Interviews
Jenny March – November Nights
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say my sound is pretty edgy pop. I’m influenced by a lot of different styles, but I love electric guitars, 808s and funky synths.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Britney Spears, Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Post Malone.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “November Nights.”
A) “November Nights” is really about loving someone so much that you will do absolutely anything for them. You give your soul to them, even when you aren’t getting everything back in return. It’s a little unhealthy, but it’s exciting and thrilling at the same time.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think everyone can relate to loving someone so deeply and going off the deep end a bit. You need to pick the right person to love someone like that. I think the uptempo, sort of rock-n-roll pop beat, is really fun and easy to connect with too, especially for summer time.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video was directed by Juliana Carpino and I had the best time coming up with the video concept with her. We actually shot the video the day before we had to quarantine. We used colors, fashion and location along with my performance to show the different emotions I felt during the relationship, which I talk about in the song. My favorite scene in the video is the car scene. It’s almost as if I am talking to myself in the other seat positions and portraying those different feelings.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I don’t need music all of the time, but I definitely prefer to have music. I like to create melodies first off of some piano chords and then write from there. Sometimes I’ll just hear something in my head and voice memo it without music, but if I’m in the studio I like to create a simple beat or just write off of piano.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I went to Berklee College of Music online, so I learned a little bit about production there along with music marketing and business, which has helped me a lot in sessions over the years. I love to be involved in the production as well as the lyrics because I want to express myself through my music to make it as genuine as possible. I usually help with the arrangement, chord progressions and choosing the right sounds.
Q) We’ve been eagerly anticipating your album. Where does it stand with release?
A) Thank you! I’m very excited to drop my first EP since I’ve been working on it for a while now. We are looking at a fall release.
Q) What are some themes you will be exploring on the album?
A) This EP doesn’t have an exact theme to it. It’s a collection of songs that portray who I am and just that I enjoy.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) The Satellite is my favorite venue I’ve performed at and it actually just shut down due to having to be closed because of COVID-19. It’s really sad because that’s also the first venue I ever performed at in Los Angeles back in 2018!
Q) Since live shows are currently on hold, why is it so important for you to go live on Instagram for your “Wednesday Sessions?”
A) I wanted to create something during quarantine that allowed me to still entertain fans, but also help out other artists at the same time who may be missing out on performing. So, I came up with “Wednesday Sessions” as this live show on my Instagram every Wednesday at 4pm PST. I do a Q&A with the artist and then have them perform two to four songs of their choice. It’s a great way to get each other more exposure to new fans and just keep that performing spark alive.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) BANKS! She’s so cool. I’d love to collaborate with her one day.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Well, BANKS’s album III has been on repeat, especially for my weekly quarantine nighttime drives. She always makes me feel something. It’s super moody. I just started getting into O7O Shake too and her music is sick. I love her production style.
Q) Do you have any plans to return to acting some day in the future?
A) Right now, it’s not the most important thing. Also, COVID-19 is making it harder for everything, but I do want to return to acting some time in the near future. I’ve been thinking about going back to class recently to just keep that muscle memory there, but everything is on Zoom right now.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think social media is great for the ability to directly communicate and connect with your fans. You can share as little or as much of your life as you want. I don’t post every day on there, but I like to post music related things and just random life stuff. It’s an easy way for your fans to get to know more about you.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you guys! I can’t even begin to describe the feeling you get from seeing someone react positively to your music. I started writing music originally for myself, but now I get to write for y’all too and that’s awesome. I can’t wait for you all to hear my EP coming this fall.
