Jordyn Sugar – Ghost

By: Sammi Turano

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I’d describe my sound as very 2010’s pop, with R&B undertones that I love to showcase through my riffs and runs and a pinch of rock influence that comes from my drumming background. People often tell me I sound like a young Justin Bieber, which is honestly one of the best compliments I could ever receive.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I have many musical influences but my number one has always been Justin Bieber. Back in 2020, I was extremely fortunate when Justin reposted my TikTok video of me singing his song “Favorite Girl” to his Instagram story. I’ve looked up to him for years and his story has always inspired me; he is truly the reason I chose this career path. Some of my other major influences include Michael Jackson, Shawn Mendes, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, JoJo, Elton John, Phil Collins and Sabrina Carpenter. It’s a pretty diverse list because I grew up listening to a mix of classic rock, 80s pop and Top 40 radio. Before I was a singer, I was a drummer and started playing when I was just three years old. Rhythm has always come naturally to me, and my biggest drumming influence is Neil Peart from the band Rush. If you listen to my music, you’ll hear traces of all these influences from the sounds of the 80s to the biggest artists today.

Q) “Ghost” is your latest single. What is the inspiration behind the song and lyrics as a whole?

“Ghost” is the first song I’ve created that asks a direct question to the audience: “Why’d you have to ghost on me?” It’s the question you ask yourself when someone suddenly cuts you off, out of nowhere, without any closure. I’ve been through it and I know so many others have too, yet I haven’t heard a song that poses the question and stays vulnerable about it.

I feel like a lot of people are ashamed to admit they’ve been ghosted, but I hope that when they hear this song, they realize they’re not alone, it happens more often than you think. I’m an over-thinker and this track captures all the emotions and spiraling thoughts that drive you crazy when someone stops replying or leaves you on read.

Q) Was it based on a specific experience or just the general situation of being ghosted?

A) I try and only write songs with themes or experiences that I have been through so the lyrics are most authentic to me. This is based on a specific experience that I have been through but I know that so many others go through daily. This isn’t just another heartbreak or sad song; it’s more like a conversation with the listener. In those moments when you feel unseen, you can turn this song on and feel understood. Your feelings are valid and it’s okay to be confused without having all the answers.

Q) “Ghost” has some amazing lyrics that hit home for many people who have been ghosted.  What kind of response have you been receiving to it from fans who relate?

A) The response has been incredibly positive. Everyone is really vibing with the song and so many people have told me how much they relate to the topic. A lot of listeners have shared that they’ve been ghosted and felt alone, so they appreciate having a song that captures what they’re going through.

Q) You collaborated with Bayla and Lucas Liberatore on “Ghost.” How did the three of you come to connect?

A) I co-wrote “Ghost” with songwriter Bayla and it was produced by Luca. It was such a smooth, creative and collaborative session that really brought the vision of the song to life. I had previously worked with Luca in 2023 on my single “Fool of Me,” so we already had a great working relationship. I met Bayla in 2025 through a contact of mine and since she had already been working with Luca for years, everything came together naturally.

Q) The music video for “Ghost” was powerful, yet simple. Where did the visual concept come from?

A) The feeling of being ghosted paints a vivid picture in my mind. It feels lonely, cold, gloomy, sad and uncertain, so I wanted the visuals to reflect exactly that. The video takes place at an empty skate park on a cold, rainy day. I wanted the visuals to capture the same emotions and atmosphere as the song.

Q) “Ghost” earned you comparisons to Olivia Rodrigo, Pink and Halsey. How does it feel to be compared to such iconic singers?

A) I look up to these artists and am heavily inspired by them, so being even slightly compared to them means the world to me. I got into singing by mimicking different singers, which is how I trained and developed my voice into what it is today. I draw inspiration from all kinds of artists and blend those influences to create my own unique sound.

Q) With “Ghost” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or EP?

A) Yes, “Ghost” is the first single from an EP that I’m working on right now. It really sets the tone for what’s to come. I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we have been working on.

Q) You recently opened for Rachel Grae. What did you take away or learn from that experience?

A) I’ve been very grateful to open for such amazing artists, including CeeLo Green, Kardinal Offishall and Gloria Gaynor. Opening for Rachel was especially cool because we’re close in age, have similar styles, and just vibed really well. I always love meeting and connecting with other artists because, at the end of the day, we’re all in this together, working toward the same goal. It’s so important to root for one another.

Q) You’re planning on touring soon. What will fans be able to experience at a live Jordyn Sugar performance?

A) I’ve dreamed of touring since I started singing. There’s nothing I love more than performing, the rush is indescribable. When I step on stage, I feel complete. It’s such an incredible feeling to connect with fans and sing my favorite songs. We’re currently in discussions about a tour, and it’s definitely something coming up in the near future.

Q) Who are some people you would like to collaborate with in the future?

A) I recently collaborated with Tyler Shaw, who has been such an inspiration and incredibly amazing to work with. There’s no one I would love to collaborate with more than Justin Bieber. There are also many producers I’d love to work with, including John Summit, Calvin Harris and Benny Blanco. I feel like my voice would fit their styles perfectly. Honestly, I would be beyond grateful to collaborate with anyone in the industry.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of you and your music?

A) I’ve been lucky to have such an amazing group of fans and supporters. I’ve built a lot of my fanbase from going live on TikTok, and they’ve been incredibly supportive. I want to say thank you for always streaming my music, watching my content, buying my merch and not taking me too seriously. I love you all and thank you for being a part of this journey with me from the start…It’s really just the beginning. Love you all SWEETIES.
