him to go back to his original self, Sasappis decides that he likes this new Pete and does not want Pete to go back to his old self. This frustrates Pete but he is still willing to go along with what Sasappis wants.

On the lawn, Trevor and Hetty watch Micah and the cult followers bending and stretching. As Hetty stares at Micah’s backside while Trevor tries to see the merit in having all the hot women to watch, Jay walks up to greet Micah and the group in their stretches. The conversation starts to go a little awry once Micah tells Jay he is 742 years young. It is then Jay realizes they are a cult.

Deciding to push Flower for answers, Alberta decides to approach her and ask what happened earlier when she got defensive. Flower explains to Alberta that when she was still alive her brother had tried to get her out of the cult. When Flower decided to stay, the cult banned her brother from coming back and she never saw him again. Alberta tries to explain to Flower that cults can be bad, even though Flower has believed otherwise for many decades.

Running in to find Sam, Jay explains that he has come to realize Micah and his friends are in a full-blown cult. While Trevor runs in trying to dissuade Sam from getting rid of the “hotties”, Sam is ready to kick Micah and his friends to the curb. Unfortunately for Sam and Jay, when they go to confront Micah they find him and his cult moving into the B&B. When Micah reminds Jay that he signed for those boxes of patches, it also included a stipulation that the cult could move into the B&B for one trillion years.

Sam, Jay, and the ghosts gather to discuss their options. While Sam and Jay’s lawyer said the contract will not hold up in court, the amount of legal fees and time it would take to evict them will be problematic. While Pete does not offer any cheery “can-do” attitude and sticks to his dark persona, Flower does know of one fool-proof way to break up a cult: a non-member sleeping with the leader.

When Alana is sitting alone watching TV with Trevor and Flower alongside her, Alberta comes in and suggests that Flower try to find a way to reach her brother. Flower explains that her brother was killed in Vietnam, as she was told he was M.I.A. (missing in action). Trevor explains that M.I.A. does not mean he is dead and therefore offers to look him up instead. Flower is confused by the gesture so Alberta tells Trevor to go ahead with it.

Sam and Jay go to confront the group and reason with Micah, who refuses to back down from his stance of staying at the B&B. Deciding to try Flower’s tactic, Sam proclaims that she has slept with Micah. At first Micah is able to convince his followers that Sam is not telling the truth. Fortunately for Sam, Hetty provides information about particular marks on Micah’s derriere that immediately send the group into a bit of a tizzy. Before the followers can have any more doubts, Micah assures them that this was all a test and that they will be leaving the B&B to get away from the non-believers.

Sasappis approaches Pete in their room while Pete watches the sunset. Sasappis tells Pete that being a ghost for so long has started getting to him and maybe he is the one that needs to lighten up. Pete explains that even with his chipper attitude he has his moments. Using the sunset as an example, Pete goes on to tell Sasappis that sometimes the sunsets are less stellar. But sometimes there’s a sunset that still manages to “knock his socks off.”

Later that day, Sam approaches Flower with some news about her brother. Sam was able to reach out to him via e-mail and, pretending to be a cult follower along with his sister, saying that Flower wanted her brother to know that she loved him so much. Receiving a response, Sam hands the phone over to Flower so she can read the email that states he is A.I.A. – alive in action. As Sam, Alberta, Trevor, Sasappis, and Pete listen to Flower read the e-mail from her brother, Pete explains to Sasappis that this is why he still watches sunsets. Touched by the gesture, Flower goes to hug Sam and instead goes through her…which gets Sam stoned.
