Jacqueline Loor – Show Them
By: Jamie Steinberg
Cinematic pop artist, Jacqueline Loor, has unveiled the video for the title track of her debut album, Show Them. With unfiltered emotion and relatable themes aimed at empowering people – especially those identifying as female – to take control of their destinies, Show Them was released in October 2021, after a string of singles (both in English and Spanish).
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is sometimes dark and cinematic but can also be bright and uplifting. However, in either instance, it’s always empowering.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Lana del Rey, Florence and the Machine, U2
Q) Talk about the story behind your song “I Can Fly.”
A) My identical twin sister struggled with some codependency issues. Perhaps it was because we are identical twins; we are so used to having someone always there. With that, she would sometimes settle for the wrong person just to have someone by her side. I wanted to empower my twin to know she could be happy on her own.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think many people can relate to what my twin has done, and I have done, which is settle for the wrong people because we are scared to be alone. This song, I think, brings hope to people to see that they can break away from what they are used to in order to get to a point where they are happier, even if it means being alone.
Q) How does the video for the track “Show Them” play into the message behind it?
A) I had my two girls not only sing on the chorus for the title track of the album “Show Them,” but they also acted in the music video along with their closest girlfriends. It is a female empowerment track and it felt like it was the perfect thing for me to do, which is implement everything I talk about to my girls. My biggest passions in life are my family and my music, so having these two worlds collide was a dream come true.
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) If I’m composing in my studio, I do usually write the music first before writing lyrics. However, I’ve been collaborating a ton with a bunch of producers who send me a track and as soon as I feel that bit of inspiration, I can write the lyrics and melody in minutes. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I receive these tracks!
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I never thought I could produce, but I’ve had some amazing female mentors push me towards producing. It is a male-dominated industry, for sure, and considering I’m all about female empowerment it just seems like the most obvious thing for me is to produce. I did release a song I self-produced called “I Broke My Heart” and I really didn’t expect it to do as well as it has. I feel I have put limits on myself that I really shouldn’t have, and it’s time I bring them down.
Q) What are some themes you focus on with your new album Show Them?
A) Female empowerment, individuality, shining your own light, getting back up after being broken down are all themes in my album.
Q) What tracks on the album challenged you the most to create?
A) “I Broke My Heart” was the most challenging because it was the only one I produced. It definitely took a lot more time and effort to get that one right, but I’m really proud of how it came out.
Q) What song on the album holds a special place in your heart and why?
A) “I Broke My Heart” is one I love because I produced it! LOL. I keep coming back to this one, I’m realizing. I also love “Coming Undone” – the first track on the album – because it’s the first song I wrote after making the conscious decision of pursuing music as a career while I was living in Tenerife, Spain. This song started my journey, and it was inspired by my identical twin, who is the muse for this entire album.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from checking out Show Them?
A) I hope listeners feel what I’m trying to say, and it can resonate with them one way or another. I hope they can cry, which I think is always necessary if one wants to heal.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform, and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I’m from Miami, FL and I loved playing at certain venues there with my band. It really felt like a dream come true playing at Churchill’s where I grew up watching some of my favorite local bands, including my brother’s band, The Butterclub! I also loved playing at Bar Nancy and Las Rosas!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) It would be a dream to collaborate with AG! She’s an amazing producer who is just a badass and is an inspiration! I would also love to collaborate with Milck because I adore her, and I love what she represents. I’m not about the fame, I’m about helping people, and I feel AG and Milck are about that too.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to, and why do you dig them?
A) I’m loving Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo because they are honest and authentic, and I can feel what they are saying in such a beautiful and tragic way. I’m also obsessed with Maneskin and love listening to it as I train for a half-marathon coming up next month!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I used to not like social media, but I came to love it! I think it’s necessary for me to post about what’s actually happening in my life so fans can be a part of it. I used to want to hide things like I’m a mom and I’m forty years old, but I’ve come to embrace it and realize my truth may help other women out there feel like they can pursue their dreams no matter what age they are and no matter how many kids they have. Sharon Van Etten helped me realize that! She’s amazing!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would love to thank you for taking the time to ask me these questions so people can have a better understanding of me. Also, I would like to thank everyone for following and listening to my music. It really does mean so much to me. I am not chasing fame or money; I just want to make music that can help people shine their light at the end of the day.
