Interviews
Jade Patteri – Invisible
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would say my sound is a mix between Sarah McLachlan and Alessia Cara.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) AJR, Jessie J and Maroon 5 are a few of my all-time favorites.
Q) Talk about the story behind your song “Invisible.”
A) “Invisible” came from a place of growth in one of my past relationships and it ended up really impacting the writing and content of the tracks that came after. I wrote “Invisible” to touch on the idea of letting go of toxicity and focusing on how to move on, how to grow, how to heal and learn from the past and to not dwell in it forever. That song really was the start of my music career and laid a solid foundation for the music that has followed. “Invisible” was the most personal and vulnerable I had been with anyone at the time and, as a young artist, hearing how the lyrics had inspired and impacted so many people on the same personal level made me strive to create more music that resonated just as deeply.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think the overall message of “Invisible” is pretty relatable. Regardless of the situation, I feel like everyone at some point has gone through feeling stuck and the whole theme of the song is about detaching from that toxic environment, person or feeling and finally feeling free to open your eyes to the light at the end of the tunnel.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video for “Invisible” was a perfect visual representation of the lyrics. It took place at the beach and in a dark rain room which represented the fight to escape from your own mental prison and choose to heal, move forward and have hope for something better.
Q) During the pandemic, what makes “Invisible” so relevant?
A) This song could not be more relevant to the pandemic because in a time of so much fear, uncertainty and sadness there is so much to be hopeful for and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how hard life gets.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My music is written usually first at my piano. For me, I have written before and after having music so I’ve written songs in both ways. It honestly just depends on how I’m feeling and how fast the message of the song is able to become clear to me lyrically.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I write all of my music on my piano and I co-produce!
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes, actually… I have a new EP called All the Love Songs I Never Wrote coming soon, so stay tuned!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Honestly, any stage I have a chance to perform on. For me it’s about the people in the audience. As long as I know I have people who are there to love and support me as an artist I will perform anywhere and be just as happy!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would absolutely love to collaborate with Alessia Cara or AJR. Both of these artists have done an amazing job at not only inspiring this generation, but will no doubt leave a mark on future generations as well. The example of authenticity to themselves, without compromise to the industry’s temptations and expectations, is what moves me to be true to my lyrics and to myself. It is so easy to ask myself, “What is popular now?” or what would get me the most likes?” I pray I never fall into that trap, but rather “what story do I need to tell?” or “Who can I help to heal or feel something that might challenge their pain, bias or status quo?”
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) By far “Neotheater” by AJR. I think that entire album is a masterpiece and every time I hear their music it inspires me to keep writing and to never stop trying to become an inspiration and stay true to myself and my values!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is a great way to get to know fans on a personal level and get to see and hear why they love my music! I always love receiving fan messages because it just reminds me that someone cares about me, and my music and it just inspires me even more to keep making art!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much. I would not be here without you all and always remember to do what you love to do and to never give up!
