I Fight Fail – Cute Without the E
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Our sound is built of many things and is always changing, but lately we have been writing more ominous and darker vibes. We’ve written a lot of pop and anthemic sounding songs so we just wanted to bring out our other side.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Our biggest influences are Brand New, Angels and Airwaves, The Chainsmokers, and 30 Seconds to Mars. We love a lot of mainstream music as well so we try to incorporate some of those aspects to keep us relevant.
Q) We love your cover of “Cute Without the E.” What made you guys decide to revamp it? Talk about the process for deciding your take on the track.
A) Thank you so much! “Cute Without The E” and Taking Back Sunday have been such big influences for us, especially in our earlier years – the “emo” years. [laughs] We wanted to try and see if we could put a spin on it that people vibe with. When we were deciding to pick a cover, we went back and forth for a while deciding if we wanted to pick a Top 50 billboard song or something older. Sometimes you have to follow the trends, but also be original and unique when picking cover songs. Emo is coming back with a big swing and we thought what would be better than picking a staple mark emo song and giving it a 2019 twist.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) Honestly, it’s just overall a good song and it gives people nostalgia of their teenage years.
Q) For your own songs, what is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Our process when we write songs is usually pretty simple. The most important thing for us is good chords and a solid melody. Once we have those, we then add drums, synths/lead guitar and bass to fill it in. Sometimes the lyrics might be already written before the actual music and other times it comes after. Each song is different though.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) We have written 100% of our music. It’s more gratifying that way. When we go into the studio we work with our engineer/producer to get the right tones and such. He helps convey our ideas fully, which is great a lot of times you have guys that just hit record. But with him he pushes.
Q) What can fans expect from a live I Fight Fail performance?
A) When you come to a I Fight Fail performance you can always expect to be a part of the show somehow. We try to connect with our fans even while we are on stage. We don’t want to just be another band singing the whole time. We like to have fun with it. So, we might call people out. [laughs] Even if you haven’t heard our music before you’ll hear something you know. We’ve also put together a pretty cool light show that makes our music that much more emotional. We love music that makes you feel something so we try to do the same.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) Right now, we are getting ready to release a handful of singles, which will give you a taste of what’s to come in the future. We plan to release an EP as well around summer of next year.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) We personally have different favorite venues or cities, but Nashville and Miami are two of are favorites! It’s more of the people that make the difference in the cities. Sometimes you can go to a rural area and find the coolest people and end being life-long friends.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Wow, that’s a hard one. We have some many favorite musicians/bands, but it would be pretty cool to work with Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon. They managed to do something really cool with their music over the last couple years. And, also, Tom Delonge. He’s definitely been a huge inspiration for all of us.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) We’ve been listening to a lot of different music lately just trying to find new inspiration and things like that. Sleep Token has been a fairly new band we have be really jamming. Also, Bellevue Days, The Band Camino, The Dangerous Summer and The 1975.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Nowadays social media is more important than ever. It allows you to connect with fans all over the world. Before the internet and social media, it was just guerrilla marketing and hitting the streets. This is also something really important, but social media makes it even easier.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) There’s only one thing we can say to our fans THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! We literally cannot say it enough. When we get down and feel like giving up, we remember why we do this every time we step on the stage – YOU GUYS!!!
