Q) You’ve been a part of Tame Impala and POND, but how would you describe Gum’s sound?

A) I’d say it’s a more direct line to my own brain, for better or worse.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Too many to name, but lately I’ve been listening to Split Enz, John Lee Hooker, Joni Mitchell, Scritti Politti and Tex Crick.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Would It Pain You to See?”

A) It’s kind of just about trying to discover yourself and look through the confusion of the modern world.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think you can listen to music and try and delve into the meaning or the lyrics, or you can just listen almost instrumentally or atmospherically. It’s up to you.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) You’d have to ask the director Michael Hili – it’s from his own wonderful mind!

Q) What are some themes you’ll be exploring on your upcoming album Saturina?

A) It’s just a reflection of where I’m at in my life at the moment and trying to honor those feelings through music.

Q) Is there a track(s) that holds a special significance for you or one that challenged you the most creatively?

A) I’m quite proud of the song “Fear of Joy,” it felt like something new for me – new creative ground.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Sometimes it’s music first, sometimes it’s a song title first or it could be just a sound. The songs start in lots of different ways.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I make it all myself in my home studio, but then I get outside help from friends, and guest musicians to add depth to the recordings.

Q) What do you hope lingers with listeners who explore Saturina from start to finish?

A) I hope that they just enjoy the music on whatever level they like.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I love to play in South America because the fans are so passionate.

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

Q) I’ve been enjoying listening to the music of Tex Crick, it relaxes me.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) It’s kind of the only way to reach people these days, for better or worse. I like that it feels personal for fans, though.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) I’m eternally grateful for people following my music, buying it or listening to it. It keeps me going and inspires me to make more.
