Growing Up McGhee – I’m Not Ready For This…
By: Jamie Steinberg
The summer saw the kids turning six years old and we get to see all of the great activities they did. Now, it’s time for the kids to go back to school and their parents are excited for them to get back to learning (a/k/a take a break from the children). With this new adventure comes new clothes and more money out of pocket. Daddy McGhee [Rozonno] attempts to take the sheets off the bed and beg Mama McGhee [Mia] to use her sewing machine to make some clothing magic, but luckily they can pass down some of the clothes from the taller ones to the smaller ones. Elijah begins to worry though as he is taller than the rest so Mama McGhee wants to sit him down and remind him that tall is something to celebrate. What better way to make him feel height helps? Play some basketball.
The family head off to the mall to grab clothes and back to school supplies – times six! Mama McGhee likes to dress the kids alike so she can identify them in a crowd. Unfortunately, the kids are starting to have their own personalities and would prefer to dress themselves. The girls find themselves in the lingerie department and begin to pout over the fact they are a little too young to get their own.
Back at home, Mama McGhee is going over their school supply needs to see what they still may need. Papa McGhee explains spending six times the expenses are a struggle. Additionally, it seems that their teacher last year explained the kids would benefit by being held back a year and repeating kindergarten. So, the family must sit down at the dining room table to have a long talk about having to do the grade again. Isaac is sensitive so Mama McGhee gives him a little bit of love when the tears begin to flow. She sweetly assures all the kids that if they put their best foot forward this year that they will certainly go up a grade next year. Papa McGhee promises to motivate the kids and they all come in for a hands in cheer!
Now it is the first day of school and we watch as the kids get up and ready. “First day of school! First day of my vacation,” says Mama McGhee. All things come to a stop though when she notices a grasshopper in the house! Rozonno Jr. has to set him free and then he gets a bug intervention. Time to stop buying bug sets Mama McGhee! Finally, ready to head out the house, each kid grabs flowers for their teacher yet it all comes to a halt again when Papa McGhee wants a “forced perspective” picture with a tiny toy bus appearing to come into frame. Sadly, his plans fail and the kids have to just take a quick photo and head off to class.
So, with the first day of school started Mama and Papa take a day of relaxation. They have taken the day off of work and they were actually able to sit down, eat lunch together and relax. The two announce, “Silence is golden!” Later in the day it is time to pick up the posse and head out for ice cream. Daddy says it was important to take them out after school so they can hear about their days and make sure they were now comfortable with repeating a grade. All the little ones seemed very positive and they clink ice cream cups to celebrate.
