Jill Wagner – Pearl in Paradise
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) What are some of the themes and undertones of the film Pearl In Paradise?
A) Finding love is the true treasure.
Q) When you began reading the script, what are some of your character’s traits or aspects that really stood out and resonated with you?
A) Alex is super career driven and I have been that way all my life.
Q) The hallmark of Hallmark movies is the great balance of heart and humor as well as love and lessons. How does this film stay consistent with that?
A) Kris Polaha really brought the funny to this movie. I loved working with him. I feel that our chemistry and the chemistry with the other castmates was really good on this film. I love when that happens!
Q) What do you think it is about the film that will draw viewers in?
A) Fiji was such a beautiful place to film and I think people will enjoy seeing the lovely setting. I also hope that people believe in the performances of the actors. [smiles]
Q) How does the film build up to feelings flipping from professional to personal as it progresses?
A) There are many things that cause Alex and Colin to begin to fall in love. The fact that they are polar opposites makes that journey very interesting and somewhat humorous.
Q) We have seen you take on these dramatic diverse roles that really test and showcase your range. They have this incredible balance of vulnerability, complexity, and are insanely compelling. How does this extend with Pearl in Paradise and what draws you into or connects you with these characters?
A) I love the fact that Pearl in Paradise isn’t your typical Hallmark film. First of all, we are in a super exotic location and it even has stunts in it!!! It feels a bit like Romancing the Stone.
Q) With an extensive career we have seen your characters push boundaries and turn their pain into power. What is it about these fierce but flawed females that we relate to and need to see more of?
A) Now more than ever I feel these characters need to take center stage. I have always been drawn to strong female characters and I love that Hallmark celebrates them!
Q) With filming in Fiji, what was the most surreal moment that stood out for you on or off set?
A) I went into a poverty stricken village on one of my days off and gave them simple things like flip flops, toothbrushes and footballs. To our standards (in the US) these people were very poor but it was nice to see that they all were so happy. Family and their love for GOD keeps them fulfilled and that melted my heart. We all could learn something from these people, I think.
Q) Since the film focuses on travel, what is one place you have yet to visit that you have on your bucket list?
A) Poland. My husband’s family is from there.
Q) What have you taken away from your experiences being a part of this film?
A) I have learned that the people of Fiji are some of the most kind and lovely people I have ever met. I love exploring new cultures and falling in love with them.
