Jane The Virgin – Chapter Fifty
By: Emily Cross
Jane (Gina Rodriguez) grew up loved, but she had one big wish- to have a sister. Having Catalina (Sofia Pernas) visit felt like that wish finally came true. Catalina tells Jane that she had an unscheduled layover in Miami so she just had to come visit. Catalina also tells Jane that Cecilia knows that she and Jane reconnected and wants to reconnect with Alba (Ivonne Coll). Jane invites Catalina to stay with her and they spend all night getting to know each other. Catalina has lived all over the world and tells Jane stories about her travels and what she knows about Cecilia and Alba’s childhood. Michael (Brett Dier) thinks it’s a little weird that she’s staying with them, but Jane thinks it’s just because he’s used to how organized Jane is and Catalina is so spontaneous. Ignoring Michael’s misgivings, Jane invites Catalina to stay for a few more days.
In a phone call, Jane tells Alba about Catalina coming to stay but makes it clear Alba does not have to be involved. After the phone call, Jane has a meeting with Professor Donaldson (Melanie Mayron) about her TA job. After the antics of last year, she is unable to get the job back, but Professor Donaldson has recommended Jane for a position as an assistant with a publisher of a historical romance novels that Jane loves.
As you’ll recall, Petra (Yael Grobglas) was back from the dead and on a rampage. She informs Rafael he must move out of his penthouse. Rafael (Justin Baldoni) wonders why she is doing this, but Petra makes it clear that she is still angry that he never realized Anezka was impersonating her – even after sleeping with her.
Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) refuses an offer from Rogelio (Jaime Camil) for a loan for her dance studio because he is too opinionated and will be too involved in the process. In addition, it is revealed that Rogelio is off carbs in his preparation for his nude scene. As part of Rogelio’s deal with the studio, he agrees to include a product integration in “Tiago,” which is causing story problems.
Scott (Wes Armstrong) tries to get Petra back, thinking that if she rethought leaving maybe she would rethink their relationship. Petra refuses, citing her sister’s health crisis as reason for her lapse in judgment.
Jane fills Catalina and Michael about the possible job while they move into the new apartment. Catalina encourages Jane to not prep so much for the interview, but to lead with confidence. Jane does and the interview is going well until the publisher (Kelly Rutherford) asks her for help with a program Jane doesn’t know. Jane manages to delete a whole file that was two hours worth of work. Jane fills Michael and Catalina in on the interview fail. Catalina encourages her to keep pushing with Alice (Kara Wang), the current assistant, while Michael thinks she should give up. On the phone, Jane tells Xo that Alice is willing to try to help her get the job.
Jane and Michael talk about maybe wanting to travel after she’s finished grad school, but it’s not practical with Mateo and Michael’s job. Alba tells Xo she might meet Catalina because she is feeling distant from Jane and she doesn’t like it.
At the Marbella, Petra is served by a perky young woman. It turns out that Scott is suing her for sexual harassment, saying that she has created a hostile work environment and he doesn’t feel safe around her.
Rogelio shows Xo a studio that is twice her budget, but he negotiated the rent down to half price. In a flashback, it’s revealed that young Xo and Rogelio were on their high school’s dance team together and frequently clashed heads that would lead to dance offs. It turns out that the studio was too good to be true. Bruce (Ricardo Chavira), who is Xo’s ex who was married and didn’t tell her, works in a law office next door.
Catalina convinces Jane to go out for one drink after work, even though Michael and Mateo are waiting for them at home. Rafael and Catalina meet and sparks fly (literally), so Rafael joins them for a drink. Jane feels like she has to stick around and three drinks later, she’s getting annoyed at the flirting. Jane points out that she wants to get home for the first dinner at the new place and Rafael convinces Catalina to stay because she would be third-wheeling Jane and Michael.
At dinner, Jane keeps talking about how she thinks it’s weird that Catalina and Rafael hit it off. Michael disagrees, saying Catalina is just Rafael’s type. He also thinks Jane is being jealous. The next morning, Jane tells Catalina she’s fine with her dating Rafael, even though she’s clearly not.
Petra approaches Rafael for help with Scott, in exchange for the penthouse. He wants his shares back instead, but she refuses.
Jane drops Mateo off to Rafael and he gushes about Catalina. Jane lies and says Catalina didn’t mention anything. When Rafael pushes her, she tells Rafael she’d rather he didn’t date Catalina.
Rogelio and Xo are painting the studio and Rogelio complains about how much work it is. Xo is distracted when Bruce walks by, so Rogelio challenges her to a dance off. During the dance off, Rogelio pulls a muscle and Xo wins. They laugh about it and Rogelio confesses he signed up for the high school dance troupe to meet Xo. Xo admits seeing Bruce around throws her because she never got a chance to tell him off after what he did to her.
Rafael is mad that Jane asked him not to date Catalina and tells Michael. Michael doesn’t understand and Jane gets mad. Rafael leaves in a huff. Michael thinks it’s about Jane’s romantic history with Rafael, but Jane doesn’t want to be stuck in the middle if their relationship doesn’t work out. Jane tells Michael he’s sensitive about Rafael.
Xo confronts Bruce at his law office. She tells him that she’s renting a space nearby and wants to clear the air. Bruce reveals he’s gotten divorced since they last saw each other, but Xo still manages to tell him he was a douchebag.
Petra offers Scott an out-of-court settlement, but he’s not interested in the money. He has a lot of information about her and threatens to use it against her.
Xo tells Rogelio about confronting Bruce and confesses that she loves the friendship, but Rogelio seems upset. Rogelio still has a problem with the “Tiago” script, a clear metaphor for his relationship with Xo.
Catalina is going to Alba’s house for dinner with the family and Alba is nervous to meet her. At first, things seem rocky when Catalina and Alba made the same family recipe, but they hit it off anyways. However, things turn south when Catalina says that Alba stole Mateo from Cecilia, which Alba says is not true. She gets upset and storms off.
Rogelio texts Jane to ask her to help him with his “Tiago” script at The Marbella, but she declines. While at the Marbella, Rogelio runs into Rafael and they get to talking. Rafael asks Rogelio if it’s weird for him to date Catalina, but Rogelio is too wrapped up in his own drama to help. He ends up admitting that he’s still in love with Xo. He goes to the dance studio to profess his love and sees her kissing Bruce. Through this, he finds the answer to the Tiago story problem.
While at the precinct for his physical, Michael asks a fellow policeman if anything is new in the Mutter case. It seems the words do correspond to a bank account, but they don’t know who owns it yet.
Jane apologizes to Michael and gets a text from Alice inviting to a happy hour with the other assistants. Michael insists that they go because he won’t be the stick in the mud that stops Jane from getting what she wants.
Petra agrees to give Rafael’s shares back if he lies about Scott for her. Rafael counters with the proposition that this makes them even and from now on they will be equal partners. Petra agrees to his demand so Rafael threatens Scott into silence.
Michael still won’t move on from the Catalina problem because he wants Jane to admit she’s jealous. Jane does admit she’s jealous, but of Catalina because her life seems so adventurous compared to Jane’s. That’s exactly what Michael was afraid of: he feels like Jane thinks he and their marriage are boring. He leaves, just when Alice finds Jane. Michael gets up on stage and sings Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” to prove to Jane he isn’t boring. Jane and Michael leave the bar feeling great when Jane gets a text that the other assistants loved her. Not wanting to end the night, they continue the evening on a high note by spontaneously adopt a cat! They name her Faith M. Whiskers III. At home, Jane encourages Catalina to go out with Rafael.
Scott visits Rafael in his penthouse. It is revealed that the two men were working together. Rafael told Scott about the twin switching and Scott went along with it. Rafael gives him a bonus, but for Scott it wasn’t about the money. Now, Rafael owes Scott.
Rogelio does the scene with the product placement. He tells the cereal rep about his revelation, that letting Xo go was furthering from his mission to have more children. Later on, he tells Jane and Xo about “Tiago.” Xo tells Jane she hasn’t seen Bruce since she told him off, which Rogelio knows is a lie.
Alba and Jane talk. Alba apologizes for her explosion at dinner with Catalina and she didn’t know her sister liked Mateo. They agree to end the fighting because they both feel distant, but Alba warns Jane not to trust Catalina.
Catalina and Rafael hook up and enjoy a cocktail after sex. He remarks that she’s going to be trouble and she replies that he’s going to have to wait and see.
