Jacquie Lee – Broken Ones

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would describe it as really raw and emotional and soulful.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Definitely I would say Adele, Amy Winehouse and Sam Smith, but also The Eagles and Janis Joplin.

Q) You’re a singer and songwriter, but how much of a hand did you have in the production of your new album “Broken Ones?”

A) Production wise I made decisions based on what I knew how to control, but it’s pretty cool that since my first EP I’m working on a record and trying to learn the process. I’m learning more and more about the different programs they use. It’s been pretty cool! I definitely loved getting involved.

Q) What is the feel and vibe for the album?

A) Looking back on it, all the songs have a pretty sad name, but they are not sad at all. “Broken Ones” has a positive message and “Tears Fall” is an upbeat song. “Drown Me In Your Love” has a cool beat. They might seem sad on the outside from just hearing the titles, but when you actually listen to the songs they are pretty uplifting.

Q) What are your favorite songs?

A) My favorite one right now is “Drown Me In Your Love.” Just the way it came together was in my room at night on my little keyboard. It is most memorable for me because of the process of creating it. It was really fun because the original version of the song versus it being produced and adding the music in. It’s kind of got electronic music in there. It was cool watching it transform.

Q) What is your songwriting process like? Do you need the lyrics before the music?

A) I literally drive myself crazy! For this upcoming record, I just have been keeping a notebook by my side and glued to me. In case inspiration strikes I’m prepared with a pen or pencil. I just write everything down and then when I have lyrics, some inspiration or even a word then I get to the keyboard and start just going at it.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Jacquie Lee performance?

A) I think live performances can either be a really good thing if you look up to the artist or a really bad thing. Obviously, you don’t want to be disappointed. For my fans, I think they would get so much more out of the music because there is something special about going to a live performance and feeling the music and being in the same room watching it in real life. Everyone remembers a really good concert.

Q) How can fans get involved in promoting your music?

A) Definitely social media is huge these days. Twitter, Instagram, Vine or Facebook – whatever you have! Just word of mouth and spreading it through your friends. I know my dad just got Facebook so he has been going crazy with that.

Q) Speaking of social media, why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) For me, it is weird because my whole age group grew up on Twitter and Instagram. For us, it’s the norm. All of my friends are on Twitter and some people just use it for the bare minimum updates on what they are doing. I had to sort of segue my personal Twitter account into a professional Twitter account while still being myself at the same time. I think it is just another outlet where people can get to know who you are, as a human, other than someone famous with a lot of followers. It makes you more real.

Q) A lot of fans remember you from your time on “The Voice” where you were on Christina Aguilera’s team. How did she influence you as a musician and your time on the show enhance you as a performer?

A) Christina is a smart business woman because she does it all. She started out in the industry as a young girl (like me) so she had a lot of business advice for me and after the show she said something simple, “Just write everything down.” I remember hearing it and being like, “Yeah, okay.” It just has so many different layers to me as I am moving forward and going forward in my career. It’s just not as simple as it sounds. It honestly helps so much more than you think. The show was like a bootcamp and it prepared me for stressful situations, crunch time, being on a huge stage, forgetting lyrics and when the stakes are high. It was really good training for me.

A) I would say my social media and on YouTube. My EP is definitely where you can learn a lot about me through my music. I have a website too at http://www.jacquielee.com and I am fully on social media.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A) Thank you and I love you for supporting me. Obviously, I can’t be anywhere I am now without them. I’m going to be working really hard and get some new material out there. I hope you are excited for my new single and album coming out! “Tears Fall” is on the EP and it will be the next single coming out next year. Keep an eye open!
