Interviews
Justin Kelly – Hudson & Rex
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects you are working on?
A) I had a supporting role in a film called Run This Town, which is about the Rob Ford scandal (former mayor of Toronto). That will be released by eOne later this year I believe. I’m also recurring on “Wynonna Earp,” which has just been renewed for a fourth season.
Q) What is new this season of “Hudson & Rex?”
A) What’s great about this show is that you can always expect we will be up to the same crime solving shenanigans! We do; however, tackle a whole new array of exciting cases this season. For example, last week’s episode took us into the world of figure skating. I’m really enjoying what the writers are coming up with.
Q) What keeps challenging you about your portrayal?
A) There is quite a bit of technical talk coming from Jesse. He also really likes to talk. And with that comes some difficult dialogue. Some days are more challenging than others, but I find that exciting. It’s good to feel challenged in what we do.
Q) Have you had much of a say in how your character has developed in Season 2?
A) The good thing is that the writers have really found a voice for Jesse early on in the series. He’s funny and can be the butt of the joke at times – which I love. The humor in the show is something that I really enjoy doing and I think the writers see that. So, going into Season 2, I think we’ve just capitalized on that a little more.
Q) What are some themes or arcs we’ll be seeing on the show?
A) We have a few coming up where we tackle things like gender identity, social media fame and online dating. We also have a really fun episode that we just finished shooting where Charlie (John Reardon) and Rex (Diesel vom Burgimwald) leave St. John’s to head to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, French Islands off the coast of Newfoundland. It’s the first episode we’ve done that takes place abroad.
Q) Going into Season 2, was there someone(s) you were looking forward to working with more?
A) Because Jesse is mostly at his desk in the bullpen, I don’t often get to work with a lot of our guest stars. But there are a couple this season that were a blast. In one episode, Jesse strikes up a conversation with someone at a book signing, who is played by Humberly Gonzalez who was a blast to work with. I also got to work with French actress Carole Bianic and she was lovely.
Q) What are some of your favorite moments filming this season or some episodes fans can look forward to?
A) Some of my favorite moments have really been working with John, Mayko [Nguyen] and Kevin [Hanchard] in the police department. It’s not often that we have days where it’s the four of us shooting together, but when we do, we have so much fun. There is one episode in particular I am really looking forward to shooting. I don’t want to give much away, but the script is great and I think fans will really love it.
Q) You are on social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive from the episode?
A) I really do. It’s especially great when you read peoples’ reactions as the episode is airing. Sort of like a play-by-play commentary.
Q) What do you think it is about this series that has made it such a fan favorite?
A) I think “Hudson & Rex” is just a good old-fashioned cop show that anybody can watch. There is a lot of TV out there, and this is the perfect example of a dinner time family show. And Rex is just so damn charming!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of the work you do?
A) Just thank you! Your support means the world. Hope you keep tuning into “Hudson & Rex” and much love to you all!
