Gorran – I Don’t Love You Anymore
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My music is definitely in the alt-pop realm, but I really don’t like to put a label on it. I’m influenced by so many different styles of music. Every piece of music I’ve ever listened to, I feel I have subconsciously analyzed and taken notes in my head on what I feel works and what doesn’t, lyrically, sonically, emotionally, structurally, etc., and so my songs all end up sounding pretty eclectic as a result.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I’m influenced by artists such as Lauv, Post Malone and Billie Eilish. They are innovative and exciting, which is what I strive to be with my music.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “I Don’t Love You Anymore.”
A) The song is based on the moment that I realized I was no longer in love the person I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with. It was a really difficult time for me and so many thoughts and feeling came out of me through the song. I have the song to thank for helping me deal with everything that was going on during that period.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think saying goodbye to someone you once loved is the idea that really resonates with people with this song. Whenever I sing it live it’s amazing how quiet the room becomes during the verses. I feel like people really listen to the words.
Q) In what way did the song help you heal from a tough breakup?
A) It allowed me to get my thoughts and feelings down in a song, which allows you to process things more thoroughly. I started writing the song around two months before we broke up, while I still was in the relationship, not realizing at first that the song actually meant what it meant. Once we broke up, I found it really easy to finish writing the lyrics, as there was nothing holding them back anymore.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I often write on train journeys around London. I started doing that when I went to The BRIT School and I haven’t stopped. Generally, the topline melody comes to me first, a lot of the time with a lyric accompanying it. I record this into the voice notes app on my phone and then I begin to form the lyrics and the structure in my notes app. But, to be honest, it entirely depends on the song – sometimes it’s chords that start the writing process and sometimes it’s a powerful lyric I’ve come up with.
Q) How did your time at the BRIT School help you develop your live show?
A) At BRIT there is the Obie Theatre, which is a large professional stage where we would regularly perform to audiences of around three hundred people. I gained so much experience performing on that stage and it really helped set me up for what I’m doing now.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Gorran performance?
A) They can expect an acoustic set, but with all the energy, emotion and power of a fully produced show with a full band.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) My favorite venue so far has definitely been the Roundhouse in London – it’s such an iconic venue and was just such an experience. I also love the Bedford in Balham, as it’s such a nice place – the stage is literally carpeted, it feels so homey.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming soon?
A) At the moment I’m just seeing where my writing takes me. I can see something forming though. I have plans.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I think the first name the springs to mind is Lauv. I think that would be so good. But, honestly, there’s so many people I’d love to work with that it’s hard to whittle it down.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) It’s actually been the new Kanye album. I love “Closed On Sunday” and the opener “Every Hour” is really powerful. The whole album feels refreshing to me. Almost everything he does sparks my attention. His stuff is so interesting and unexpected.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It allows me to directly reach out to my supporters and also for them to directly reach out to me. That interaction feels really special because I get to hear firsthand what my music means them personally.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much for listening. You mean so much to me. I can’t wait to share more music with you soon.
