Grey’s Anatomy – All Eyez On Me
By: Jamie Steinberg
“Back in med school, I knew a guy who spent his weekends as a magician for children’s’ birthday parties. It makes a weird kind of sense. If you’re going to saw a person in half, you’re going to need to practice.” – Meredith Grey
And so begins this week’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” We see Jackson, Bailey, Torres and Grey working on a dead body. Callie assures them this is a dry run, but it will be the first of many. Cut to Hunt talking about how he received a phone call from a colleague at a military facility near Seattle. There is a man who has a tumor in his leg, leaving him with only a short life expectancy. Torres (Sara Ramirez) has the idea though to cut off his good leg and reattach it to the middle of his body, thus allowing him to live and even walk again. Just as they finish the very first dry run, Hunt (Kevin McKidd) approaches the team and says that the patient has taken a fall and needs their help right away. Of course, the team would have liked more time to practice, but now they must head to the hospital for an “away game.”
While on the ride to Bauer Hospital, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) tells Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) that Kurt Morgan had been asking about her. Jackson (Jesse Williams) says he is a great guy and Callie talks him up as well. Grey isn’t in the mood to talk men though.
Upon arriving at the medical facility, Bailey tells everyone to be on their best behavior. Callie assures her that she has spent a lot of time working with the military so she will be “respectful and won’t ruffle any feathers.” After pleasantries are exchanged between all the doctors from both hospitals, Major Thorpe (Scott Elrod) interrupts and he is not happy. He is Sergeant Carson’s (Brett Zimmerman) surgeon and is annoyed that the docs from Grey’s are there to do a new and risky surgery on his patient. Callie assures him that him referring to them as “the dream team” is accurate and the sooner he realizes that they have his patient’s best interest in mind the sooner they can get down to saving a life.
Back at Grey’s, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and DeLuca (Giacomo Giannotti) are still hooking up. Maggie wants to keep them a secret still, but DeLuca doesn’t get it since her sisters and her birth father [Webber] knows. He says this secret life is getting ol
Cut to Karev (Justin Chambers) in the ER helping some cheerleaders who fell during a routine. One cheerleader, Maxine, is freaking out because they were in the final round, about to qualify for nationals.
Away at Bauers, the Greys staff go over the details of the surgery with the Sergeant to be sure he knows all of the risks involved with the procedure. He says he has missed the births of two of his children and has another baby on the way. He is sure he wants the surgery because he wants to live. We then jump to the entire surgical staff prepping and one of the Bauer doctors talking to Jackson. She’s flirting hard, to which Jackson is oblivious. Jo (Camilla Luddington) is looking on with a smirk and after the doctor leaves explains to Jackson that she caught on to the chemistry between them. Jackson fanes innocence, but Jo says he didn’t have to say a word because his whole body is a flirt.
Back in the ER, the other cheerleaders are talking about who caused the fall and want to kick the girl responsible off the team. Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) confesses to Penny (Samantha Sloyan) that in high school she was the captain of the cheerleaders. She explains the hierarchy of cheerleaders and Penny wonders if intubating them is what it will take just to get them to be quiet. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) meets with cheerleader Maxine to see if she has a concussion. Karev tries to calm Maxine down who is busy working herself up with stress about having wanted to win so badly. Amelia orders a head CT while Karev tells her that she has the BP of a 50 year old so she needs to chill.
Dr. Warren (Jason George) has been ordered up to Psych while explaining to the other two doctors with him that he may be older than most of them, but he is not old. Hearing a patient scream, they rush to find the patient in need. When he begins to crash, Dr. Warren finds he is bleeding out of his belly and wants to rush the patient to the OR. Unable to find a pulse, Warren wants to open him up then and there (much to the dismay of the psychiatrist standing nearby). Unwilling to wait for an attending to assist, Warren orders a fellow doctor to find him something he can open up the patient up with where he is.
At Bauer, Callie assures the team everything will be fine, but “we just have to be squirrels about this.” Jackson doesn’t understand what she means so Callie explains that squirrels store nuts for the Winter – not doing it all at once, but a little at a time. She says that everyone has their part to play so everyone just needs to “handle their own nuts.” Bailey says that everyone will be fine and agrees with Callie. She takes a moment though for praying and Grey wants to know if she is looking for a sign.
The doctor sent to find a scalpel for Warren stumbles upon Webber. He explains the situation and tells Webber, in fact, he just really needs him more than anything. While trying to save the patient’s life, Warren is still arguing with the psychiatrist about opening the patient up while in the Psych Ward. Warren assures the doctor that the patient will die if he doesn’t open him up right away. Thinking fast, he grabs a clipboard and pulls off the clip part of it. He then uses that cut into the patient’s stomach – just as Webber arrives. Webber is pissed that Warren isn’t following protocol.
Callie and crew are operating and she is getting nervous. She says that after this next part of the surgery, there is no turning back. Bailey reminds her to “be a squirrel” and Callie finds the confidence she needs to go on.
Maggie and Amelia are gossiping as Maxine gets her Head CT. Amelia is saying that Hunt wants to take her on a regular date – no sex, just an average dinner and a movie. Maggie shares that DeLuca wants to take them public. Amelia says that holding hands is sweet and wonders when the last time she just made out with someone, no going any further. Maggie wonders why they have to parade their relationship around. Karev interrupts the girl talk, checking on the cheerleader. Maggie is still complaining, “What if it ends and I’m the woman who dated the pretty boy and it all fell apart.” She wonders who will take her seriously then because she is a very serious person.
During surgery, flirty doctor from before talks with Jackson. Again, he assures Jo he isn’t flirting. Callie checks in with them to see how they are doing and Jo explains that Jackson was caught flirting. Callie says she doesn’t see why not because she doesn’t know him the way that they all do. Jackson doesn’t understand and Callie (humorously) says, “We see you every day. We’re used to all that,” waiving her hand to indicate his well-built body.
Karev tells Maxine that she has a mild concussion, but she needs to find a way to relax her stress. In the ER, all the cheerleaders have begun bickering. Each doctor tries to get the girls to calm down with no luck. It takes a lot of arguing, Maxine crashing and a shout from Karev to get the girls to quiet down. Suddenly, the cheerleaders actually care about their friend. Karev is, luckily, able to stabilize Maxine who is more worried about the Cheer Captain finding out that she was almost down for the count. Maggie explains that Maxine has a heart condition and wants to operate in order to correct it. Maxine wants to wait for her parents and worries about whether or not she’ll still be able to cheer. She doesn’t want to be kicked off the team because cheerleading is her life.
Back in Bauer’s OR, Thorpe is complimenting Grey on her surgical technique. Suddenly, Callie expresses a need to talk to Meredith. Stepping away from the operating table, Callie tells Meredith that she doesn’t thinks he can perform the operation afterall.
In Grey’s ER, Edwards is assuring the cheerleaders that their friend is not dying. The bickering begins again and Edwards tries to calm them down, with no luck. Maggie says she hated high school and Karev smugly says that Maggie was probably eleven years old in high school. Maggie is annoyed that Maxine is stressing her heart over a popularity contest and Karev explains that in high school everything is life and death. He goes on to explain to Maggie that she is basically still acting like she’s in high school the way she is hiding things between her and DeLuca. Maggie says she has always been the nerd girl and Karev says, “Not around here. Around here you’re a prom queen. You’re Allstate. DeLuca is a nobody and that bugs you.” Karev assures her that no one cares. He explains that he lives with a resident, Torres dates one and Meredith married an attending. Way to put things in perspective.
Callie is freaking out because she can’t do the reconstruction. Outside the OR she explains to the dream team that she had to resect wider margins to get to healthy bones so she has no way to duct the leg. Jackson says they don’t have a backup option to which Callie snaps that it isn’t a matter of confidence – it’s the bone. She says that with the bone she has left there is nothing they can do. Bailey says if they stop now then the patient will be worse than when they began. Callie asks for some space and wants them to buy her some time. She assures them she will think of something.
Thorpe notices a very absent Torres and asks Grey when they can expect her back. Meanwhile, Penny and Edwards look on as Warren and Webber operate on the psych patient. Edwards quips that it must be nice that Warren is married to the Chief and that Wilson got to assist with the Sergeant’s surgery because she is dating Karev – Meredith’s bestie. DeLuca tells them to cut it out because Penny is dating Callie. Edwards explains that Penny and Torres were dating before Penny’s arrival so she isn’t “nailing an attending to get ahead.” DeLuca says he doesn’t think that is what is going on, but Edwards and Penny are insistent that these surgical situations are only happening because of who is sleeping with whom. Luckily, Edwards and Penny realize they sound just like the bickering just like the cheerleaders. Penny says she was never a part of the in-crowd and that Edwards was one of them in her past life. Edwards agrees and then heads off, seeming to have had an epiphany.
Webber, in the OR, explains to a fellow doctor that because the patient will survive it means that Warren will only face suspension over criminal assault charges. Webber says that “the time for pulling bone headed stunts is long past.” Warren doesn’t understand and says that he may be a resident at the moment, but he has been a doctor much longer. He says the residents always say how much older he is than they are, but he states he is also much wiser than them. He knows he has to pay a price for that, but he is not an idiot. Webber states that what Warren thought was a calculated risk was what he considers foolish and not to confuse the two. He says that Warren didn’t show skill, but it was bravado and that it is dangerous.
Callie is still seeking space, but Meredith explains that she keeps asking for that herself yet she doesn’t receive it. She also says that people keep bugging her about hot doctors asking for her number and she keeps shutting them down. Callie wants to know why they are talking about this and Meredith explains that it is because it is not always bad when people push you. Meredith explains that she is trying to help her, but Callie explains she can’t because it is her specialty so it is all on her. Meredith tries to calm her down and get her to focus by asking if they had another shot at a trail run to tell her what is the first thing she would do. Callie is able to relax, with Meredith’s help, and explains what she would do to figure things out.
Edwards heads over to the cheerleader lion’s den where they are all giggling and gossiping. She explains that their teammate is down and that their job is to support her. They are her team so it is time they started acting like one. One cheerleader says that it is cool if Edwards talks medicine, but otherwise she has no clue about their cheerleading team. Edwards explains she was head cheerleader for three years at her school and led her team to victory after victory. She breaks down the personal issues between the girls and even uses cheer metaphors for putting things into perspective for them.
Thorpe is pushing for Callie to come back already. He says they don’t have any more minutes, but Bailey states she thinks there is a couple more minutes available. Thorpe thinks they moved too soon and that the team knew that before coming in, but pushed to do the surgery anyway. Just then, Callie busts through the door and shares her new plan. Bailey smirks and says, “We have a plan. We’re the dream team.” The surgery is a success and the Grey’s staff is exhausted. Miranda checks her cell phone and says she has to leave.
Edwards shows up to Maxine’s hospital room, much to Karev’s anxiety. She assures him that the girls will not make a sound. The cheerleaders say that they will behave and that they just want to see their friend. Karev tells Edwards she needs to show him how she did that, but she explains it’s just a matter of leadership.
Webber is insisting on being updated on every hour on the patient. Warren says that when the patient’s BP goes down one point it isn’t much of a cause of concern. Webber asserts that Warren doesn’t have any room for arguing because he makes the calls from now on. Bailey arrives asking why she received two phone calls about her husband losing his mind. She says she got an earful as to what happened. Warren calls her “Miranda,” which is not the right name to be using during a talk between the Chief and a resident. He corrects himself and she says that she is angered, upset and embarrassed by a resident and her husband. She tells him that he is better than this and she is upset she has to discipline him. He says he is sorry he had to add to her workload, but he was trying to save a life. She says he is lucky and that if it was anyone else that she wouldn’t be letting them off with just a three day suspension. Warren is shocked she is punishing him, but she says he can’t receive special treatment. With that out of the way, Bailey seems impressed and asks for every detail.
Maggie runs in to Dr. Riggs who is surprised she is still on duty. He says they can push their surgery until later that day. She is grateful and also asks a nearby Dr. DeLuca to come over. She tells Riggs she is actually unable to join him that evening because she has a date with DeLuca, whom she has been seeing romantically. Maggie says that it was hard for her to do that and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) teases her that it was hard to watch that.
On the way out of Bauer, Thorpe apologizes to Meredith and says it was great watching her operate. Meredith tells him that it was nice working with him and that she will be following up. A flirty Thorpe says he’d like to follow up with her so she gives him the number to her service and the hospital so he can follow up with Callie. Jackson walks Meredith to the van, explaining that Thorpe was actually asking for her number…As in, for flirting. He says he knows what flirting looks like and that was it. Callie tells Meredith to get in the van, but she heads back to Thorpe to give him her personal number.
“There is a reason we like to keep things to ourselves. When you have an audience, even the smallest moments end up feeling huge. It makes the smallest moments seem positively earth shattering. The key is not letting the pressure keep you from taking big chances. You just go out there, naked and afraid. And pretend no one is looking.” – Meredith Grey
