How I Met Your Father – Working Girls
By: Gladys Luna
Sophie (Hilary Duff) bursts into Ellen’s (Tien Tran) apartment looking all excited and screaming about a job opportunity that Goliath Market (which is the place where Ellen works) has posted where they are in need of an in-house photographer. Sophie is really happy as she will get the opportunity to work with her friend. At first Ellen is a little surprised that Sophie would want a 9 to 5 type of job, but the woman assures her that she can manage it well and even asks her friend to help her with a recommendation with her boss, something that Ellen commits to. Next, we see future Sophie (Kim Cattrall) saying that even though she loved the hassle of being a freelancer photographer back then that she needed to have a stable income and this seemed to be the answer to that. Even though Ellen told her friend that getting the job might not be easy, she is completely proven wrong by the time Sophie enters to the Pemberton’s screaming to the top of her lungs that she had gotten the job and thanks Ellen for all of her support – although her friend appears to be a bit uncomfortable for a flashing moment. When the time to go to the office comes for the newly couple of coworkers they do it as they excitedly dance through the streets of New York just like Ellen did when she first started there. Later that day Jesse (Christopher Lowell) enters the Pemberton’s and is surprised to see Val (Francia Raísa) in the company of a peculiar woman as she is reading her hand. He goes straight to Charlie (Tom Ainsley) to ask him about it and he confirms that the lady, who he refers to as Madame Deborah (Kim Yarbrough), was very convincing when she was reading his hand so he trusted her when she said that prosperity was just around the corner for him. He also mentions that he had always been curious about visiting a psychic but his parents never truly allowed him to until one day they did and he was able to attend every week to speak about his fears and anxieties. Jesse, who doesn’t not believe at all in sorcery or psychics, lets him know that the person he was seeing was actually a psychiatrist. A few minutes later Val joins them in the conversation and tells them about what Madame Deborah had predicted for her. However, Jesse remains skeptical by it and is challenged by Val to talk to Madame Deborah as she believes that the only reason he doesn’t want to do it is because he is afraid of the future. So, the man agrees to do it just to prove his friend wrong.
In the meantime, at the other side of the country, Sid (Suraj Sharma) makes a surprise visit to Hannah (Ashley Reyes) who is very excited to see him. He is really trying to stay true to his promise of considering to moving to L.A. and he is there to experience it firsthand. Sid wants to go out and get more familiar with the city, but his wife tells him that they are throwing a party for one of her colleagues. However, she agrees to cancel to spend the night with him. Unfortunately, he refuses and encourages her to go and let him go with her to get to know her colleagues. Right that moment another man named Eli (Langston Kerman) walks in and introduces himself to Sid. They share a brief chat with Hannah throwing a joke that Sid does not seem to understand quite well making him feel uncomfortable by it.
Jesse’s hand reading is finally done and Madame Deborah does not seem to be so happy with what she saw. She says that she has never seen such a doomed man. Jesse does not appear to be moved at all by what the woman said to him, but Val and Charlie are intrigued by it so he confesses that she has told him that he would die that same night. He then leaves the place saying that it was all just nonsense, but the two other friends look terrified by the news a lamp falls from the ceiling right where his friend was just standing a few seconds ago. They believe that maybe he is actually in real danger. Meanwhile, Sophie is walking around her new office and then goes to see her friend to tell her how excited she is to be working there. At that moment their boss Mark (Kevin Sifuentes) comes out of his office saying that he is happy that the two of them have managed to click quite fast ,but Sophie corrects him by saying that they were already friends and that she was the person that Ellen recommended. It is there when it is revealed that Ellen never spoke about her with her boss as she said she would, leaving Sophie a tad disappointed by it.
Later on Sid and Hannah arrive to her friends’ gatherin,g but the woman is not certain he should be there. He insists as he tries to mingle with the others but it’s not truly working. Back at Goliath’s offices Ellen confesses to Sophie that the reason she didn’t help her was because she just forgot since she has a lot of work at the moment. Then, their boss shows up again saying that given they are very good friends he will let them work on the campaign for a new huge client – something that gets them very excited. Still Sophie hasn’t forgiven her friend. Charlie and Val pay a visit to Jesse carrying his favorite meal, which he thanks them for at first but then he finds out their real intentions are that they still believe that his friend would die soon. They are just trying to give him the best night of his life. Jesse still believes that their concerns are ridiculous yet one of the swords hanging on his wall fall near him, changing his perspective dramatically.
Back to Sid and Hannah where the man is still struggling to fit in with the group of doctors. He is asked about his job and in an attempt to impress everyone he decides that instead of talking about what he does, he will just show them. Although, before he does, he slips and hurts himself which forces him to stay there and being supervised by Eli with whom is not very polite. Hannah has enough of this behavior so she questions him about it and he tells her that he is hurt to know that she spends more time with Eli than with him. Also at issue is the fact that she has a whole life there without him makes him feel bad, but much to his surprise Hannah confesses that even though she loves her life there he is the one she loves the most. That is why she has decided to move to New York with him. In the other hand, Sophie and Ellen are about to give a presentation about the new project they were assigned to but Sophie is still hurt by Ellen’s lack of support something that goes from bad to worse when Ellen says that the reason she didn’t help her was because she didn’t think she was ready for the job. Before Sophie could say anything else, a group of clients followed by their boss walk in the room. Even though everything starts just right, their unresolved discussion comes out to light ruining what they had planned. Mark calls Ellen to his office while Sophie waits outside. When she just can’t take it any longer she enters the office saying that what happened at the meeting was all her fault and that should be her he must fire. Mark tells her that he does not plan to get rid of Ellen since she is his best employee; however, he might consider firing Sophie given that she was not a good influence on her. At that moment Ellen stands up for her friend by trying to list all the reasons why Sophie should actually stay. Suddenly, Jesse enters the office in a haste to say goodbye to both of them leaving the pair very confused by it. Later that day all of the friends are at Jesse’s apartment waiting for the prophecy to be fulfilled but then midnight comes and nothing happens. Everybody leaves the place, but just when they close the door the man almost chokes with a peanut which makes him believe that maybe he is still in danger so he runs after his friends.
Next thing we see is future Sophie as she tells her son about how her and Ellen’s cabbage campaign went successfully live the next day and how they saw almost everyone in town eating or sharing a cabbage. Although her son does not believe her, she is convinced that is the way it happened.
