Interviews
JD McCrary – Little
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) Currently, I’m finishing up my first EP that will be released in April. Follow me on Instagram @jdmccrary for all the fun details and make sure to take a listen.
Q) What was your audition like for the film Little?
A) I actually read for the part and got a callback and went in and read with Marsai [Martin], which was fun but she was so cool that it made it easier for me.
Q) How was your character Isaac originally described to you?
A) It was pretty general. He was one of the outcasts in their school that has a stutter.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the movie?
A) Just reading the script and knowing that we would we be dealing with a real-life situation in middle school which I am in seemed very relatable.
Q) Talk about working alongside Marsai Martin.
A) Well, working with Marsai first I would say was super fun. She’s so talented so it could be intimidating, but she was so down to earth and naturally funny and full of energy. But a true professional at such a young age.
Q) What were some of your favorite behind the scenes moments from filming the movie?
A) Some fun behind the scenes stuff was on break or lunch we would all play UNO or heads up and go to each other’s trailers and play games so it was like a party with friends every day. Oh, and the dancing, lots of dancing.
Q) What did you personally take away from working on this project?
A) Seeing Marsai head her own film inspired me. It lets me know that no matter what age you are your goals are attainable. And to always stand up for what you believe is right.
Q) We’ll also be hearing you in the upcoming film The Lion King. What does it mean to you to voice young Simba?
A) It’s a blessing. It still feels unreal that I’m really going to be “Simba” and in an iconic film with such an amazing director and huge cast. To be a part of that is so exciting.
Q) You recently released your first single. Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song?
A) Yes, I did. I would LOVE to collaborate with Beyoncé, Chris Brown, J. Cole and Logic. Let’s make this happen ya’ll. [laughs]
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the fan feedback you’ll receive to the movie Little?
A) Yes, I am. And I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks of me in the role of Isaac and send me feedback. I’m anxious to hear and how they love the whole movie as well. Just be prepared to laugh, laugh, laugh.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of your work?
A) I would just love to thank everyone who supports me. I always comment and reply, so stop by and say hi. And to any kid with a dream, go after it wholeheartedly. We are the future and we together can make it amazing!!!
