How to Get Away With Murder – I Love Her
By: Dustin Bradley
ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” was one big origin story last week. We got a glimpse of the beginning of Annalise and Bonnie. We also got a shocking reveal in the flash-forward that seriously left me mind blown. I Love Her was an episode to remember for sure. Let’s drive right in:
We begin with Bonnie (Liza Weil) running slow motion through the rain on her way to meet up with Dr. Isaac (Jimmy Smits) for an impromptu session because of the day’s events. She tells him that she found him so she could hurt Annalise (Viola Davis), whom she has dubbed “May” in her sessions seeing as how she is lying about her own identity. She begins to tell him the story of how she came to meet and study under Annalise.
The intense pairing began as advisories. Back in 2002, Annalise was on the defense team for a politician accused of rape and the star witness just happens to be our own Bonnie Winterbottom. She testifies to the fact that including her father and the defendant, nearly a dozen men have raped and abused her from an early age. One encounter resulted in a pregnancy by the age of fifteen that she promptly lost after birth, (according to her father). Do we have a mini Bonnie out there? And would this show dare to make it someone we know?
Annalise is having trouble with this case seeing as she sees so much of herself in young Bonnie. She regales her struggles to husband Sam (Tom Verica). This was before he became a sleaze. Sam tells her she should consider quitting, but Annalise is so ambitious that she stays on board – even when the lead defense goads her into cross-examining Bonnie by offering up a partner position and even though she is uncomfortable. Is that gonna stop Annalise? Of course not. She goes through with the cross-examination and destroys Bonnie on the stand, which causes Annalise to quit her job. She then gets a job at Middleton University and persuades Bonnie to join as student and become a lawyer. This leads to the series of events that ultimately takes us to where we are now.
Now, Annalise this week had progress on her class action suit. She got all her forty signatures and witnesses, only to have it undone by Bonnie in the end. Bonnie figured out Annalise’s plan of action and single handily undoes everything that Annalise worked for this week. And it’s only after Annalise confronts her about her false sense of who Annalise is and the reason she kept Bonnie around all these years. Sadly, this sends Bonnie into a tailspin that leads her to Dr. Isaac, who soon finds out that that “Julie” is Bonnie and “May” is Annalise. He freaks out strangely and is very angry. How did he get involved in the events of the flash-forward? That’s my main question right now.
Over in the land of the new Keating Five (yes I am including Oliver by now) we delved more into the “Antares” mystery, which sees Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Laurel (Karla Souza) continue their search for proof of Mr. Castillo’s misdeeds. Only now they rope in Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) to hack Tegan’s (Amirah Vann) files. Sadly, they don’t find much because the firewalls are in full force. They don’t leave without getting a picture of what they can and showing it to Laurel who discovers that a former co-worker received a “cease and desist” letter only a week before mysteriously dying.
Connor (Jack Falahee) this week made a turn for the better. He cleaned up the apartment and himself. Yet when Oliver ditches him to work alongside the girls, which gives Connor the urge to cheat. Lucky for us Coliver fans, instead of hooking up with a “Humor” random, he appears at Annalise’s door step and tells her that she really messed him up because he has so many images ingrained in his mind of all the bad things that they have done. Annalise tries to comfort him and the only thing that seems to work is her offering him a place to help out with the class action.
Asher (Matt McGorry) took up some Frank-like behavior and stalks Michaela after he figures out that she has been lying to him about her off-the-clock work with Laurel. Does he feel left out or is he upset because she is getting wrapped up in dangerous activity?
Frank (Charlie Weber) had two things to do this week: hooking up with Laurel again and taking the LSAT. The only important thing was that we find out that last season Laurel lied to Wes about cheating on him with Frank. After he questions Laurel about the paternity of her baby, she finally ends this whole “friends with benefits” thing. Lucky for me, I am so happy that this relationship is over again.
NOW FOR THAT FLASH FORWARD! It turns out the suspect in custody for the events of “The Night of the Missing Baby” is… ASHER! HOW DID HE GET INVOLVED AND WHAT DID HE DO?
Hopefully, we will get more info tonight on the new episode of ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” at 10/9c. Keep watching and keep tweeting with us.
