Isac Elliot – What About Me
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What was it like for you to perform on the TODAY Show?
A) It was so cool! It’s making news in Scandinavia, where I’m from. It was so, so cool, but I was so nervous at the same time. I couldn’t feel my hands and it was unreal. Everything happening in the states is just so cool!
Q) Who are some of your musical inspirations?
A) At the moment, my favorite artist and one of the artists I listen to the most is Justin Timberlake. He really got me into pop music. I love his stuff and the way he performs. He’s just great!
Q) We’re hearing new music from you now. Talk about story behind your song “What About Me.”
A) It’s my story. If you listen to the song, you know what it is about. It’s about a relationship where the girl always has to be right. It’s my story and we wrote it a few weeks ago. I really liked it so we released it as a single.
Q) How involved are you with the lyrics and production of your music?
A) I am more of a melody guy because English isn’t my first language. But I tell them what I want to write about. The writers always help me with lyrics, but this new song “What About Me” is almost just my melodies. The producers always do their own rough version and then send it over to me and my team. So, if we have changes we just send them back. For this song, I wanted it to be super chill and vibey, but still not sad. I really liked the result.
Q) What kind of fan reaction have you gotten to “What About Me?”
A) This song, my fans love it which is always great. That’s always what I’m worried about, the fans not liking it. They just love it so I’m super happy!
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans are connecting to?
A) I feel like this song is one everyone can like. My sister is twelve years old and likes the song, I like the song, my grandma likes my song and people my dad’s age like the song. It’s a song everyone can listen to.
Q) Will there be an EP or album coming soon?
A) There is going to be an EP really soon and then an album later because we have so many songs. We have been looking for a song for a while so we’re going to release an EP really soon.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Justin Timberlake of course! I actually listen to hip-hop music a lot and pop music as well. I’m a big fan of hip-hop so a really cool rapper like Drake would be BIG! That’s the dream.
Q) Three years ago did you ever dream you would be this big?
A) No, definitely not. Not even my team! We spoke with them yesterday and they told me they didn’t know when they signed me I’d be this big or it’d go this well. When I started making music, my biggest dream was to maybe succeed as an artist in Finland, Scandinavia and Europe. So, everything else is a bonus right now! I’m just super happy and enjoying it all.
Q) What can your fans in the US expect from a live Isac Elliot show?
A) This mall tour we’re doing is obviously not with screens and stuff. I’m going to perform some songs and meet my American fans. I’ll perform acoustically so it will be fun.
Q) You are part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I feel like my fans love to know what is going on in my life. I’m super active on Snapchat and it sometimes annoys people because I Snapchat everything. [laughs] My fans love it though because through Snapchat and Twitter they can kind of get close to me. On Twitter, they can communicate with me. On Snapchat, they can see my everyday life. On Instagram, I put more professional photos. That’s super important because if I were a big fan of someone I would love to get to see into their life.
Q) What would you like to say to all of your Ellioteers?
A) I love you all and thanks for all the support. I wouldn’t be here now if it weren’t for you. It’s all thanks to my fans. Thank you very much for my fans for taking me this far.
