Indi Star – Hurt a Little
By: Malasha Parker
Q) You’ve had a variety of songs come out over the last couple of years. How would you describe the progression of your music?
A) I definitely think my music is maturing and I am settling into my own voice and sound. I love each song that I have released because they were all right for me at the time but I for sure get excited each time I release a new song and I see my own progression!
Q) Describe the story behind “Hurt A Little” and the sound of it.
A) “Hurt A Little” is based on an ended relationship and feeling like the other person isn’t fazed by the breakup. It’s like you are being really upset and hurt and you want the other person to feel hurt as well because that means that the relationship actually meant as much to them as it meant to you.
Q) What is the concept for the “Hurt A Little” music video?
A) So excited for this video! I have released visualizers for my last few songs, but I am back to a full treatment video with a story line for this song. I don’t want to give too much away (I’m actually on set right now filming the video!) but the vibe is like a campy horror movie from the late nineties or Y2K time period.
Q) What challenges did you come across while preparing the new single, “Hurt A Little”?
A) I mean, there are usually challenges with release structure and timing. There is so much involved if you want to have a well-tuned release process. From submitting the song to distribution to getting promo photos and planning the video to time it so it is complete for the release. You have to be very organized with planning and time. To make it even crazier, for this release I am also in the middle of planning and getting ready for NYFW, so it has been a bit hectic for sure!
Q) “Hurt A Little ” has a more upbeat instrumental compared to your most recent releases. What made this the right choice for the song?
A) I really like the more upbeat tone. I think it really lends itself to the vibe of the song to capture the energy of those hurt and angry motions touched on in the song.
Q) Your voice is kind of hushed and monotoned as you describe how you want the other person to hurt and feel at least some of the pain. It’s as if you have come to terms with the breakup but have now moved to a more vengeful side. Was this tone of voice intentional?
A) There is definitely a tonal shift in this part of the song. It’s my favorite part. It is almost like there is a come to term moment and you might just see that vengeful side of me in the music video!
Q) Is there an EP or album in the works? If so, are you able to tease a possible release time?
A) Definitely an EP coming somewhat soon. I’m not sure if I will release one more single first or go right to the EP. It’s a bit of a transition time right now in my music as I have switched management, so we are in the middle of planning!
Q) You write your own music. Are there any other areas while preparing music that you would like to delve further into?
A) I absolutely love playing music as well. I’m a self-taught piano player (with some help along the way). I am also in the early stages of learning guitar. I love both the piano and guitar and will keep pursuing both along with singing.
Q) What kind of live performances have you been preparing to showcase your music to fans?
A) I did a few live performances this summer and I am always on the lookout for new opportunities. I’m building my song list set at the moment, and I do have another song to release and then an EP, so I will really focus on the performance once I have a set list I am happy with.
Q) You are sort of an all-arounder when it comes to the entertainment industry. How have you stayed motivated to keep everything balanced so that you don’t burn out?
A) Thank you so much! Yes, I love all aspects of the entertainment industry. It’s funny because I really just go with the flow. Acting is really dependent on booking roles and then if I book something for acting, that scheduling always takes center stage. I am always working on music and taking dance classes and creating content daily, but that is so much easier to schedule because that is more scheduled in my own time. I always try to get as much rest as I can as well when I have downtime and I do try to do normal things as well like hanging out with friends.
Q) Are there any new series or movies that we can look forward to seeing you in?
A) Unfortunately, with the SAG and writers’ strike, there isn’t much going on right now on the acting side. I am hoping the Union and the studios can come to an agreement and get everyone back to work! I am really missing the auditions. I actually really enjoy the audition process!!
Q) What would you like to say to your fans of you and your music?
A) First, I want to thank them for listening! I still have people writing to me about my first release, “Just Might Dance,” that came out years ago! I love that there are so many people following along on my journey! I really would just want to say “Thank You” and that I notice every kind comment and it really does mean a lot to me that people actually take time out of their days to reach out to me! I always try to take time and communicate back as much as I can!
Thank you so much Starry Constellation Magazine for this opportunity to introduce myself to new people! If anyone wants to follow along on my journey, you can find me on social media at the links below:
