Grey’s Anatomy – You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side
By: Jamie Steinberg
“You don’t want to get caught with your pants down.” This is the voiceover we hear from Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) as we see her, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and the kids walking down the stairs to head out for the day. Maggie is wondering where Amelia is and Meredith doesn’t care – it’s time to leave. Just then, we see Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) on the couch with a naked Owen (Kevin McKidd). Apparently, they have awoken them post hookup and the sisters get a surprising look at their friend Owen…
Over at the hospital, Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) has brought in new boyfriend/former patient Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama) who has a new tremor in the opposite hand. Amelia wants to do a scan and Edwards is giving her two cents on treatment. Amelia takes her aside to let Edwards know that she is surprised that they are dating and that she will need to take a step back.
April (Sarah Drew) is having an ultrasound with the help of Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) as Avery (Jesse Williams) looks on. Before she gets down to business, Arizona is warming her way up to asking for their backing in her custody battle when Penny (Samantha Sloyen) walks in. She’s apparently on Robbins’ service, which has now put a wrench in her plans. Focusing back on the ultrasound, they determine the baby has a healthy body. They begin to count fingers and toes when Arizona puts on her patient face. April is familiar with it though so she can tell something is wrong when given a half smile with a distant look. Arizona notices there could be something wrong with the baby’s brain, freaking April out to the max! She wants to know why Arizona would have told her weeks ago that everything was fine when it wasn’t! April wants to know how they can find out more information, but that would involve her being put under general anesthesia for a procedure – something Arizona isn’t ready to explore. A very flustered and confused Robbins yells at Penny to do some tests and get out of her face.
Meanwhile, Meredith has her hands full. An elderly man has taken a tumble and is brought in by ambulance thanks to the help of his doorman. There seems to be a lingering glance between the two, but they are all interrupted when the man’s wife arrives to learn that he’ll need surgery.
Edwards and Kyle meet with Amelia again to see their course of action. Amelia wants to operate – do the same surgery on the opposite side. Kyle isn’t so sure and neither is Edwards, who is still in doctor mode. They decide to go for the surgery and Edwards wants in. Doctors don’t operate on people they have an emotional connection to so Edwards is going to have to take a seat in the waiting room – not the operating room. Warren puts it succinctly with, “Unlike me, they are beholden to you.”
Arizona attempts to ask Karev (Justin Chambers) to back her in the custody battle, but he declines. He doesn’t want to take sides, as he is friends with both Callie and Robbins. Slinking off to have lunch with Karev. Arizona begins to bug out over having someone to support her case. Penny walks up and all hell breaks loose. Robbins has an epic meltdown where she yells at Penny for stalking her, overhearing her conversation, probably reporting it back to Callie (Sara Ramirez) and being generally annoying. Every person in the cafeteria ends up with their eyes on Robbins and when she finally realizes it, she storms off. Someone seems to have forgotten they wanted April labs…Seeing what happened first hand, luckily (in true Webber fashion) he finds Arizona and gives her just the pep talk she needed to hear saying, “You want to lie down? You don’t get to!”
Back with the doorman and the resident, Meredith walks in on the two having a deep conversation and holding hands. The doorman excuses himself and we learn from the patient that he has been married for a long time and has lived a wonderful life. He explains though that the moment he met the doorman he felt a flutter in his chest. He mistook it for a heart attack, but quickly realized it was love. Sweetly, Meredith assures him that she “saw nothing.”
Miranda (Chandra Wilson) and Warren (Jason George) are still in their battle royal over operating. Ben thinks he can handle being an anesthesiologist, but Miranda reminds him he was punished for a reason. Unfortunately, at the hospital, the two end up colliding in the operating room. It wouldn’t be so bad though if Miranda hadn’t started asking all the doctors in the room their opinion on the topic, hoping to prove her point. It ends up backfiring though as it mostly alienates them because they feel like they have to take Bailey’s side as she is Chief of Surgery.
Arizona meets with April and tries to get her to trust her. This isn’t something April is willing to do at this point though, as Arizona has already let her down so many times before.
Callie meets with Meredith and asks her for her support in the court case, to which she is quick to agree. In the waiting room, we find Edwards bonding with the doorman, who are both eager to find out the status of their loved ones (Although, don’t say that to Edwards as she is in denial over her real feelings for Kyle).
The patient that Meredith was working on is finally out of surgery. It seems that during the operation they have discovered why his leg broke so badly – he has bone cancer. The doorman walks in and spends a moment with his sweetheart. Again, they get interrupted by the wife. This time, she thanks the doorman for spending so much time with them. She also says it is fine for him to head back to work. Unwilling to disrupt his life and cast a cloud over his final months, our patient says, “You have always been too good to me. Thank you for everything. You can go now. We’ve kept you long enough.” Sigh…
Arizona meets with April and suggests some new doctors to take over her care. April doesn’t understand why Robbins is dumping her as a patient. Robbins explains that she would rather be her friend than her doctor. With these words, she offers to do the procedure on April that she balked at before. Thankfully, all goes well and we learn that the baby was fine. It was just an error in the ultrasound machine.
Kyle comes out of surgery and everything went fine. DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) meets with Edwards who takes comfort in the fact it is he that came to deliver the news and not Amelia. If Amelia came out then there would have been complications. The fact it is DeLuca means having the B-Team share the news and that’s good news.
Miranda realizes that both of them being stubborn does neither of them any good. While she lets Warren know he is still stuck on the couch, she knows they can get along as long as he sticks to his side of the hospital.
Penny heads out of the hospital to meet up with Callie. She shares that she was on Robbins’ service all day and Callie wonders if she had to take the brunt of Arizona’s issues. Penny, not wanting to make waves, lies and says that it was actually a great day.
With that, we hear Meredith’s wise words: “If you play hard, give it your all, really commit – victory is that much sweeter. “
