Interviews
Katja Glieson – Starseed
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Hmm. I would describe it as Pop Diva, with a dash of soul.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I am a classic girl. I love movie musicals and I love me some Etta James, Fats Domino, Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Starseed.”
A) A “Starseed” is a person born into light work. A soul that has incarnated on this planet to raise the vibration of consciousness. Starseeds see and feel the truth of everything. The song “Starseed” is about one of these souls who no longer wishes to participate in any of Earth’s societal eco-systems. In layman’s terms, it is a suicide note. But it is so much more than that.
Q) The video for the song is titled “Diamonds.” How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) When thinking about the video that I wanted for the song. I considered playing myself and telling a story true to what I was feeling when I wrote this song. But if I am being completely honest with you, I know no one gives a flying fuck about how I feel about the condition of the world. I didn’t want it to feel like “aw poor white girl is sad.” So, I began thinking about stories that incorporated a female doing her very best to remain in her power, and yet have it consistently taken away from her. I decided to deep dive into the death ruled to be a probable suicide of one of the biggest Earth stars we have ever had: Marilyn Monroe.
Q) It has its upcoming premiere at the LA Shorts premiere. What does that mean to you?
A) When I say this project has been all me – I mean it. From writing and co-producing the song, to the research, writing and careful planning of the script, to casting, set dressing, wardrobe, craft services, jumping behind the camera, hair and makeup, to acting, to editing.
Given the personal sensitive subject matter, my emotions were all very much present during the entire process. The fear of vulnerability is always scratching at my neck.
It was SO MUCH WORK. But it didn’t feel like work. And after ALL of that. I still very much care about being understood and received. Having this premiere at LA Shorts film festival right before George R. R. Martin’s project, is just a dream come true. I don’t have huge budgets or unlimited resources. Just drive and work ethic. I am so proud of this project. And am humbled to be understood and received.
Q) What do you think it is about “Starseed” that fans will connect to?
A) I think that the world in general has become extremely hostile and volatile over the past few years, and I think everyone is just trying to survive it. I think a lot of people can relate to the idea that life in this world doesn’t feel how it’s supposed to feel.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Emotion is first. Noticing and allowing it to move through you. When it comes to writing and molding that emotion into a song…All and every way. Sometimes lyrics are first, sometimes melody is first, sometimes chords or entire music instrumentals happen first. For this song it was the words that came first
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) A lot of hand. Instrumentation is very important to me. If you can think of music like ordering a lovely restaurant meal. I am the plant-based restaurant that tries to make the food healthy and yummy. I make sure all my ingredients are organic and healing. I use a lot of solfeggio tones and healing musical instruments in my songs. I co-produce my music and have the best, most open minded co producer.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming soon?
A) I dunno, do you want one?
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) LA Pride was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had as a performer. Best energy. I also loved performing at the Forum that was huuuuge!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would love to collaborate with the king of Pop melody, Max Martin. He only works with signed artists with bank. I’d also love to create a sexy guitar crying smash with Carlos Santana.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Currently listening to The B-52’s. After all this depressing music, I am delving into some forever fun classics. Anyone on here right now, listen to “Love Shack” it will automatically boost your mood
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) To be honest, I am extremely disappointed and disenchanted by social media. When I was first involving myself in social media, we were building beautiful organic virality. Then, the rich narcissists came in with their political daddies and momagers and paid for likes, views, drama, etc. Now, it’s become a cesspool of negativity, materialism and toxicity. It’s difficult to open and hold space for artistic integrity.
That being said, I love finding my vibe tribe. I always felt different to everyone else – like something is wrong with me for how I naturally see the world. But through social media, I can find other quirky people and we can be quirky together.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A: YOU ARE EVERYTHING
The world
The future
My heart
You have it all.
For u, I am hopeless.
