Interviews
Gunnar Gehl – She’s In My Head
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I think my music is pop music for the most part, but I think it has a lot more depth to it than that word gives it. It’s big anthemic, sing in your car, out with friends music. GOOD MUSIC is what I hope people think my sound is. [laughs]
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I’ve always really admired John Mayer, [Justin] Bieber, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd. I just have so much respect for the way they cultivated their careers and constantly find new sounds and develop as artists.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “She’s In My Head.” What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) She’s in my head is just a really fun song about being so into somebody that they literally can’t get out of your head. It was definitely a personal story for me, but I think it’s connecting with people because it’s an emotion people have been through, and it’s just a fun song.
Q) You’ve worked with incredible songwriters like Julian Bunetta, Teddy Geiger and John Ryan. What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) For me, yeah, I usually need the music or at least a guitar to start writing lyrics. I have notes on my phone of a few lines or a title here and there. But to really write out a song, I need the feelings that music gives off.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I would say I’m pretty involved when it comes to the production of my music. Obviously, I have nowhere near the physical producing talent that these people have, but I definitely know what I like and don’t like and what I want the song(s) to sound like. I also think producing is one of the coolest things to watch.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) YES! We have the music, and are putting out singles as of right now, hoping to see a song like it’s head out. [smiles]
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I mean, I would love to collaborate with so, so many artists. I think collaborations are so important and fun to do… Someone I really think is crushing it right now is Tate Mcrae and I would love to get on a song together. [smiles]
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’m in a big The Weeknd phase right now, listening to his early albums just because I never actually listened to them when they came out. I was younger and obviously knew the singles, but listening to the early projects in full is incredible.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I mean, right now it’s really the only way to connect. When live shows come back I think everything is going to take off and social media will continue to be so, so important to stay connected to fans. But live shows and being face to face is where I want to be.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) THANK YOU. I couldn’t do this without you and I can’t wait for this to only grow and for more music and experiences together.
