Grey’s Anatomy – I Wear the Face
By: Jamie Steinberg
“It’s all in the way it presents itself. Sometimes the symptom is actually hiding underneath.” – Meredith
The episode begins with the female interns all vying for a research grant and Catherine (Debbie Allen) and Richard (James Pickens, Jr.) spar over her meddling in the Jackson/April situation. Callie (Sara Ramirez) tries to convince Penny (Samantha Sloyan) that applying for the grant is a good idea, but she wants to stick around since they’ve finally landed in a good place.
April gets a fourteen-year-old patient in the ER with a cough that turns out to be pregnant. The girl is hiding the baby from her mother and begs April (Sarah Drew) not to spill the beans. Meanwhile, Jackson and his mother walk the halls discussing him hiring an attorney to file for fraud against April. In an ambulance, Riggs (Martin Henderson), Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Meredith are off to another hospital for a heart recovering.
Jennifer, the pregnant patient, gets ambushed by her mother who was tracking her phone. Apparently, leaving school to see a doctor falls under the category (along with everything else) as “This is not what we do, Jenny.”
Amelia, Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) and Penny meet with a talented guitarist (guest star Wilmer Valdarrama) who is having a tremor in his hand thanks to a tumor on his brain. Upon meeting Edwards, Kyle (the guitarist) wonders, “Why are all the doctors in this hospital so hot?” You know, basically what every fan of “Grey’s Anatomy” wonders when they tune in. They want to operate and help him get back to playing at top speed.
Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and April discuss Jenny’s secret pregnancy when Warren (Jason George) interrupts to find out if they should speak up on her behalf. On an x-ray, they notice an aneurism and now the tables are turned on who wants to tell about the pregnancy and who doesn’t. The doctors head over to speak to Jenny about an operation, but she wants to wait.
Stuck in traffic, the ambulance team has time to chat. Owen and Meredith discuss Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and her sobriety, which is news to Riggs. He admits to buying her a drink a few months ago. This pisses off Owen causing Meredith to play referee.
Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Edwards discuss Kyle and his good looks. Edwards doesn’t want Penny to distract her from shining during this surgery – a little too loudly as Penny overhears. Over in the OR, Catherine and Webber discuss Jackson (Jesse Williams) going for fraud and getting custody of the baby. Unknown to them though is April walking by and overhearing outside. Catherine says because they aren’t his kids he should keep his opinions to himself, but Webber notes that as his wife he thinks he should have the option of telling he when he thinks she is wrong.
After an hour of traffic, it is time to recover the heart. They hear the patient crashing, but they are unable to recover it. Back at Grey’s, Amelia pushes Edwards to poke at Kyle during the surgery to help keep him calm. Edwards brings up the grant decision, but Amelia says it is not up for discussion. Amelia subtlety seems to let her know she’s on her side though. Heading over to Callie talking to Penny, we find the two discussing the Edwards/Jo issue. Penny is trying out possible confrontation dialogue where we see our girl become a “dark freaking horse.” You go girl!
In the cafeteria, Maggie is begging her fellow doctors to come to the grant announcement. She’d actually like them to come to be a buffer to take the heat off the decision. They aren’t interested. Back with Jenny, her mother is asking the doctor’s professional opinion on having the surgery. April also drops the baby bomb.
Over the operating table, Catherine explains that during her divorce her ex-husband took her son and moved across country. She says she didn’t stop fighting for her son then and she won’t stop now. According to her, there are some things “worth going to war for.”
During Kyle’s operation, things get a little dicey. They find a small bleed in his brain and it is up to Edwards to keep him calm so that Amelia can “freestyle” in order to “be a rockstar too” and save his life. Back with Jenny, it seems her aneurism has ruptured and they need to operate. In the ambulance, Riggs and Hunt are back at it again, but this time it is the heart at issue. Hunt thinks that it is never Riggs’ fault and that disaster follows him around. Meredith says Hunt needs to let go because it was Amelia that took the drink herself and in the same breath, Riggs had tried to talk Hunt’s sister from getting on the helicopter. Hunt chuckles and confesses that Riggs wasn’t near the chopper because he was cheating on her. She was leaving to get away from him.
Back in the operating room with Kyle, Amelia is able to get his brain bleed under control and the tremors to stop. It’s now his turn to “freestyle” by playing his guitar to be sure he truly has it all together. Over with Arizona, April is trying to justify telling the mother about Jenny and the baby. Arizona wants her to understand she knows how she felt. Webber walks over to Catherine to tell her he was proud of her for sharing, but that was her story and she should stop trying to make it theirs. He says the woman he married believed in second chances and wasn’t a pessimist. Her ex-husband may not have known who he married, but Richard sure does.
Thankfully, Jenny’s surgery went fine and her mother is there to see her. Jenny’s mom says again “this just isn’t what we do,” but this time she means in regards to keeping secrets. She assures Jenny never has to be alone because she has her. Edwards heads over to apologize to Penny, which is interrupted by Jo sharing that it seems Penny applied for the grant afterall. Edwards and Jo wonder why she pretending to cheer them on when she went behind their backs and applied. It seems that apology was short-lived.
Hunt runs into Riggs and the two have it out – again. Riggs says this grudge has to stop, but Hunt fills him in on finding out about the cheating. Hunt wants Riggs to stop playing the martyr and trying to take “his people” away from him.
Outside the hospital, Warren and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) discuss him not applying for the grant. He knows his family needs him, but assures her that it will be his turn to shine sometime. Penny tells Callie about winning the grant, which gets some guff from Edwards who asks Amelia why she wasn’t recommended. Amelia assures her that she endorsed Edwards, but she’s too bitter to listen. Checking in on Kyle, he gets Edwards to confess what has her feeling so fiery. He tells her about how his friends weren’t happy when he found success. It seems someone has found a new friend.
At home, Maggie is trying to play therapist to Meredith and Amelia. Meredith explains there will be arguments, but it is just sisters being sisters. Catherine finds Jackson to apologize for overstepping, but he’ll always be her baby. With that in mind, Jackson seems to be invigorating about fighting for his unborn child. April talks with Arizona her worries over Jackson’s possible lawsuit. Arizona offers a helping hand because they are friends, but April says he should be ready for a fight. Walking into her home though she finds an assembled crib with a bow on it and a card that reads, “I don’t want to fight. Whatever you want to do, we’ll do.” Seeming to have some serious remorse, it turns out Jackson gets served with a restraining order.
