Ghosts – The Perfect Assistant
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
To get more help in running a now-thriving B&B, Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) have decided to hold interviews for an assistant. Flower (Sheila Carrasco), Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), Trevor (Asher Grodman), Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) and Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) watch on in amusement as latest candidate Freddie (Mike Lane) presents with an impressive resume. After some light banter and Freddie’s deep appreciation for the movie Speed, Sam and Jay decide to hire him.
As Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) has a window conversation with Bjorn (Christian Jadah), Thorfinn learns about Bjorn being bullied by another ghost and tries to offer advice. Unfortunately, the bully turns out to be none other than Judy Farnsby (Lindsey Broad). Judy overhears the conversation between Thorfinn and Bjorn and interjects in a mocking tone. Seeing that Bjorn’s bully is a woman, Thorfinn tries to understand how a woman could be a bully.
While Freddie is still inside Woodstone learning the ropes, Flower, Sasappis and Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) notice that there is a woman asleep inside Freddie’s car. The ghost awakens and introduces herself as Jessica (Nicole Sakura), a car ghost that died while driving back from a boozy brunch with her girlfriends. The ghosts are intrigued and a little jealous as Jessica is not only bound to the car and a five-foot border around it, but she goes everywhere with Freddie while he delivers food. When Jessica talks about all the pizza delivery, Sasappis is extremely interested in knowing more about their new car ghost.
In Woodstone Sam shows Freddie the ropes while Hetty and Alberta feel snubbed by Sam’s lack of response. As Sam finally decides to go for the walk that Hetty and Alberta have been waiting for, Freddie decides to join Sam to become familiar with Woodstone. Hetty and Alberta are even more upset with Freddie’s presence.
Pete (Richie Moriarity) and Flower console a distraught Thorfinn over Bjorn’s issue with Judy. As a parent himself, Pete tries to advise Thorfinn that he should advise Bjorn to talk with Judy rather than to utilize violence. With Thorfinn’s desire to use harsh words over honest words, he is apprehensive about this approach.
On the way back from their walk, Sam sees the ghosts flagging her down to introduce her to Freddie’s car ghost, Jessica. Sending Freddie back inside to help Jay, Sam approaches Jessica and introduces herself. Once Jessice learns that Freddie has been hired to be their assistant and will no longer be working in food delivery, she reveals that she was killed by Freddie in a hit-and-run, then had her body dumped. Shocked by the news, Sam goes to find Jay and inform them of this new development.
The news of Freddie’s hit-and-run sends Sam and Jay into a panic, considering that Jay is the best assistant they have ever had. Seeing Freddie’s departure as an opportunity to have Sam to themselves again, Alberta and Hetty try to convince Sam that they need to get rid of Freddie. The decision becomes harder upon Freddie coming in to interrupt Sam and Jay to let Jay know that he has digitally catalogued Jay’s recipe book.
Seeing Bjorn at the window, Pete takes the opportunity to try and talk to him about the situation with Judy. Using communication as a key factor, Pete advises Bjorn to not use Thorfinn’s tactics and just be honest. Thorfinn catches wind of the conversation between Pete and Bjorn, assuming that Pete is trying to replace him as the father figure in Bjorn’s life. Angered by Pete’s actions, Thorfinn advises Pete that they will be talking…after watching “Housewives.”
In the kitchen, Freddie is upset as Sam and Jay proceed to let him go from his job. Freddie tries to find out why he was fired, wondering if it was over a Diet Coke that he had taken with Jay’s permission. Meanwhile outside at Freddie’s car, Isaac, Alberta, Sasappis, and Hetty try to find out what Jessica’s superpower is. As Jessica makes the car alarm go off with keys from her purse, Sasappis pokes holes in Jessica’s original story to Sam about being hit by Freddie’s car. The truth is that Jessica was driving the car Freddie now owns and hit a pole. Jessica asks that the ghosts keep this information from Sam and Jay, as she enjoys Freddie’s food delivery job and the traveling it has afforded her. The ghosts then see a distraught Freddie walk out of Woodstone, which leaves them uneasy.
Without Freddie’s help in learning the new systems, Sam and Jay are in disarray. Sasappis, Isaac, Alberta, and Hetty watch on in guilt, knowing that Freddie’s help kept Sam and Jay organized. Upon hearing that Sam and Jay have to cancel their dinner reservations for the following night, they crack and decide to tell Sam the truth. Sam is immediately on board with getting Freddie back, so her and Jay get right to work.
With “Housewives” over, Thorfinn confronts Pete over his conversation with Bjorn. Flower tries to play peacemaker between the two and advises Thorfinn that Pete was only trying to give advice like a cool uncle. Even though Thorfinn thinks that Pete is trying to upstage him as a father, Pete then explains to Thorfinn that he had a father just like him who tried to use violence rather than communication. Thorfinn then understands that he needs to let Bjorn handle the situation in the way that suits him best.
Sam and Jay’s goal of bringing Freddie back has been met with roadblocks. As Freddie will not pick up his phone for them, they have resorted to ordering an insane number of burritos in hopes that Freddie will eventually deliver to their house so they can re-hire him. As the burritos pile up and all hope seems lost, Freddie finally arrives with a burrito order. Sam and Jay apologize and ask Freddie to come back. Seeing the pile of burritos and realizing just to what lengths Sam and Jay went to talk to him, he agrees to come back as long as he can have three of those burritos. They agree and as Freddie celebrates getting his job back, Sasappis runs outside to go see Jessica.
Using Pete’s advice, Thorfinn has another conversation with Bjorn. Luckily for Bjorn, he took Pete’s advice and talked to Judy…who apparently bullied Bjorn because she likes him. Thorfinn is pleased to hear this and decides to give Bjorn the sex talk, even though Pete reminds Thorfinn that Bjorn was married with children before he died. Thorfinn tells Pete that sex with a Dane is different. While Thorfinn gives Bjorn the “birds and bees” talk, Flower tells Pete to let Thorfinn have this one.
