Great Good Fine Ok – Blame
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us about your new song “Blame.”
A) “Blame” is the second release from our upcoming EP and definitely our most disco inspired song yet. “It’s not my fault but it’s my problem.” It’s an interesting dilemma when someone else’s issues become your problem. It signifies a level of seriousness that we all desire – a symptom of the most serious kind of love. But those moments don’t always feel great in the moment, (the grass is always greener on the other side) but would it be better to have only your own messes to clean up forever? When is enough, enough and how do you decide if and when to sacrifice a relationship? And what does it mean if you start taking the blame too often? These are some of the questions that inspired us while writing the song.
Q) What was the process like for creating this new song?
A) In 2021 we did a writing trip to upstate New York with our good friends and long time collaborators Connor and Riley McDonough where we started “Blame.” On that trip we also wrote “Paradise,” “Someone To You” and “Love Runs Out.” Years later we dusted it off and continued to work on it in LA with Toby McDonough. Many versions later and we finally cracked the code!
Q) Since its release, what kind of reaction have you been receiving from GGFO fans?
A) The fans seem to love it! It definitely feels like quintessential GGFO – danceable, fun, and has a throwback vibe. There’s even a key change!
Q) What message or emotion do you hope lingers with those who check out “Blame?”
A) The concept is super relatable so we hope people hear it and connect with it. It can be really heavy to constantly have to clean up someone else’s messes – it would be cool if the song brings some levity to that situation for people.
Q) The song is out now. Have you already been playing it live or are you saving that for a possible upcoming EP or album to promote?
A) The song will be part of a larger project and we hope to play it live at some point. It’ll be a fun one!
Q) Which song(s) are still your favorites to perform at live shows?
A) I really still enjoy playing all of our songs. I don’t think it’ll ever get old to see people singing along and dancing to these babies that mean so much to us. A few that have become especially fun for me though are “Easy,” “Like Home” and “Touch.” On the last tour there was a palpable excitement during these. It’s like magic when that happens.
Q) Who are some of your favorite artists to listen to these days?
A) The 1975, Tame Impala, Benny Sings, Jacob Collier… to name a few. So many great artists right now!
Q) What advice would you give to those starting out in the music industry?
A) It’s such a crazy music industry right now, I’d say to only get into it if you love the journey. The ups and downs are so unpredictable that you need to love doing it day to day. I’d also say collaborate as much as possible and take as much time as needed to make special music. We live in a world where artists are encouraged to release songs so often that sometimes quality is sacrificed. I really still believe that the cream rises to the top so take the time to be inspired.
Q) You’ve done collabs with The Chainsmokers and Digital Farm Animals. Who would you love to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) That’s a tough question since we are huge fans of so many artists. In the EDM space it would be cool to do a song with Fred Again or Mura Masa. Other than that, a Taylor Swift collab would slap! I also always say Jay Z when asked this question because of course.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the music you make?
A) A massive THANK YOU. Luke and I have been doing GGFO now for ten years and it’s only possible because we have such amazing, supportive fans. We are so grateful that we get to do it.
