IAMHILL – Pool Party
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would call it alt pop.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Frank Ocean, BANKS, Beyoncé, Tyler, the Creator
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Pool Party.”
A) I broke up with a guy who pretty quickly started posting about his new girl. I knew her really well and had seen her cheat on previous boyfriends. I thought it was funny how he was idolizing her. Nobody’s perfect.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think the beat is what brings people in. My buddy Giordan Postorino (@giordash) produced it. It’s an easy in when the beat feels right.
Q) What makes “Pool Party” the perfect Summer hit?
A) The energy and … the title!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) For this song, I toplined it (wrote over an existing beat). I usually produce and write in tandem so the production directly dictates the lyrical content. A lot of my writing lately is more rhythm based (as opposed to melody based).
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) In this one i had none, which is rare. I’m usually co-producing or independently producing.
Q) What can fans expect from a live IAMHILL performance?
A) A lot of noise. I have live drums and electric guitar in my live show so it’s really intense, grunge-inspired and loud.
Q) With your album Give It A Rest such a hit, will there be a new one or an EP coming in the near future?
Q) Yes, my EP will be out by the end of 2019.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) It all depends on the sound in the room. I loved playing in Austin, TX in general because there’s so much support in that city for live music!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Tyler, the Creator.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’m listening to a lot of grime/UK hip hop right now. It’s a departure from my normal go-to stuff, but I’ve needed a bit of a break from western electronic pop/trap/emo.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I love Instagram. I love direct communication because it helps humanize what I do and it’s so easy to reach out on the platform. The fourth wall comes down.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you, I appreciate you ❤️
