Hello Sister – The Gift
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Who are some of the music artists that influenced you?
Scarlett: A big one for us is we love the band Paramore. That’s probably one of my favorite bands. You can kind of hear that in our music.
Grace: Also Avril Lavigne.
Scarlett: Yes, Avril Lavigne. Who else? We like Green Day.
Q) How did you come to work with author Jennifer Weiner on this song?
Scarlett: Yeah, we were so excited when Jennifer Weiner got int ouch with us. She actually asked us to take some of the lyrics and descriptions that she wrote in her book and create a song out of that.
Grace: the book is about two sisters in a band and we were like, “Oh my gosh! This is perfect!” In the book the sisters write a song called “The Gift” and she asked if we would mind bringing this song to life. We spent the last couple of months writing it and recently we put it out. Following the release of the book. It’s been really special and it was really fun to be a part of it.
Gabriella: Yeah, it was really cool because we don’t normally write songs like that because it had kind of a pre-written lyric to it, so it was cool to do something different and explore with that.
Q) What is the process like to breakdown songs for each of your voices?
Grace: Usually, it depends on the song. When we write it is a combination of our ideas. When we come into the studio we write together. I’m the lead singer so I usually take the upper hand with writing at the start. But when I have ideas for singing I’ll hop in the studio and try that. They do harmonies a lot. It really just depends on the song.
Scarlett: And I feel like a lot of the time we all kind of write our own ideas sometimes by ourselves and then bring it to the group. When it’s one of our own ideas, it’s like, “Scarlett, this was your idea, maybe sing the verse for this one.”
Grace: And then we go from there.
Scarlett: Then, we kind of all collaborate like, “I like the tone of your voice on this part.
Gabriella: Mix it up a little bit.
Q) What do you think it is about “The Gift” that fans connect to?
Gabriella: A lot of people really like the song because it’s kind of like a chill, acoustic-y vibe and we’re kind of used to doing rock upbeat. So, it’s kind of like a change for us and our fans. I think they really liked it. I loved doing it.
Scarlett: And I think it was super cool to hear the perspective from Jennifer Weiner’s fans – hearing what they thought about this song because they’re reading the book. And you know when you’re reading a book you kind of visualize the characters or kind of makeup a song in your head like, “Oh, this is what I picture the song would sound like.” And so to be able to actually close the book and play the song I think that’s super cool and I hope that this song is how they imagined it in their heads.
Grace: Me too!
[Everyone laughs]
Q) How much of a hand in production does Hello Sister have?
Grace: We have a studio here actually in our house. We’re fortunate with that. A lot of the beginning stages of our music is us jamming in the studio and getting our ideas together. We do have some producers in Orlando that we’ve been in touch with a little bit. Recently, we’ve been with some producers in LA and Nashville is where we had a lot of our start.
Scarlett: But we like to be pretty hands on in the production process.
Gabriella: In the room.
Scarlett: We put all of our minds together. We definitely have a lot of ideas. We like to be able to speak about that.
Q) Is this a prelude to a full album or EP?
Gabriella: Yeah, so “The Gift” was kind of a single and then we are working on a project right now for the future.
Grace: We can’t say too much about it right now.
Scarlett: But we’re super excited about it.
Grace: New stuff in 2025!
Scarlett: But hopefully very soon. We’ll be announcing it all on our social media.
Q) Who would you all love to collaborate with on music in the future?
Grace: Oh my gosh! I would say that Avril would be pretty cool. We are seeing her in concert this summer!
Gabriella: Yeah, that’d be so cool!
Grace: Also, Olivia Rodrigo would be cool. I feel like she’s up our alley. That’d be really fun.
Scarlett: Yeah!
Gabriella: I feel like our vibe with our outfits too are kind of similar. We’ve got a lot of people saying that, too. So, I think she would be really cool to collab with.
Q) Will there be some upcoming live shows for fans to look forward to?
Grace: We have lots of college shows in the Fall. Every September we’re actually at the Oceanside Pier as a part of an event called Super Girl Surf Pro. So, we’re excited for that.
Scarlett: We also have some local shows in Orlando, and we always share all of the details on our Instagram, TikTok and all of that. Yeah, we’re excited.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and your music?
Gabriella: We would like to say a big thank you to everybody who follows us and supports us. We love you guys so much!
Scarlett: And stay tuned because we have exciting news coming out soon! Some cool things in the process!
