Interviews
Jennifer Alvarado – Trigger Warning
By: Sammi Turano
Q) What made you decide to write/ release “Trigger Warning?”
A) I wrote “Trigger Warning” as a way of processing my feelings toward someone in my life. They seemed to bring out every negative emotion in me and while I cared deeply for them, I had to make the decision to no longer have them in my life. I actually never planned to release TW as a single, but as it came together, it just felt like the right song to release at this point in my career. This song is very much about letting go of the past and I wanted this to mark a new chapter in my career.
Q) The song has such a powerful message/meaning. In what ways do you think it will help others in similar situations?
A) My hope is that others can sense the chaos behind the words. When you are in negative relationships or situations…especially where there is gaslighting involved…you start to think you are crazy. I want others to hopefully relate and understand they are not crazy if they find themself in a similar situation.
Q) Do you plan on releasing a corresponding video for the song?
A) I will never say never; however, probably not for this particular song. I am already working on new music, and I see a video in the future for an upcoming song.
Q) Your music has been such an inspiration to many. How does it feel to be a role model through your music?
A) That is not something I take lightly. I want to be as authentic as I possibly can. My hope is I can be an example of being real. There is so much smoke and mirrors that happens in this industry. I grew up being told and believing that I couldn’t do music because I didn’t fit the mold. I never want others to feel that way. I want to be an example of what it looks like to follow a dream despite your critics, insecurities and perceived flaws. Your flaws and weaknesses are your secret weapon and what God can use to really show out…they also are what make you relatable and human.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Songbird Part Two was just released on July 24th. It completes the two-part Songbird project. I am now working on a Christmas EP that is slated to be released in November. And I am beginning work on another album that is a throwback to 90’s country.
Q) You’re also known for Songbird Parts One and Two, which shows your growth as a musician. Do you plan on making this an ongoing project to showcase your musical growth?
A) Part Two is the completion of the Songbird project. I really see “Songbird” as a chapter of my life that is over. It was about my years of struggle with trying to fit into a situation where I struggled to stay afloat. I should have left way before I chose too, but I am stubborn and thought the constant heartache was all part of the process. I wrote the “Songbird” project as a way of making sense of my life as I left a season that tore me down and I had to learn love myself again and rebuild.
Q) You’ve recently won several awards for your music. How does it feel to have your music be awarded and recognized?
A) It always feels good to be recognized. For me, I always see it as maybe I am on the right path, but for me it is not the most important thing. I am humbled for the recognition and feel incredibly blessed, but I am honestly prouder of continually moving forward.
Q) Who are some musicians that you would like to work with that you haven’t already?
A) Woah! The list is long and eclectic. Number one will always be Reba McEntire. Whether it is opening for her…singing a duet…walking her dog…I don’t really care. [smiles]
Q) Your music is country and pop inspired. Have you considered expanding into other genres (for remixes, etc.)?
A) Yes and no. I am always open to try something new and I never want to limit myself. I also never like to say this song is going to be “specific genre” when I go into the studio. I want the recording process to feel organic and thus, I try all kinds of things. With that said, I also want to be good at what I do. So, if in order to do that I need to be more sonically focused on a certain style because it better suits my voice, performance and/or lyrics. I am going to stay more focused on the country/pop genre.
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of the beautiful music that you make?
A) To my Avocados,
From the bottom of my heart, thank you! I have wanted to sing and create music since I was four years old. Without your support, none of this would be possible. I appreciate you coming out to shows, streaming my music, voting for me and honestly just taking time out of your day to leave me messages of encouragement.
I hope you know how much I love you!
