Kelsie Watts – SIX The Musical
By: Ashlee Dell’Arciprete
Q) Congratulations on all of your recent successes, including being cast as Queen Jane Seymour in SIX The Musical on Broadway. SIX seems like an amazing show that I hope to see soon. How does it feel to make your Broadway debut as Queen Jane?
A) Making my Broadway debut has made me feel numb, I’m still in a state of shock to be honest! It’s an absolute honor to join the queendom!
Q) What was the casting process like for SIX after you had the casting director leave you her card?
A) The casting process is not an easy one. It’s been a much longer process than I think most people realize. SIX originally invited me to a call back audition in 2020. I made it to NYC for the final call back and then actually got cut! Determined to better myself, I asked the casting director what I could work on to further develop this part of my craft. He suggested I work on my acting and that made sense because I’d never acted before. He put me in touch with an acting coach, Benjamin Shaw, and I was really intentional with my practice. Fast forward to 2023 and I was invited to partake in SIX The Musical’s bootcamp in NYC. There were probably around thirty of us and this was the first time I was called for only Seymour. It was a week-long intensive filled workshop with acting, singing and dancing. To be honest, I didn’t expect anything to come from it. I took the amazing education I’d just received and was simply grateful. I had no idea that a year later my manager would get a call asking if I’d be interested in playing Jane Seymour on Broadway! So, here I am!
Q) How long of a process was it before you got the call that you got the part?
A) The total audition process from first meeting the casting director to final audition process was about four years.
Q) Had you seen SIX The Musical before auditioning for it?
A) I had not seen SIX the Musical before auditioning but I had definitely listened to the West End recording.
Q) Do you have any daily show rituals for SIX developed yet?
A) Oh yes, I have a few daily show rituals if that’s what you want to call them. I’m very intentional about warming up both physically and vocally. I arrive at the theater a solid two hours early so that I have ample time to do makeup, wig prep and warm up. With this new schedule of eight shows a week I’m also trying to figure out my food schedule! Really dialing in the diet to work with my show performance. It’s a lot of cardio and I need to make sure what I put in my body is giving me lots of energy. Especially on two show days.
Q) Have you had the chance to meet any of your favorite Broadway performers yet? Who is on your bucket list to meet?
A) I haven’t had a chance to meet any of my favorite Broadway performers in person yet but I’ve conversed online via Instagram. My Broadway bucket list is definitely Hugh Jackman, Shoshana Bean, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel just to name a few! If I listed them all out it would take a while!
Q) Did your upbringing in your hometown of Lubbock influence the music that you make as an artist?
A) I wouldn’t say growing up in my hometown of Lubbock, TX influenced my music, but I would say the music I grew up listening to at home DEFINITELY did. We listened to Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, but we also had bands like KISS, Boston and Def Leppard playing as well. There was always music playing in my parents’ home. I think that’s why I’m so drawn to a mix of pop and rock music.
Q) You realized you could sing at just two years old. Do you remember writing your first original music?
A) The first original song I ever wrote alone, crazy enough, was in 2013 and I remember it well. I was in a practice room at Belmont University. My brother, Jordan, had recently passed away and I wrote a song called “I Miss You.” I’ve never released it, but I’m pretty sure I have a video of it.
Q) You released your latest singles “After Midnight” and “Forgetful” in 2024. Do you plan on releasing an album next?
A) Yes, I definitely plan to release an album soon. I am currently working with different producers and finishing songs we like for the project. I have some finished that I will release as singles during the next few months leading up to an album release.
Q) Where is your favorite place to write music typically?
A) My favorite place to write is the studio. I love being the vibe and being there with a producer. I feel the most creative in that space.
Q) I’m so sorry about the sudden loss of your brother. How important was it for you to write “I Can’t Say Goodbye” in his honor?
A) Thank you so much, writing “I Can’t Say Goodbye” for my brother Jordan was so important. That song was a way for me to process my grief. It will always be the most special song I’ve released. I still get comments about it to this day. In fact, I met a man at the stage door last night after the show and he thanked me for that song. He said that he had also lost his brother and that song helped him through it. I’m so grateful that it’s being used to help others. I wanted it to not only help me but help anyone who has suffered a loss.
Q) You’ve said before that one of the ways you express creativity is through tattoos. What is your favorite tattoo, and what is the story behind it?
A) My favorite tattoo, hmmm. Oh gosh, I have so many. [laughs] One of my favorites is my sunflowers. They’re the flowers we keep on my brother’s grave, but I also love them because they’re known as a faithful flower. They open up and follow the sun. They also are known to withstand harsh weather. They’re beautiful, but strong. And I think that’s a combination I’ve always admired.
Q) Have you and Kelly Clarkson kept in touch after your season of “The Voice” in 2020?
A) I wish Kelly Clarkson and I kept in touch after I was on Team Kelly, but unfortunately, I haven’t had contact with her since my time on the show. It’s on my goal list to do “The Kelly Clarkson Show” though.
Q) What artist would you love to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are SO MANY artists I would love to collaborate with. Top of the list? Lady Gaga, Jelly Roll and Ariana Grande.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you as an artist and now Broadway star?
A) To all my fans who have been with me from the start of this crazy ride and to those who are just joining the fun I say THANK YOU!! I wouldn’t have a career if no one listened to my voice or my music. I’m forever grateful for every single person who’s liked, shared and commented on posts, shown up to my shows and sent me words of encouragement. It means the world to me!
