Heart Bones – Hot Dish
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) We like to call it Therapy Pop.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Sparks, Wire, Kate Bush. Pretty much anything beautiful.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Open Relations.”
A) I think Sabrina [Ellis] was going through a situation where they were trying to navigate an open relationship and the complex emotions that come with one. So, it helped them put it in perspective by putting me in the main role of what they were going through, like looking from the outside into yourself.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) “Open Relations” is a new wave rocker with big pop hooks and funky bass. We made it impossible not to love.
Q) Ed Dougherty directed the video. How does the concept for the video play into the message behind it?
A) Ed caught the vibe of the song immediately and brought it to life. His vision of it was a little sad and very whimsical, which is basically a great description of Heart Bones as a project. I like that Ed literally took our story to outer space and back.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Sabrina and I normally sit together with a guitar and sometimes piano to hash out a song structure. We both bring elements that we thought of previously and expand on each other’s ideas. The process is pretty quick once we get started. We work well in bursts.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) We record with our bandmates Aaron Baum and Ryan Mach doing much of the production along with Adam Hurlburt, Simon O’Connor, Chris Bierden and whoever might be around to help us add elements. Sabrina and I write songs but don’t know how to run a studio, so it’s very fun to have everyone around to collaborate and work to our individual strengths. We’re very hands on playing instruments and writing hook ideas with everyone. Just fun sound hunting together.
Q) What are some themes you explore on the new LP Hot Dish?
A) It’s all the human condition all the time over here at Heart Bones. Idiosyncrasy, minutia and thriving on grandiose awkwardness.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to the LP as a whole?
A) Awkward can be the most sexy, sad and beautiful.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Heart Bones performance?
A) We are full on energy. Lots of synched up dance moves in tandem. Double the fun!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’m just psyched to get even better at collaborating with Sabrina. There are so many more fun places we can go with this project.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Personally, I love the new Swamp Dogg, Purple Mountains, White Reaper and Moses Sumney albums. We’ve been listening to a lot of Nicole Atkins and Walter Martin in the van, too. Plus, true crime podcasts.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s fun to make dumb jokes and share creative photos. It helps people know what we’re like as people.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you very much, you big sweethearts. We kind of like the way you move.
