Jane The Virgin – Chapter Fifty-Nine
By: Emily Cross
Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has been in love with three men in her life: the first remains a mystery, the second was Michael (Brett Dier) and the third was Rafael (Justin Baldoni).
In the present, Jane finally feels open. Or open to being open. Alba (Ivonne Coll) is excited and declares that love is in the air. She thinks she sees Jorge’s (Alfonso DiLuca) outline in the burn marks on her toast. Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), not so much. She’s still bumming after breaking up with Bruce (Ricardo Chavira). However, that doesn’t affect Alba and Jane’s moods, nor does Mateo’s (Joseph Sanders) whining about a missing raincoat he wants for show-and-tell. Jane promises to find it and drop it off later. Jane is one hot mama and the world is noticing. She’s not hating it, either!
Love is in the air, or at least it was last night in the case of Rafael and Petra (Yael Grobglas). They both agree it was a one-time thing and there’s no need to tell anyone, especially Jane. Of course, as soon as Petra goes into the living room to fetch her clothes Jane walks in with coffee. Petra manages to hide in the closet, but that’s exactly where Jane is heading to find Mateo’s raincoat. Of course, she finds Petra (still naked) and the whole thing is incredibly awkward. Jane and Rafael agree to never talk about it again.
Petra (now dressed) goes back to her office, only to find Dennis (Christopher Allen) and his partner Dana (Sheila Carrasco) waiting for her. They’re there to offer Petra a deal: Chuck (Johnny Messner) told them that she moved Scott’s bones and they won’t charge her for tampering evidence if she helps them find Anezka. Apparently, someone remembered hearing Scott and Anezka in a screaming match the night he disappeared. The detectives won’t give Petra any more information, and just tell her to get in touch with Anezka.
When Jane drops off Mateo’s raincoat with Alex (Deniz Akdeniz), he compliments her on her dress. Later, at the Marbella (and changed into her uniform dress), Jane tells Alba that she thinks he was flirting with her. In response, Alba conspicuously flirts with Jorge. She admits that she’s never been anywhere except Florida and Venezuela and he promises to show her the world. Once Jane has her focused again, Alba says that it’s inappropriate for Alex to be flirting with her because his attention should be on Mateo.
At lunch at home, Alba makes Jane promise to shut Alex down before anything starts. Xo is despondent and doesn’t participate in conversation at all. Jane asks Xo if she’s okay and Xo responds that she just feels bad for hurting Bruce. Jane assures her that it was a good decision in the long run. Rogelio (Jaime Camil) arrives and Xo asks Jane and Alba not to say anything to him about Bruce and the breakup until the court case is over. Rogelio tells that family that he loves Bruce because he got the reality show to settle, they just have to agree on a number. He also announces that he got the offer for his new telenovela and invites the family (including Bruce) to the first day of shooting.
Speaking of the telenovela, it is apparently loosely based on Gulliver’s Travels and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, where Rogelio is shrunk down to an inch tall. He is on set filming a special effects test for the network executive (Gloria Calderon Kellett). She asks him if he’s sure that his suit will be settled before shooting and he is “100% sure,” which means it’s definitely not going to be. He texts Bruce just to be sure, but gets no response.
When Jane picks Mateo up from school, he and Alex show Jane a drawing based on a story they read. Jane’s flirting radar goes off when she finds Alex standing close to her: he put his hand on her arm, has an eager smile and is maintaining strong eye contact. Flirting confirmed! She makes sure that he knows that their relationship is strictly professional and nothing is going to happen. He seems confused and Jane quickly realizes that he wasn’t flirting with her. He confirms that he isn’t into her, at all, and the whole situation is awkward. Making it even more awkward? Rafael is parked right behind her, picking up the twins (Mia and Ella Allan).
Jane walks over and asks how much Rafael saw (all of it) and of course he teases her. Apparently, Jane’s radar is a little off. Rafael insists that they go out that night so he can help Jane get her flirt on. As much as Jane insists, we all know she will end up going.
Rogelio is getting fitted for a costume, and snaps at the costumer because he is stressed about the lawsuit. He sends more texts to Bruce after the executive tell him about a love story she wants in the telenovela, but still gets no response.
That night, Jane and Rafael meet at the lounge, and Jane protests the whole time. He encourages her to relax, but it turns out he’s the one who needs to relax after Petra walks in. He tells Jane that he got a weird (flirty) vibe from her earlier and Jane thinks it’s obvious that Petra has feelings for him. They stop talking about Petra when she joins them. When Petra learns about their mission, she suggests they go over to the Fairwick, because that is where the single guys hang out.
Unfortunately, Petra insists on joining them at the Fairwick and makes everything awkward. Rafael keeps suggesting guys that Jane shoots down and Petra gets annoyed. She tells them that no one is approaching Jane because it looks like she is with Rafael. She then forces Rafael to cozy up to her so it looks like Jane is the third wheel. Jane spots someone she likes and Petra coaches her in reeling him in. Once Jane leaves to approach the guy, Petra continues to be flirty with Raf so he tries to let her down easy. She denies actually flirting with him, citing that she’s trying to make Chuck jealous (he’s across the room). Rafael agrees to play along. Meanwhile, Jane is actually doing really well flirting with the guy. She mentions that her husband died, and things get awkward.
Back at the table, Petra encourages Rafael to turn on the charm because Chuck is watching. He turns on the charm alright and it looks like he is flirting for real while it is just a game for Petra. She launches on a tirade questioning why she ever dated Chuck, which is unfortunate because Chuck is right behind her.
When she gets home, Jane tells Alba how awkward it was. Alba encourages her to be patient; it may take some time. Alba is adorably smitten over Jorge, and it’s getting kind of old. However, Alba is also annoyed that they still haven’t gone on a date, and it hasn’t even been mentioned. Jane encourages her to talk to Jorge. So, the next day, Alba does! She insists that they make a plan and Jorge tells her that he can’t decide where to take her because he want it to be special.
Rogelio visits Xo and Jane at home and asks Xo if he did something to offend Bruce. Xo tries to play it off, but Rogelio insists that she ask him what’s going on.
Jane is back at the gym with Dennis and she spills about her awkward date. She thinks dating is so much easier when you know the person and Dennis agrees, admitting that he and his fiance broke up a few months earlier because she cheated. This creates some flirty tension and it seems like they might date.
Later, Jane tells Rafael about this flirty vibe and asks him to go boxing with them next week. She needs a second opinion on whether or not Dennis is flirting after the whole Alex thing and Rafael is perfect. Rafael refuses and tells Jane she should just text Dennis. She does, with his help, and Dennis asks her out! She agrees right away and seems pretty proud of herself.
Xo isn’t in the same happy mood that Jane is. She’s at what was formerly her and Bruce’s house (now just Bruce’s) getting her things. She tells him that if it’s too hard to represent Rogelio, he can back out, but he assures her that he’s fine. However, when she brings up the fact that he hasn’t been responding to Rogelio’s texts he gets a bit upset. He tells her that he is treating Rogelio like any other client, even if that means not coddling him.
Petra confides in her assistant, Krishna (Shelly Bhalla), about the Chuck. She confesses that although she doesn’t want to, she likes him. She basically talks herself into apologizing.
Jane talks to Xo about the possibility of dating Dennis, convinced it was a mistake. She feels like it is a betrayal of Michael, but Xo tries to make her see that Michael would want Jane to be happy. Jane isn’t convinced because she doesn’t even know if she has feelings for Dennis. But it’s one date, so what’s the harm?
At the courthouse, Bruce can’t take it when he sees Xo and Rogelio together. It hurts too much so he resigns as Rogelio’s lawyer, effective immediately. The judge is willing to grant Rogelio a week to find a new attorney, but his new telenovela starts work the next day so that won’t work for him. He implores Xo to get Bruce back, but she confesses about the breakup and the reason: that she was in love with Rogelio. He admits that he loves her too and they kiss right in the middle of the meeting.
Meanwhile, Alba is on her date with Jorge, who takes her to mini-golf (because he overheard her gushing about it on the phone with Jane). It’s not as romantic as she was expecting, but it’s a cute gesture. However, it gets weird when she spots Jane and Dennis on their date! They hide and we get a peek into how Jane and Dennis are doing. It’s a little awkward at first, but they’re comfortable enough with each other that they’re having a good time. When Dennis brings up Michael, Jane asks him to not talk about her dead husband because that might make things uncomfortable. Things kind of take a dive from there because they can’t find topics that aren’t off limits (Michael, Dennis’ work, Dennis’ ex-fiance…)
Back with Alba and Jorge, they’re still hiding and Jorge surprises Alba by kissing her! She doesn’t hate it and goes in for more when they are found by one of the mini-golf employees!
At the Fairwick, Petra visits Chuck to apologize for what she said because she wants to be a good neighbor. He doesn’t believe that is why she apologized and doesn’t accept. Petra relents and admits that she likes him and wants to be with him, but he still doesn’t accept her apology, telling her how uptight and judgmental she is. To prove him wrong, Petra decides to ride the mechanical bull. She’s not as successful as she hopes and falls off after five seconds, losing one of her front teeth!
Back at the mini-golf course, Jane and Dennis’ date is back on course (pun intended!). Dennis shows Jane (very intimately) the proper mini-golf stance. He goes in for a kiss, but Jane freaks out and runs away, claiming a “bathroom emergency.” Cringe!
In the bathroom, Jane calls Rafael for help. She tells him all the conflicting emotions clouding her head and he encourages her to tell Dennis the same thing. So, she does and Dennis wonders why she was sending him all of those signals. What signals? It turns out everyone was a little mixed up so it’s all okay. They’re both a little uncomfortable with the whole dating-new-people thing so it’s cute that they’re on the same page.
Jane is home when Xo and Rogelio get home and she tells them that Dennis decided to give his fiance another chance. They tell her that the lawsuit was settled, for an astronomical number, but it doesn’t matter because they’re together! It’s about time!
At the Marbella, Rafael makes a dentist appointment for Petra. She can’t believe she made such a fool of herself and lost a tooth, but Rafael thinks she looks cute. A knock at the door ruins a cute moment between them and it’s Chuck (of course). He tells Petra that she shouldn’t be embarrassed and it was the sexiest thing anyone has ever done for him. They kiss and Rafael looks disappointed.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Dennis sees that Petra made contact with Anezka, telling her that she won’t be in contact for a while as Anezka needs to go dark and Petra will put money in her account. So, Petra has been talking to Anezka this whole time and has been paying her! Now, Dennis and Dana know that Petra is covering up for something and they’re betting that it’s that Anezka murdered Scott.
On the set of Rogelio’s telenovela, Jane tells Xo that she wishes she could date with her brain turned off. The tables now turned when Xo tells Jane that she’s going to meet someone eventually. Then, Alba walks in wearing the same clothes as the day before! Abuela is doing a walk of shame! Xo and Jane are disappointed when Alba tells them there was no sex, but are shocked when she said that she wanted to!
Before the telenovela starts shooting, the executive introduces Rogelio to his costar, Fabian (Francisco San Martin), a young very hot actor who happens to have no shirt. Rogelio isn’t excited, but Jane sure is!
