Kaatii – Catharsis on my Bedroom Floor
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would say my sound, especially recently, has been very indie-folk oriented.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Some of my most potent musical influences recently have been Nick Drake, Christian Lee Hudson, Adrienne Lenker, Haley Heynderickx, Elliott Smith and Phoebe Bridgers.
Q) Please tell us the themes you explore on your debut album Catharsis on my Bedroom Floor.
A) Some of the large thematic ideas of this EP are mental health and healing. If you listen to the project top to bottom, it is a progression of struggling to slowly getting better and coming to terms with it all.
Q) You co-wrote many of the songs with Kara Connolly. How did the two of you connect to become songwriters?
A) Brianna Ruelas, my industry coach, introduced us in early 2020. The plan was to write only one song together, but it went so well that I decided to continue working with her after that.
Q) Which of the songs challenged you the most whether it was creatively or lyrically?
A) The most difficult song to create was “Dandelion Puff” because it forced me to come to terms with a lot of very ugly feelings. While creating it, I processed and accepted some of the darker aspects of myself.
Q) What songs on the album hold a special place in your heart
A) All of the songs hold a really special place in my heart – they’re all extremely deep and emotionally driven. If I had to pick one that I hold the closest, it would be “Dandelion Puff. “
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My writing process starts with extensive journaling over a long period of time. Besides separate brainstorming, the first thing I do is find chords. Whenever I’m in the mood to create, I sit down and put together different things I’ve come up with, and the melody usually comes naturally.
Q) Andrew Heringer handled the production on this album, but how much of a say do you tend to have in the production of your music?
A) I have a huge say in the production. Andrew brings a ton to the table, and he is a very talented producer, but he’s also very respectful of me and my ideas. I regularly tell him things I want added / changed and he nails it every time.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your album Catharsis on my Bedroom Floor as a whole?
A) I hope that if listeners listen to the project from top to bottom, that they will be able to take away a feeling of hope. I’ve learned through working on this project that mental health really does get better over time.
Q) Will you be headed out on tour to promote the album and perform your new songs soon?
A) I’m always up for the opportunity to perform. A majority of my gigs are local to me (Dallas, Texas), but I’d love to perform in other areas if the opportunity arises!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Lately I’ve been obsessed with niche indie artists, and I think the people I’d love to collaborate with most are Samia, Charlie Hickey and Christian Lee Hudson.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I listen to so much music I can’t pick one! Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Samia, Lomelda and Charlie Hickey. I love their music because of the soothing folk centric tunes with added depth and emotional substance.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s exciting to have fans from around the country and even around the world. Social media is a great way to connect with all of them, whether it be via DM, comment or livestream.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much for supporting me! It truly means the world. As a small independent artist, fan support makes a huge difference. If you have any questions or things you would like to tell me, contact me on Instagram! I read all of my DMs and love getting to know my supporters.
