Interviews
Jessica Zeltzer – Throwback
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) As of right now I would describe my sound as bubblegum pop…but that may change. [winks]
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I look up to a few different artists, for different reasons. The artist that I look up to stylistically is definitely Dua Lipa. I love the vibe that her songs give off, with the heavy drums and fast paced beat. I love the positive, powerful, upbeat and confident vibe that can be felt through her music. I also love the way she portrays herself, as a confident and powerful female, which is something I also try to portray, as an artist.
Another artist I look up to is Billie Eilish because she is so unique and really stands out from the crowd. And, of course, I look up to the queen Arianna Grande 😛 I honestly love everything about her 😅 her music, her fashion, her strong feminism and confidence.
The last two artists that I look up to are Taylor Swift and NF; Taylor Swift because she is honestly a legend…. and NF because of his deep, dark, meaningful lyrics. I love the power behind them, and they are so beautifully written.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Throwback.”
A) “Throwback” is about a really hard breakup that I went through. It was the most difficult thing that I experienced, mostly because it was one-sided. His heart was mended, but mine wasn’t. All I wanted was for us to be together again, just like we used to be. I wanted a Throwback [smiles]…But, he didn’t.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The idea of wanting a throwback can relate to many things. For example, a heartbreak or missing a special person or just reminiscing about memories. Many people have gone through difficult breakups, feeling stuck and lonely, depressed and sometimes hopeless and just missing that person who is not theirs anymore. There are so many ways to interpret the song, to fit one’s situation. [smiles]
Q) What is your song writing process?
A) I honestly write lyrics wherever I am, 24/7. I am constantly typing lyrics into my phone, but I prefer to write when I am in my deepest thoughts. I have a few songs that I listen to when I write, which are slow, deep songs, making it easy for my mind to process my own thoughts.
When I write, I like to be in my own space. Often times, I like to go to the beach or sometimes I like to sit in my yard on a nice day. Other times, I just sit in my room with some chocolate and pour my thoughts onto a piece of paper…It really depends where I am and what I’m doing.
Q) Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I do not need music before creating the lyrics, but that is sometimes the easiest way to write my thoughts. It really depends on a couple of factors: 1) the type of song 2) if I am working with another co-writer and 3) if I already have prior lyrics that I want to use. A song can be created in different ways. ☺️
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I have a lot of say in the production of my music. I am very picky when it comes to releasing and creating my songs. I have recorded many songs, and they all feel so right at the moment, but listening to the tracks afterwards, can sometimes change the way I feel, from the way I felt initially. And if that happens, I start all over again.
Q) You also have the upcoming track “Sad Song.” What can you tease about the message behind it?
A) “Is it really too late to apologize?” … [winks]
Q) What can fans expect from a live Jessica Zeltzer performance?
A) Positive energy, movement and charisma!
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) Definitely in the future. [smiles]
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Oh, so many people!! I have always wanted to collab with Shawn Mendes. I love the soft twist to his music and our sounds and voices would go nicely together. 😌I would also love to collab with some rappers, just not sure which ones yet. [wink]
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to Mabel’s album High Expectations. I literally have it on repeat, the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed. As mentioned previously in the interview, I have always loved Dua Lipa’s style of music and I feel like both Mabel and Dua have similar music styles. I love the female power, confident, uplifting vibe Mabel’s songs give and her music definitely motivates me to be productive throughout the day.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is so important now a days and there are so many different ways to connect with your fans. I personally try to stay in touch with my fans through Instagram DM, as much as possible. It is a great way to interact with them, share information and build connections that are very meaningful. I love to engage with my fans directly because it keeps them excited about what’s coming next.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I want to thank each and every one of you. You mean so much to me and I would not be where I’m at if it wasn’t for your support and encouragement. 😌Your continued support motivates me every day to keep climbing. I love you with all my ♥️.
