Jennifer Kydd – Beach Babe
Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?
A) I am currently auditioning at the moment for little features and TV movies.
Q) Tell us the premise of the show “Falcon Beach” and your character Paige.
A) “Falcon Beach” is primarily a show about summer. It’s young adults, kind of almost a second generation of people, that are spending their summer in this town that sort of caters to the summer lifestyle. There are townies and tourists that come every summer. It’s about a group of young adults and the summertime that they share together. It’s about the relationships that happen and it deals with their family, the parents who summer there and their relationships as well. My character, Paige Bradshaw, is the daughter of a wealthy businessman from the big city. My mother used to summer at Falcon Beach and wants to go back to her roots. She drags me back to her cottage and I don’t want to go because I want to follow in my father’s footsteps and be successful in the business world like him. I don’t really see how Falcon Beach can help me progress or get me to where I want to go. I am not too pleased to be there, but I kind of end up having to stay because my father is going through some financial problems and business problems. My mother has pretty much told me that I’m going to be at Falcon Beach for the summer, whether I like it or not. She is not happy at first, but then kind of makes the best of it. She meets a guy and falls for him and she kind of shows off her softer side to him. It’s basically a show about the 3-4 months when you are in a different place, different setting and you’re trying to pack as much action into that time period because you know that they aren’t going to last forever.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) I felt a strong connection with the character. She was different than myself. I am not from the big city and I enjoy camping and the simple lifestyle. I liked that she was different in that respect. I liked that it was kind of celebrating summer. Being from Canada, we don’t often do that on our TV shows. I think it’s fun and I enjoy doing it.
Q) What is a typical day of filming like for you?
A) It was pretty long because we were filming in Winnipeg, Manitoba! They have pretty short summers and they aren’t the longest. So, we had to film thirteen hour long episodes. We’d get up sometimes at 5am, get picked up and take an hour long drive to Winnipeg Beach, where we filmed. Some days you are in every scene and there are about 12 pages, which is a very long day. Other days, you might have a break in between or you sit in your trailer and rehearse lines. It varies from day to day. It’s an hour home, then you have to do your fake tanning and finally get to sleep. They are long days, but luckily I love doing it! My days off I hate because I enjoy being on set so much. I didn’t really know what to do with myself on my days off.
Q) What is your most memorable moment from filming?
A) Because we were all on location, a lot of the crew and the entire cast became our own family, so to speak. It was kind of like summer camp! When we left, we realized it was goodbye and wouldn’t see each other for 9 months. Seeing grown men cry, when the crew said goodbye, it was pretty touching. We all got along so well and we enjoyed each other’s company so much. We all cared so much about the characters and what happened with the series, so saying goodbye was probably my most memorable moment.
Q) Why should viewers take the time to watch the show?
A) I think that everybody could find something they can relate to in it. Even an audience that you wouldn’t think would normally watch a show like that, say my parents. It goes beyond just the young adult genre and it goes straight to the next generation and that deals with families, mother-daughter relationships, father-son relationships and things that we can all related to (summertime) in our youth. It’s a fun show and it takes place outdoors. I realized, after we shot the show that watching other television shows they are rarely outside. They may sit out on a picnic table or a porch, but we really are outside all of the time. The town, Falcon Beach, is kind of another character in our show and it’s good. Once people start watching, and get into episode four or five, it really starts to take off and I think they’ll really fall in love with the characters and care what happens to them.
Q) What made you want to be an actress?
A) I don’t know! It’s hard for me to guess why! Sometimes I’d watch certain TV shows and I’d try to write up lines from the show. If there was a scene that moved me, I’d rehearse it. That’s how I got interested and then I got involved in plays at school. I always was intrigued by it, not just in front of the camera, but also behind the scenes and the development of it. I guess I’ve always sort of interested in it. When I went to university, I decided to do something that I enjoy and luckily for me, it worked out!
Q) What has been your favorite project to work on?
A) It would have to be “Falcon Beach” just because the cast and crew were so tight. We had a blast all summer and had a great time!
Q) What do you do in your spare time?
A) I hang out with my friends, I go to dinner, I go to movies, watch TV and I like to travel. I like to socialize mainly!
Q) Now that it is 2006, what are most looking forward to this year?
A) I am looking forward to filming Season 2. I am also looking forward to taking a couple of trips, as well. I hope to go to France and maybe take some other trips.
