Jack Rose – Better on My Own
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say my sound is very pop/ R&B mixed with a little bit of rap.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I listen and like all types of music to be honest, but my influences are Bryson Tiller, Summer Walker, The Kid Laroi and Bruno Mars.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Better on My Own.”
A) It’s just a song that I wrote that is basically saying I don’t need anyone in my life to keep me happy whether it’s a friend, girlfriend or acquaintance. I just think I’m better on my own. The whole song is very contradictory because I’m talking about how I’m in the love with the girl in the first two verses and then I switch it up and start saying: “do you know what I’m better on my own.”
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think it’s a whole break up sort of thing because I have friends that say they can relate to the song because they’ve gotten out of relationships and they’re better alone now.
Q) How did Annie Lennox’s “No More I Love You’s” inspire the hook?
A) When my producer sent me the beat. I fell in love with it because of the sample it becomes recognizable and it makes people think they’ve heard the track before.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) In the video I’m never seen with anyone else but “my girlfriend,” who I eventually leave in the video. But I’m always in open spaces by myself and I think that it sort of shows that being on my own gives me more space and happiness.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I will normally find my inspiration from other songs or YouTube instrumentals. I will never write a song before hearing the music. I always jot down random lyrics that come to mind in my notes, but never whole songs.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) With this track being made during lockdown, SK produced the track live in Lancashire, which meant I didn’t have any input into the original mix, but I would also give my opinion if there were changes that I wanted made. But normally I will sit in the studio with my producer Kev and we will make the beat and song from scratch, which is really fun because trying to find unique sounds is so funny and enjoyable.
Q) You rose to fame with some great cover songs. How did you select the artists/songs you wanted to feature?
A) I just based it on my age demographic and the charts really. Nothing fancy, but it was fun doing songs I wouldn’t normally sing.
Q) What is a song or artist you may want to cover in the future?
A) I will be 100% honest with you – my main priority is trying to release my own original music and make songs people can vibe to, dance to, cry to and relate to. I will upload the odd cover onto my Instagram page every so often though. There will be covers, of course, but my main priority at this point in my career is trying to write and release music of my own.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) There are many! I loved performing at the Indigo O2 when I toured with the legendary Faith Evans just because you can have that feeling that your performing at the O2. It may not be the arena, but it’s a big deal. But to be honest, I love every venue I’ve performed at whether it’s fifty people or fifty thousand people, either or I’m still getting up on stage and doing what I love no matter what.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would love a feature from someone like Lil Baby or Don Tolliver because of the vibes they bring to their songs. Don’s smooth vibrato mixed with melodic rap-style vocals and Lil Baby just because every track he does is a vibe. “Drip Too Hard” and “For the Night” – an amazing artist. But more mainstream I’d probably say Stormzy or AJ Tracey because of the UK vibe which is looking to be very prominent in my music too come.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’m enjoying the song “Dangerous” by S-X at the moment. It just sounds so slick with the vocals. Also loving Pop Smoke’s posthumous album Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon.
Q) We love your series “Ghost Hunting with Jack Rose.” How did you get started hunting ghosts?
A) My mum and dad have always been into the paranormal and I always loved watching “Most Haunted” and shows like that from the age of five to six years old. We were all telling ghost stories and I said for a laugh we should do an investigation somewhere and the rest is history. We have good fun filming and have caught some great stuff. Looking forward to filming the next one whenever that might be.
Q) There have been some great celebrity guests. Who would you most love to join you on a ghost adventure?
A) KSI, just because I know he’d get scared and he’s funny too so he’ll make it an enjoyable experience.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think it is really important to connect with fans even more so now as we are not able to do live performances.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much for helping and keeping me going even through my bad times and thank you for coming to my shows, streaming my music, liking and retweeting my stuff. It honestly means so, so much to me. Thank you all for the support & love. xxx
