Ian Chen – Shazam! Fury of the Gods
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Where do we pick up with Eugene and the family in Shazam! Fury of the Gods?
A) In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, we pick up with Eugene and the Shazamily coming off from gaining their powers in the first edition — they’re working hard and as a team, but new challenges arise: including the three God sisters.
Q) How has everyone adjusted to having a superhero in the family?
A) Everyone’s adjusted to having a superhero — and being a superhero — in their own ways and that really reflects in the dynamic we see on the screen.
Q) How do you think Eugene has developed in his character since the first movie came out?
A) Eugene has developed immensely since the first movie came out. With these new superpowers and experiences on the “battlefield,” he’s developed a new sense of maturity that comes with such a responsibility. But more than anything, he’s still that guy who takes his love for video games and applies it to his superhero style.
Q) Going into this new film some incredible new costars were added! Were you hoping to share a scene with someone(s) in particular?
A) The sequel’s cast boasts some really incredible and accomplished actors. Out of them, I probably worked the most closely with Rachel Zegler, who plays Anthea, as the Shazamily shared the most scenes with her.
Q) What kind physical prep did you put in to be stunt and scene ready for the movie?
A) I wish I could say I worked out to gain fifty pounds more muscle and a half-a-foot of height, but that’s all Ross Butler’s job.
Q) What can you tease are some of your favorite moments or scene to shoot for Fury of the Gods?
A) There’s some amazing moments in Fury of the Gods but it’s got to be the scenes with some of the mythological creatures we shot with. Obviously, they’re not there and that’s the fun in it — acting alongside the other cast members and seeing how they react to a tennis ball connected to a stick, pretending it’s a monster.
Q) With such epic stunts and intense scenes, how did you shake off a long day of filming?
A) Probably with some good food and a long bath.
Q) What has it meant to you to be a part of such a popular and empowering franchise like Shazam!?
A) Working on Shazam! has been such an awarding experience and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many amazing fans of the movie, actors, crew, etc. Moreover, I hope I continue to get the opportunity to play entertaining and fun roles.
Q) What are the other recent projects that you have been busy working on?
A) Last year over the summer, I worked on a short film called Fishboy which follows the life of Patrick, whom I portray, and his development through the exploration of his sexuality and relationship with religion—it premiered at the London BFI Flare LGBTQ film festival shortly after Shazam! Fury of the Gods did!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you do on our screens?
A) First and foremost—thank you!!!! Keep an eye out for more, of course!
