Interviews
Jake Johnson – New Girl
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you have been working on?
A) The movie I shot last summer TAG is coming out this summer. It was a lot of fun to work on with a great cast. I thought the premise was ridiculous, but when i heard it was based off a true story I thought it was worth making.
Q) What is new this season on “New Girl” and with Nick?
A) Nick is rich and successful now. They decided to Nick dresses more fashionable too. There’s also a kid and a dog in Season 7, so big changes.
Q) What has continued to challenge you about portraying this character?
A) To keep trying to make my cast mates laughs. At a certain point it felt like the goal became to make the others laugh and after so many takes/hours that became harder and harder.
Q) Jess, Nick, CeCe, Schmidt and Winston are pretty inseparable on screen. Is it like that way for all of you off screen as well?
A) Not really. We all really like and respect each other. But we all live very different personal lives and don’t get to see each other too often.
Q) What do you think it is about Jess and Nick that continues to draw them back together?
A) I think they have good chemistry with each other. Good chemistry is hard to get away from.
Q) What has been your favorite part about Nick’s evolution and growth throughout the series?
A) My favorite part was when he wasn’t evolving. I like Nick dumb and weird.
Q) You have such great comedic timing. Is that something that has always been a natural ability for you or have you had to work at it?
A) Thank you. I did the comedic actor route with improv classes at UCB and Improv Olympic, as well as years of performing in a sketch group called The Midwesterners. So, I think that really helped.
Q) Who would you have been a dream guest star to have seen at some point on the show?
A) I was pretty thrilled with Dennis Farina.
Q) What have been some of your most memorable moments from filming throughout the years?
A) So many laughs with the cast. As well as so many hours playing Madden with Max [Greenfield] in my trailer while waiting to shoot.
Q) Was there any particular items you took from set as momentos from your time working on the series?
A) The gorilla drawing from Nick’s room is now in my office.
Q) What have you taken away, personally, from your time working on “New Girl?”
A) I learned a lot about acting and being on set. I also formed a lot of friendships that I hope I have for the rest of my life.
Q) What do you think it is about “New Girl” that made it such a fan favorite show?
A) I don’t know, but I am deeply thankful that people cared so much about it.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the work you’ve done on through the run of “New Girl?”
A) Thank you for watching, tweeting and sticking with us for the last seven years. Without you wanting it to continue, we would’ve never been able to do all the episodes we did. I hope you’re willing to stick with me as I continue my career.
