Interviews
J-Minu$ – Maybe We Got It All Wrong
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Alternative Hyperpop/indie rock/ bedroom pop feel.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Grew up listening to Michael Jackson, All American Rejects, Big Sean, Drake, Kanye, and a majority of early 2000s hits
Q) Where did the concept for your project Maybe We Got It All Wrong come from?
A) It’s just a mixture of my thoughts, moments I’ve been through, things other people have gone thru. It’s kinda like a reflection of perspectives TBH.
Q) What tracks off this challenged you the most to create?
A) All of them. Took me about eight months to come up with the imperfect lineup. A lot of sleepless nights and overthinking put into it.
Q) Which songs on Maybe We Got It All Wrong hold a special place in your heart and why?
A) Optimistic. I talk about my parents, which are very dear to me. IDK. It just hit home.
Q) What is your song writing process?
A) I have to be in a good mood. I listen to some beats that my producers send me, and the first thing that pops up in my head I just roll with TBH. I make sure it’s polished up at the very end of course, but honestly it’s just a lot of thinking and recording that’s about it.
Q) Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Yes, I need a beat that can get stuck in my head through the whole damn day…
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Mm, I really just tell my producers what ideas I have, and they come up with some fire stuff, which are all solid of course. I love the guys. They are very talented.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from checking out this new project?
A) I hope they can have a sense of recollection on their life in hopes of bettering themselves. Even though I know a lot of the songs may sound sad, I feel like it’s a way of me telling my listeners they aren’t alone. IDK you’d have to listen to know what I’m talking about.
Q) What has been some of the fan feedback you’ve already received to We Got It All Wrong and your new songs that has really stood out to you?
A) The amount of fans that add my album link to their stories on social media, letting me know how good it was to them – it’s just music to my ears. I don’t feel like there is just one or two songs in the album that just stand out because I feel like the album as a whole was just made to stand out.
Q) With concerts having been on hold, what do you miss most about being on stage?
A) I miss being able to interact with my crowd and fans. Good times TBH. More to come!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Hometown Corpus Christi, of course. I love my people!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Posty, Lauv, Jeremy Zucker, Brakence, Aries!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Mm, I usually just throw on an alternative Spotify playlist and just jam to all the new stuff TBH. No one in particular TBH.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) You get to show your fans your everyday life pretty much, so like it’s almost as if they are with you throughout the whole journey. I feel like it makes the connection between fans and artists closer!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Keep working hard in whatever you do, don’t ever give up and please keep love in the world. So much hate going on right now so let’s make a change!! For better days ahead, I love y’all!
