Interviews
Jorlov – Soul Giver
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) It’s always changing. I really want to always evolve my sound. Every single I dropped this summer will sound completely different. It’s all about the beats. I loved the bassline on this song that’s what really took me.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) As of recently Tyler the Creator has been inspiring me so much. I joined the wave late, but his production and sampling are incredible.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Soul Giver.”
A) I was in the studio in LA recording the “Soul Giver” lyrics on this old beat and there were probably six to eight people in the studio. Some girl in the room who I didn’t really know started commenting on the beat saying she didn’t like it. I didn’t completely like it either, so I went, “Okay, I’m scrapping it.” She said something like, “Nah, didn’t mean it like that.” But I really did. I found a new beat and added the line “she don’t like the old rhythm it’s a cold rhythm” to the song a week later. That always makes me laugh.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) It’s the summer everyone is out tryna live, this is a really fun song to just bump with a drink in your hand.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It’s always different but for me it usually starts with the beat. I used to just be a producer, so the beat is always really important to me. That being said – sometimes something happens, and you just need to write about it. That’s what happened with “LWFL (Long Way from London).” The lyrics came first with that one.
Q) How did you come to work with the 14-year-old DaRealDido for the production of the song?
A) I originally found his beats on YouTube and loved them. Then, when I found out he was fourteen years old, I was so impressed and also so intrigued in him. His beats go hard. Kid just turned fifteen. Happy Birthday brotha!
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) When I think the fans need an album they’re going to get a huge project. That’s far away though.
Q) With concerts having been on hold, what have you missed most about being on stage?
A) The way you connect with the crowd. Seeing each face looking at you and hearing each individual person is crazy.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Showjoe has been impressing me a lot recently. I love his cadence and energy. I think we’d sound crazy together and over a Jorlov beat.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I really, really appreciate you all. I’m not going to fake flex. I’m aware I’m still at the beginning, but the fact I have people who listen to me every day is amazing. Opening my Spotify artists app and seeing twenty-three people listening at once is crazy. Thinking of where they are hearing it, what they’re going through, if it’s helping them, it keeps me going. I love you all. I will keep working for you! Come see me live when shows open up.
